Best theme music for a TV show?
I was asked this recently.
Tricky.
Opted for Hill Street Blues in the end.

Good choice. I was thinking about that show just the other day. I have a lot of candidates. Succession? Twin Peaks? Magic Roundabout?

MASH or WKRP in Cincinnati would be on my list

44Mm metres rowed. Re-setting the bar much lower now. Getting too old and brittle for this malarky

Fleetwood Mac's the Chain, as used for BBC F1 coverage!!!
I think Dr Who has to get an honourable mention, for uniqueness and longevity (even if some of the arrangements have been a bit rubbish)
I think one of the ice-cream vans round here has the 70's Test Match Cricket Theme and it really makes it feel like summer when you hear it. (Or it might be a neighbour with a spectacularly loud ring-tone, but in this case, I don't mind!)
Loving the 'Slow Horses' theme too
You can tell a good theme tune these days as you actually choose to listen to it, rather than skipping it!

My favorite is absolutely Baba O'Riley from the Who, in CSI NY. Though some suggestions here are great as well.

I'm going to give an honourable mention to the music from House.
Teardrop explodes I think?

Haven't seen House that much that I remember the music, but I definitely like Teardrop Explodes

Yep, decent Liverpool (UK) band but not I suggest one that you can do a very active row to?

Most of mine above, although The theme from Mash was the track for my O & A Levels so a mixed memory now.
Fireball XL5 was a bit before me, but I would put in a bid for Sting Ray (Although the "Marina" section is plainly wierd!)..
57 year old Lwt (in ability and in weight) trying to develop a technique that doesn't cause hysterics and continue to row regularly.

Re: Best theme music for a TV show?
The following were used as the theme music for TV programmes:
This Week - Sibelius - Intermezzo from The Karelia Suite
Quatermass and The Pit - Holst - Mars The Bringer of War from The Planets Suite
South Bank Show - Variations From a Theme by Paganini
Arena - Brian Eno - Another Green World
Panorama - Rachmaninov - First movement of his 1st Symphony
The Lone Ranger and William Tell - Rossini -The William Tell Overture
Jonathan Creek - Danse Macabre - Saint-Saens
When I'm on the way out, it would be perfect to have Another Green World playing ( on a loop ) in the background.

Re: Best theme music for a TV show?
A bit late with my reaction. No, not something that helps rowing a lot I think, but I must confess I hardly ever play music whilst rowing. Although recently I watched Underworld in the Boiler room while being busy on the C2.webberg wrote: Thu Oct 16, 2025 3:57 pm Yep, decent Liverpool (UK) band but not I suggest one that you can do a very active row to?
