Trying to refocus

Post by Ange LC »

Hi all

Hope your well after having a fab 6 months getting married and having a fabulous honeymoon in South Africa. I am back trying to find my focus!
Enjoyed a training session with Plummy on Saturday where he whipped me into shape and I completed the CTC better time than I thought so hoping that will continue to spur me on thinking about the EIRC potentially next year!
If any one has any training tips, guidance or encouragement to keep me in focus it would be much appreciated
:P

Hi Andrea,

good to see you back in action! As for encouragement, I think one of the key factors of using a C2 rowing machine is the variety of online challenges and rankings. I use the C2 rankings, the cross team challenge, the Indoor Rowers League and the nonathlon to keep me motivated. And there is also the Free Spirits meterboard and several challenges run by C2 throughout the year (like the holiday challenge which is currently on).

And then there are always different kind of races, like you said EIRC or BRIC or maybe even WRIC in Paris next year (perfect location for an after honeymoon vacation :D )

As for training guides I find the Pete Plan very useful if you want to prepare for a race: https://thepeteplan.wordpress.com/the-pete-plan/. It's a tough plan, I wouldn't recommend it for more than let's say three months (depending on your initial paces).
Athletes row, others just play games

fab thanks Peter, I will have a look at the nonathlon and add it to my training plan!
I like the sounds of the WRIC a race then a holiday what could be better :)

EIRC is Feb 2nd 2020 - not ideal (again) for a race appearance being a day away from your birthday (again) :-(

I'm sure Plummy will help keep you focused! Not sure if you keep a training diary but the Concept2 logbook "filter" button is great for comparing current to previous workouts. So you can see exactly how much you've improved.

I found it always helped to have a medium/long term goal, and then train for that. So it could be 6 or 12 months away, but you'd set a training plan to fit that time scale.
Once the goal is out of the way, pick another one, and so it goes.
Examples - row 1M m for the season, race at BRIC, EIRC etc, PB at 5k, PB at 10k,do a marathon .... its pretty endless :-)

Hi Andrea, happy to see you back in action 👍
I agree with Wolfmiester - setting a short/long term goals is really hopeful, worked before in my case 😜
December is my 'start point' after a break from any sport activity 😳 I set myself first goal to finish Holiday Challenge - 100K till 24th Dec. Let's the challenge begin😁 Fingers crossed for your training, stay motivated 💪👍 :)

Hi Andrea,
I haven’t been rowing long but I’m with Peter on this one. I’ve tried a few sporting activities in recent years in an attempt to regain some fitness but none has hooked me until now. Definitely the combination of challenges, some of which are fun (CTC: so glad you kicked me out of boat 1 with a time worthy of the lads in the boat!), and some of which motivate me (nonathon: it may not look it from my scores but it’s a personal challenge to put some decent ones in!), is working for me. Of course, it all regularly gets messed up by life (e.g., work travel), but then the fun stuff draws me in again, even if the Beginner Pete has gone to pot again 😂

Thanks everyone really appreciate the advice and encouragement!!
Louise I'm not sure where that result came from in the November CTC it helped having plummy giving me words of wisdom beforehand!! I'm very much a novice at this too so hearing how you all keep motivated will sure help me over the coming weeks trying to keep to my plan and setting some goals!!
Thanks again 😉

Welcome back. All of the above comments, I'm sure you can find something to hang your motivation on. How about a trip to Aus in early November for the Pan Pacs on the Gold Coast?

I have used the meterboard initially, the CTC, instagram and now a regular group of people that throw ideas out which I can try and use or not, the nonathlon, concept challenges, and of course the freespirits crew and all as above. Currently the CrazyBear Challenge!

Personally I set our State indoor champs in June next year and the pan pacs in November, then I found a good exercise physiologist to help me with the strength work of which I am sorely lacking, I just love the numbers and always trying to beat myself. I am a self confessed addict of the erg.

E.R.G.O.M.E.T.E.R evil rowing gadget obviously made entirely to enslave rowers!
