One for the techies
I'm a user of Linkedin.
Whilst I think the quality of the posts there has declined horribly in he last five years or so, it's still a platform that I find useful.
One feature is that if you mention a name of a member of the platform they get a message.
This obviously encourages them to go and read the post.
Could this platform do that?

Re: One for the techies
I think this forum does that if you namecheck them @webberg. Something triggers a notification for me every so often. Not sure if that trick also triggers an email, or if that only happens if you get a PM, or if it is configurable.
Hmm. Or maybe not. Namechecking with @ doesn't seem to work here.
Had a look through the BBCode notes and there's no mention of using that technique, although I KNOW you can trigger a notification by quoting - see below.

Actually, I think you might have to quote them. See if this works...Could this platform do that?

You can change what notifications you receive here -> ucp.php?i=ucp_notifications&mode=notification_options
This is limited to either the notifications feed in the forum or getting an email.
As far as I am aware, there is no @ functionality in the forum software (phpbb) without installing a plugin to our site. We have always avoided plugins because (a) you never really know what a third-party plugin is really doing and (b) it makes upgrading more challenging because any upgrade would involve making sure all plugins are still working correctly.

Re: One for the techies
Thanks.
My very simple idea is that if - for example - I'm engaged in swapping places with a member on the MB and I post something about it, mentioning them, then it may encourage them to post a response, increasing traffic.
The above @ and quoting techniques has not created any alert or notification to me.

Re: One for the techies
Interesting -I got a Notification (on the forum, top right) when Iain quoted me in a response just now. Maybe there are settings to enable/disable that.
I can quite sympathise with the admin view of not wanting to complicate or potentially compromise the forum system...

Jon - as ever, you're a star. Does that answer your questions, Graham?
