An epic poem by Free Spirits

Post by webberg »

Many, many years ago we had a go at putting together limericks in which we each contributed a line.

How do we feel about attempting a more "serious" (but possibly humorous) piece?

Let's say 5 x 8 line stanzas.

I have a couple of initial ideas.

One is a journey through a row session from the plan to the start to the cruise to the crisis and finally to the completion.

Metaphors might be with life, getting over an illness or personal crisis, a favourite song (I'm thinking rhythm and cadence etc).

The other is what we occupy ourselves with during a long or difficult row in order to keep the boredom or pain at bay.

I see this as a dream sequence in which reality forces its way in from time to time.

First team mate to suggest the opening four lines gets naming rights.

Graham, I'm not sure if this is quite what you are looking for and as you can see, to start the ball rolling I have written half of the first stanza - therefore feel free to disqualify me.

You can lead a horse to water
But you cannot make it drink
You can lead a man to the rower
But can you make him think ...
