Returning back-slider...

Hey, Freespirits!

Not done any rowing for 4 and bit years.

Mainly getting lazy, but also getting a minor heart issue, which got worse for a while, until having an op last April.

Since then, I'm now off the tablets, and waiting to see if the problems come back; nothing so far, so it's time to get exercising again, and lose a few stone :-)

I need to make room for the C2 in my office, and find my HR monitor (probably change its battery), but then I'm good to go.

What's been happening here, whilst I've been skiving?

Welcome back J-Dog. I’ve also been off the erg for quite a while, although in my case it’s just over a year, rather than 4 years.

Like you, I’ve put on weight, but I’ve managed to lose around 10 pounds over the last few weeks and I’m psyching myself up for a return to the erg. Maybe we can egg each other on?

Paul,
thanks for the reply.

10 pounds in a few weeks sounds a bit severe, but well done!

Yes - very happy to be a training and weight-loss buddy - that sounds like a good idea.

Maybe we should measure BMI, as I'm on 28.7 and you seem to be 28.6 (from your sig), and we both need to be 25.0 (where the land of healthiness starts)?

I've been hunting for my lovely Suunto chest strap HRM, to no avail :-( I'm not earning much at the moment, so I'm very keen NOT to have to buy another one.

I'll keep looking for a while, and see if I get the C2 into my office.

What weight/BMI do you want to get to, before you start some gentle Erging?

Best regards,

J-Dog

Hi J-Dog

I had it in my mind that I might venture back onto the erg this afternoon, but the day ran away from me. I don’t think a BMI of 25 is a realistic target for me. I got my weight down to 92kg a number of years ago and people thought I looked emancipated/ill. And that was BMI 26.9. Maybe I have heavy bones!

So my plan is to do an easy session within the next couple of days - ideally tomorrow. I have a tendency to overdo things, so I may find it difficult to restrict myself to ten minutes! But I need to take a long term view, so hopefully common sense will prevail. Watch this space!

Paul,
OK. Weight's fine.

Good luck breaking your erg cherry after a long time away :-) Anything counts, so if you need to do 3 mins, then that's fine.

I've gone down with a bit of a cold, after looking after my wife (who's been ill for a while), so I may not get much today. Still not closer to finding my HRM, despite a search in the loft...

I finally got around to doing the short session I've been planning to do all week. I set the erg to just row, with the intention of keeping going for ten minutes if I felt OK and stopping earlier if I did not.

I couldn't find my HRM or my logcard and it certainly didn't feel easy, but I kept going for the ten minutes and logged 2112 meters. Heading off for a couple of days break from tomorrow and I'll try again on Wednesday (maybe).

Well done, Paul. Great effort. I hope your back copes well.

Maybe just do some gentle 3Ks at an absurdly slow (for you) rate, for a while, just to let it get hack in the swing of it?
