December ctc - 2963m / 5‘r / 2185m
Hi everybody,
team Age against the machine have announced the December ctc:
„Santa's Scilly Saturday
2,963m (standing start)
5mins rest
2,185m (can be rolling)
Record your time for 5,148m
The first distance is the long race from St. Agnes to St. Mary's. The second distance is from Nut Rock to St. Mary's. Both these are held on the Saturday at the World Pilot Gig Championships in early May on the Isles of Scilly.“
Any ideas on the pacing? 5k -3?

Not a great attempt, went too hard early and paid the price with a rolling start 2nd half slower than the first half.

Well I have been away from any form of exercise, struck down by a nasty bug which I suspect was COVID. I'm making a steady, slow return and have posted a time just to make up the numbers. Not sure I will be willing to push myself ahead of the end of the month if I continue to feel the way I do. Well done to all entries so far, and good luck to those yet to post.

Some great efforts already, well done guys!
Philip, great effort, especially considering you're a lwt at 89 years!
Rob, that second interval looks really nasty and painful, slower pace despite a higher heart rate. I guess the tanks were pretty much empty after this one?
Jon, thanks for putting in a time despite your recent illness! Just don't push things too hard too soon, but yo're experienced enough to know that.
I had my second go at this, although I was quite happy with my first attempt, just pipping Eric by a tenth of a second (in total time, not pace, sorry for that Eric )
Anyway, second go last night with the simple aim to go quicker in both reps. This is how it went:
I (sort of) kept my powder dry in the first rep but was still almost 4 seconds faster than last time. Well, that was a good start and encouraged me to attack rep #2 right from the beginning. With about 1k in things were getting a bit ugly and it was time to open the hurt box with about 500m to go. Very happy with an improvement by 7 seconds

A very special place for me The Isles of Scilly just love the place
Tough session,With Philip again being my target, so tough I had to take a bit of an extended rest to recover.
Sorry about the large pic using an iMac and can't find a way to reduce it.
Where have all the ladies gone I was going to ask my wife to row this but I know the answer.

I may try this again in the post-200k land (assuming I can wreck my way to that in the next week). About a 45 second gap to try to climb back into boat 1, that'd be a pretty sizable improvement.

Well done to all who have girded their loins so far this month and met this challenge head on - some nice intra-team battles going on
This one triggered a very much unwelcome reaction in me at its first attempt A steady attempt early in the month saw my HR at around the usual 150 mark until it suddenly shot up over 200, and after determining that this wasn't a technical issue with the monitor I stopped and the HR initially refused to to drop, finally settling to 130 after about 5 mins. You can see the HR trace disappear off the chart on the screenshot below
2 hours later it was still there, and so a trip to A&E saw me spend the afternoon on a drip and wired up to an ECG to control the AF that I was experiencing.
I was dispatched home that evening, I've had no recurrence and am back to normal, albeit with some apprehension about whether it'll be triggered again and what the long term implications are - I guess that time will tell, though I'd be interested to hear of others who may have experienced AF?
Still, this is a CTC page so back to the subject in hand. Suffice to say that I had another go after a short period of time off the erg, and managed a fairly respectable performance without pushing to the limit

That sounds a bit scary Mat! Glad to hear you have recovered and the return to the event wasn't quite as dramatic. If I'm honest, my days of pushing myself to the extent when I have wondered whether I was putting myself in danger have passed. I still go hard, but not in the crazy ways I used to. Keep well matey.

Re: December ctc - 2963m / 5‘r / 2185m
That's pretty scary, Mat. Did you have any other symptoms besides the high HR? Did the A&E speculate on a possible cause?
I've had an unusually high HR when dehydrated, but nothing like that.
Anyway, glad you're feeling better and were able to get back on the rower.
Cheers,
zoot

If it makes you feel any better Mat, I sympathize- really a strange feeling ad I was just laying in bed. Darn Apple Watch is watching all things.

Re: December ctc - 2963m / 5‘r / 2185m
Thanks all. It was a bit of a shock, but originally because I didn’t know what it was - not only the high HR that refused to go down, but actually being able to feel the heart beating erratically in the chest.
There’s no clear indication of what caused it, and I have been advised that it could well be a one-off that won’t recur for years… that’s the outlook I’m hoping for
To be honest Jon, I too am well past the days of pushing myself to the brink in my training, which is what made this one so odd - there was no real cause for what happened
Rob - interestingly my GP mentioned that the Apple Watch has become a really good tool in detecting AF and identifying and regularity in its occurrence or what it’s triggered by. It’s definitely worth mentioning to your GP if you’re getting these alerts

December ctc - 2963m / 5‘r / 2185m
With Christmas creeping up on us and my weight creeping towards 75kg (where I have never been before) I decided to have another bash at this this morning. Not a great time, but enough of an improvement to claw my way into a temporary seat in FS II....which is sat ashore alongside FS III at the moment. Christmas indulgence means I may (temporarily?) disqualify myself later this month.

Day 1 2k, day 2 3k, day 3 4k,
day 4 of my triumphant? return:
2863m 16:00.2 2:42.0
2185m 11:27.7 2:37.3
5148m 27:27.9 2:40.0
Congrats to those able to float a boat. Especially Pepe, that result is the virtue of experience. I see many of us came and went, went and came back, and had their various ups and downs. Good health and a cheery holiday to all.

Tomorrow is a 5k UT3/UT2 recovery row, Zoot. Then either 6k or more the next day. Assuming I can restrain myself. It was all I could do to keep myself from doing a second row today. Got the second blister today, not too bad.

Well we are now up to 17 completed efforts, but sadly just one lady rower, so we still have only one boat afloat. Any ladies out there fancy a post-Christmas/pre-New Year session??
