Jan 2025 CTC - The RLR New Year 5k Sprint
Straight 5k. One I need to redo, but never a nice prospect!
56 year old Lwt (in ability and in weight) trying to develop a technique that doesn't cause hysterics and continue to row regularly.

This was as vile as it looks - I had a negative split in mind, but that all got thrown out the proverbial window after the first split.. The blip in the last split was a momentary HD but I'm very glad to have pushed on and logged a score.

Re: Jan 2025 CTC - The RLR New Year 5k Sprint
See SB thread - but managed by 3rd 5k without breaks/intervals post op and pulled 7s off my previous SB to 22:05.0. Neg splits, although it was my intention to start "steady". Mental battle gymnastics to get through the last 1500m though!

Excellent rows Ian & Dave
Colin, well done for finishing and I am sure you have learned from the experience and will do better next time.
Well determined to get in an early effort prior to the big row, so after a day off yesterday no excuse at not giving it a go. My last hard distance (see PP thread) left my intercostals (breathing muscles attached to ribs) in a sorry state from maintaining an unfamiliar R24 for nearly 42 mins. So worried at surviving a hard 5k. But with a Waterfall (also on PP) averaging 2:02.2 mostly at R25 without any undue consequences between, decided on trying to stay between 2:02 & 2:03 for 3k then see what I had left, trying to hold R25. really cold (DF inside rose from 126 Monday to 133!) so warmed up longer than usual, 6.1k, most below 2:09 and still not visibly sweating! Thanks Cap'n for the target, really helped in the chase for home, over to you to show that this was merely a modest marker for you. Temporarily into boat 1, but with Ian firmly in lightweight seat, I expect to change boats a couple of times at least!
Time Distnc Rate Pace Hrmax % HRmin %
04:03.7 1,000 26 02:01.9 162 88.0% 104 56.5% - started at R24, but after 2:04s increased, but surprised R26 when most seemed to be at R25
04:04.0 1,000 26 02:02.0 170 92.4% 161 87.5% - got into good 2:02(26) rhythm
04:04.0 1,000 26 02:02.0 174 94.6% 170 92.4% - feeling it, slowing from R27 a couple of times and clawed back average from 2:03.5
04:03.6 1,000 26 02:01.8 175 95.1% 173 94.0% - concentrating on long strokes, probably under cooked it as no 3.5k crisis!
03:57.0 1,000 29 01:58.5 177 96.2% 173 94.0% - 2:01s for 200M then started 35 strokes eyes closed, checked monitor and had slowed to 2:03!, then full 2k finish to try and beat Peter (did by 0.1S )
20:12.3 5000 26.7 2:01.2 177 96.2%
SB by 29.6S and 18 nonathlon points for my highest score so far this season and 3rd dark green on Meta
2 ladies and a man needed to get boats 2 & 3 on the water.

Re: Jan 2025 CTC - The RLR New Year 5k Sprint
Thanks Peter. I know that you can go significantly faster, so just returning the favour by motivating you to go quicker! Given what I have coming up I am unlikely to have a second go.
I expect Chrisnew, Spider & Aren to eclipse my performance at this distance that I have consistently underperformed at. Not sure why I have remained even weaker at 5k than other distances, doesn't make sense when performing better at 1k- and 10k+. Any thoughts on the extra element required for a 5/6k which is less important on other distances?

Re: Jan 2025 CTC - The RLR New Year 5k Sprint
Improved to a 19:53.6 today, by using the first 5k of my daily HM. Did make the remainder of the session feel relatively easy....
It's a bit of challenge to fit in rowing a decent 5k when doing daily distance. Doesn't help that my form isn't great either, especially at any kind of faster pace.

Re: Jan 2025 CTC - The RLR New Year 5k Sprint
Hi guys just had a look on facebook, not a regular thing for me so a bit surprised to find a message from Rod Chinn from the Diamonds over 60s team, asking if I’m the Free Spirits Facebook representative and if so could I have a word with our CTC captain (Peter) ? as apparently they are setting up a CTC team captains group and wanted to invite Free Spirits CTC captain to join.
Regards
Colin Bradley.

Colin, I am already a member of the ctc team captains group on Facebook and Rod Chinn should know about that as we already chatted in that group.

Re: Jan 2025 CTC - The RLR New Year 5k Sprint
Seems to have been a flood of good times - well done all!
I managed to improve mine to 19:34.0 - it's tough to fully commit when I'm doing it as the first 5k of a HM though...
I did get up to a HR of 170, and suffered enough to have plenty of time to regret during the following 16097m...

I asked you a long time before Peter joined and I managed to get word to him through someone else as you did not see my message for a long time.stumpy wrote: Sun Jan 12, 2025 10:12 pm Hi guys just had a look on facebook, not a regular thing for me so a bit surprised to find a message from Rod Chinn from the Diamonds over 60s team, asking if I’m the Free Spirits Facebook representative and if so could I have a word with our CTC captain (Peter) ? as apparently they are setting up a CTC team captains group and wanted to invite Free Spirits CTC captain to join.

The Group have been set up by the CTC admin guy who works for British Rowing who host the CTC on their server...so pay for it....it has neo been set up by me or my team.
I just helped the CTC admin guy to get word about it to all the CTc captains as he's still a bit new to e CTC but I've been around since the srone age when we were putting our scores on rocks so knew a few of the captians or how to get the info on joining the group to them

Nice 5k Peter. I recall when sub 20 was " a bit of a push" whereas now it's an impossible dream.

Plummy, we can only work on where we are. I remember being disappointed at not being sub 19:30, but despite being fitter than I have been for some time, I don't think I have a sub 20 in me. So when are you going sub 22?
Thanks Claire for floating boat 3' 3 more including 2 ladies for 2 more boats.

Hahaha. Someone has a signature that says something like 'I used to be a lot faster' (only better expressed). I think we all suffer that one... I do have an age adjustment mechanism somewhere which helps a bit.
