Rowlympic Challenge
Who's having a crack at the Rowlympics later this month?
The Concept2 Rowlympic Challenge coincides with the Olympic Games Regatta. To take part, you need to complete all eight events during the eight days of the regatta. You can do so on the RowErg, SkiErg or BikeErg, or on-water, but you must complete all the events on the same type of machine. You can do the events in any order as long as you finish by the end of August 03, 2024. Good luck!
Event #1 1000 meters
Event #2 1 minute
Event #3 10,000 meters
Event #4 20 minutes
Event #5 2000 meters
Event #6 10 minutes
Event #7 6000 meters
Event #8 30 minutes

Re: Rowlympic Challenge
I intend to have a go, although will need to do multiple events on most days as here are a few of those days I cannot row. Good reason to delay the 6k CTC anyway!

Re: Rowlympic Challenge
Any thoughts on how best to combine the events?
I hope to row the 2 Saturdays, Sunday and should be able to squeeze in 1 in the week. As ever finishing the dreaded 2k is always dodgy, so would rather not schedule at the end. I am yet to record a full on 1k, 2k, 6k or 30' for nonathlon so would like to maximise these if possible.
I was thinking of doing the 6k first as it will be my CTC as well as this event. 2k is my lowest priority of the 4 nonathlon attempts (although would like to finally break 8 min and am unlikely to do an all out "voluntarily" again this season), so think this could be the Sunday (only 1 on consecutive days). 1k is quickest of prioritised, so midweek when time at premium. That leaves 30' for the final Saturday.
But the second events (10', 20', 1' & 10k) are harder to schedule (although any challenge to the above logic would be helpful). Do people think that doing a 10k is easier after a short TT, so after 2k would be preferable (mid week I fear will be pushed to get in a recovery and still have time for the 10k, so not after the 1k if midweek), or should I reschedule the 1k to Sunday (it is the easiest mentally if need to redo for nonathlon) and do 10k after, being the last of 4 events in 2 days?
I have successfully done reasonable 30' rows after hard sessions earlier this season, so prepared to do 20' after any of the others. But unsure how an all out minute will go after a TT and 10' is too close to a 2k for my liking, so definitely not to be scheduled lightly. Do people think that it would be easier to schedule 1 min on the first day given after the most all in row (CTC & mid-term target to break 25 min for first time since "covid peak") and I need to row hard the following day?
30' clearly a hard effort as will be in the red zone for >20min, so inclined to schedule the session I am most comfortable doing as the second (20') after this, yes challenging doing 2 hard middle distances together, but so are the alternatives. This would also be the end of the challenge, so prepared to push harder. That would leave the 10' for after 1k on initial schedule, or after 2k if reschedule 1k for day 2.
Really torn. Doing 2k & 10' after each other might be a boon if the 2k goes well as I will have maximum confidence rowing at a slightly reduced pace for somewhat longer. But should this go badly, facing it again would be a disaster!
Last time I scheduled 1', 1k & 20' on same day to free up 10k for standalone session (perhaps the mid-week and just cut warm down), should I repeat this? Is it sensible to try and do an all out min after an all out 6k? Or would this be a better time for the 10' (or even 20'). Would it be acceptable & sensible to do the 10' rows on "Just Row" (I don't believe that this needs to be verified and I enter my log manually, so happy to put in a portion separately). That way if I do slow down, I can continue for the longer distance and have a second go at it instead of the 20'?
Any other thoughts?
Am I over thinking this, no doubt, thanks for indulging me (if you get this far)
Thanks
Iain

Re: Rowlympic Challenge
Eddie, good to have someone else on this. Are you intending to "double up", or will you row every day of the regatta?

Re: Rowlympic Challenge
I'm going to attempt this, but I am very restricted in terms of the days when I can row which means I will basically have to paddle through the distances just to tick them off. I just have four days in total.

Re: Rowlympic Challenge
Bad news Colin, I can still row Did “grey” session today and decent distance, so will be able to clock some scores unless it gets worse.
Jon, how are you thinking of chunking this up? Are you intending to do any “hard”, or just getting them done?

Re: Rowlympic Challenge
Given my ongoing recovery from back issues the plan is to go very gently. Some of the distances may even form warm up and cool down sessions. My fitness isn’t there for any SB attempts and the risk is too high.Iain wrote:Jon, how are you thinking of chunking this up? Are you intending to do any “hard”, or just getting them done?

Morning all
Im going to try and do this if I can with the proviso from cardiologist and GP that I dont overdo anything lol
Expecting to come bottom placed of everyone else worldwide as I can only go carefully on low resistance but I fancy an olympic icon on the meterboard
Plan to try the 10 first as if I cant do that then theres no point even trying the rest
Lets go Team FS

Re: Rowlympic Challenge
Good for you Carole. Jon's "gentle" would not be so for me and I may have to do some sub-par and well below SB as I don't want to drain myself too much and let the shingle get its claws into be any more! There are 2 "10s", I assume you mean '000m not mins! Only you know your body, but if the distance might be a challenge, it also might take some recovering from. As a result, you might like to start on the 6k or 30 min, a good "trial" distance that not only needs to be achieved, but recovered quickly from so you can row again, leaving the 10k to the end so you only need to complete it, with the added incentive that it will be all that stands between you and the virtual medal.
Just a thought.
Iain

Thanks Iain I think you may be right, I can do 10k or more in a day but NOT all in one go and im not very powerful so its slow
It may not be great rowing or technique but it really helps my blood sugar control

Re: Rowlympic Challenge
Carole, I was only talking about the order. You have made great strides. Only you know what you feel like on a row. If your technique is deteriorating despite your best efforts to stop it, it may be wise to take a brief break and if you can continue after adjusting something or getting your breath, you still did the total distance!

1 down 7 to go. Seasons best just for good measure. Also fastest 10k in 11 years. Time to crack open a bottle of red.
