Had another go at this month's row today after a less-than-impressive first attempt. It went better. I narrowly missed a 5K PB (less than 3 seconds), but did manage a new 6K PB by about 7 seconds!

Approximately a 27 second improvement for a 24:50.4

New attempt from me as well. About ten seconds faster, creeping towards the 25 minutes: 25:04.5
Still coughing a bit, I think that 25 min mark can be reached.
In the mean time using the 6k mark to get some more nonathlon points everytime.

Well done Ron and Fred for a further attempt.

I will have a go at this next week on a day I feel strong.

We are past the mid-month point so it must be time to nag. Having said that FS1 is in good shape with 7 seats full already. I will row next week at some point which will give us a full boat with Felton in reserve. FS2 is half full, so a few more times needed to get a full boat by the end of the month. [-o< [-o<

Hmmm yes, we're getting to the "will we, won't we?" stage of the month in FS2 :?

Well, I have to say I actually quite enjoyed that. I know, I know, that's a bit weird.

What a difference a good plan makes! I did the classic Bronze/Silver/Gold goal setting exercise. Bronze was to beat my current Nonathlon time for 6K which was extremely slack (pace - 2:14) - I don't know what I was doing that day! Silver was a fairly arbitrary pace goal of 2:05 and gold was to beat last season's pace of 2:03.5, which felt like a very tough target given the 2:14 in the Nonathlon. In terms of pace management: Blast the first 100m and then settle into a pace I felt I could maintain; increase pace with 5K gone; and push as hard as possible after the 6K mark.

I finished with a pace of 2:01.6. It looks like all of that pain avoidance and steady state training is actually making a difference.

Managed to pick up a good haul of Nonathlon points too and went >100 points for the 6K in the Metanonathlon.

To put this into context though, my 2021 6K was at a pace of 1:57.5. I have no recollection of being able to row like that. Maybe I have been abducted by aliens and replaced with a cheaper model

Nice row there Jon. I've tried 4 times at least to beat my slack time but cannot mentally get past 15 minutes at any sort of pace any more. I'm having another go within the hour but have exactly the same expectations - abject failure.

A couple of things Plummy (1) Your slack time is a time, which is better than no time and is helping us lead this months event at the moment (2) why not try rowing the first 3K at a pace that you know will be sustainable for the full distance and then gently ramp it up for the second half? Good luck!

Captain Nag here. With a week to go we have eight seats filled for FS1, just Felton needed to have a full complement, but the boat is afloat. FS2 has four seats filled with five rowers still to enter a time. Remember, any time is better than no time at all folks.

Captain Nag signing off....for now.

Jon

P.S. I don't actually know what happens if a boat does not have eight scores entered. The competition rules make no mention of this as far as I can see.

I did finally manage to complete a second go (rare for me to achieve that) and although I'd already considered your plan (more than once), I opted for dropping the footplate 1 hole and dropping the damper to position 1 (about 90 drag). I dithered briefly at 15 mins but had a good 15~20 seconds in hand without needing to speed up so just counted off 30s intervals and ultimately even managed a little spring at the end - taking 37.7s off my previous time. Overall is is still a poor time but at least better than it was before.

Ouch! going into the void. Two years to the day since I last erged this distance and pleased to say absolutely smashed that time. Two more kind souls to get us afloat please.

Inge just entered her score for FS 2. Now we need one more entry for a full boat (Chris and/or Louise).

I’ve had a trapped nerve in my back the last few weeks (age definitely starting to set in!) so no rowing at all I’m afraid. But it eased off in the last couple of days so I thought I’d be game and give it a crack. It was necessarily very slow, so you might prefer a time from Chris, but at least it gives us a score (and on the plus side it doesn’t seem to have done any harm!). Maybe as work eases down towards Xmas I’ll be able to get a few more rows in and get a bit faster for next month. Well done to both teams! Louise
