Great row Dave - it's really a tough row (I'm really not a fan of no active rest at this pace) which makes it all the more impressive that we've got so many results. Well done team!

2 more needed for a 6th boat! Well done all

I echo that, well done Dave, this challenge is a nasty one!

Re filling six boats, Ronald Roussaux just entered a score, so only one more needed for a sixth boat. Frank Röthlingshöfer (one of the new entries from rowing club) promised me to have his first go soon! So fingers crossed we‘ll have six boats floated :fswink:

Well done Fred and Dave - great work =D> =D>

I figured I’d have my second go at this one after the temporary mid-interval HD last time, getting it done before the. Christmas festivities get out of hand

Similar approach to before, with similar pace, but feeling more controlled, and resisting the temptation to go to fast on that do-or-die 4th interval!
Still really tough to get through the fourth, and even the fifth was never really in the bag until right at the end (esp with the HR spike which threatened to curtail the whole attempt!)

Well done all on this one. It was horrible - but intriguing enough a challenge to make it worth trying more than once

Well done to get it done on the first attempt Spider, it took me 3! Getting far too competitive for lightweight seats now!

Well, this was a nightmarish challenge, with staggered intervals of increasing length. As always, I felt I "could/should have done better", though I did manage to nail two very consistent overall times for the last two intervals, though the last one took a sprint finish after a "dying lull". In theory I have some HR capacity left, I find it quite difficult to hit the same heart rates I can hit on a bike, the issue seems to be that I am muscular leg strength/power limited rather than CV limited; i.e. no matter the drag factor, the main muscles in legs/hips simply cannot put out the output at these lower cadences and so reach exhaustion before HR limit. Not something that occurs with cycling, as you can spin a 90-110 rpm to really shift the load onto your CV/heart instead.

Amazing times/power from my physiological "barometer" Ian Bee (given our near identical weight and height), don't think I can match your effor this month! Kudos!

My strategy was in fact to aim for a "flat split" across the intervals. If you go too anaerobic on the short intervals, any time gained there is completely negated by the effect on the later intervals. The contribution from the various energy systems is too interdependent for it to not have a dramatic effect, particularly as the 75 seconds rest is completely inadequate to have much in the way of meaningful recovery in the alactate-CP system. Anyway, I didn't achieve it, maybe if I try again I will target 1:50.00 for every interval from the outset.

If I'm feeling up for it, I might try and improve tomorrow. Maybe. It's a horrible challenge...

Anyway, great set of results from people, some impressive heavyweight power numbers and great participation overall.

Aren, interesting thoughts. I find that in 75Sec I have pretty much completely refreshed the CP system and made inroads into the lactic. As stated above I try and make the best of he limited rest, so with >100% recovery time after the first interval had to go out quite hard to still be getting much benefit from the final 30S rest.

You focus on cadence, to be pedantic I would say it is more the amount of time that significant power is being exerted but the point stands. However if that is the case for you, you should be able to rate higher to increase the proportion of time working, it is surprising the impact on rating of throwing your hands forward quickly at the finish as it acceloerates the whole recovery without much increased effort. The remaining issue is whether you can coordinate breathing as much in the reduced recovery as one breath per stroke would only be sustainable for the first interval. Anyway, great effort.

Thanks to Lesley's great effort we are now only 1 short of a 7th boat on the water!
