October ctc - 666 meters
The new challenge is announced: the AIRC halloween howler.
666 meters from a standing start.
At least it can be over in a couple of minutes.

Re: October ctc - 666 meters
An early entry. Was surprised to be able to maintain a sub 1:40 pace.
The end was painful though. HD’ing was tempting but I managed to finish.
By the way, welcome back in the CTC PaulG.

Re: October ctc - 666 meters
Thanks Fred
Hardly done any rowing in the last 18 months - been swimming which makes me very hungry, so I have come back to the rower which is the best way for me to lose weight
Fitness is dire but the strength should come back fairly quickly - I am planning to have a good few go's at this CTC.

Re: October ctc - 666 meters
I tend to get a CTC in early so it's done and out of the way (as I rarely have more than one go). I was thinking anything 1:50 pace would be good and anything lower a bonus so I was surprised with my 2:20.7 (1:45.6 pace). There might even be a tad more in the tank.

I didn’t think I could quite make 2 min pace and I was right . But I was close with 2:40.8 which is 2:00.7 pace. Have a strong feeling I’m an ideal target for Leslie after that cracking 500m PB . Louise

That‘s still a great time Louise, 2 min pace or not. You were sooo close, next time you‘ll easily break that 2 min barrier

Thanks Peter. That last 150 m hurt quite a lot () so I think I’ll get another couple of weeks of the Beginner Pete behind me before I have another go! Louise

Re: October ctc - 666 meters
Well Louise after a 3x10min session this morning I thought why not get something on the board for this CTC. I haven't hit your target but I am planning another go. We are currently in boat 2 together, early days yet for this month though.
2:03.7 pace for a 2:44.9 finish. I clearly sat back a bit much in the 4th and 5th lot of 111 meters. Needs better planning. I can't figure why the photo is sideways on the preview, just tilt your screens

That’s hardcore Lesley, having a shot when you’ve already done a training session! I can confirm my was with fresh legs . And I shan’t be getting any faster this week - another hotel with no rower in its gym and lots of work dining out

Re: October ctc - 666 meters
Interesting battle between Leslie and Louise going on here, I would assume next time she has a go with fresh legs Lesley will get very close to Louise's score.
I had my first attempt last night, on tired legs (4.5km bike ride back from work ), so I'm getting my excuses in early:
If I compare the first split with the last one I think I should have started off a tad quicker. Maybe I'll try that approach next time, but for now I'm quite ok with the result.

Re: October ctc - 666 meters
Agree Peter, faster next time
Nice one ladies, looking forward to your next goes.
Common theme, put a score in after another work out... easy/steady 10k today (42 min), then a pop at this.
Was surprised at Tako's score, as I thought I could do ~1:37.5. He must have been quite gentle.
Anyway, finished with 2:08.5 @ 1:36.5.
Quite happy with that, there might be a second or so to scrape off if there's a close seat race.

That's a very impressive score Steve, well done! You've gained a lot of fitness over the last let's say year?

.
4 weeks with almost no rowing due to heavy cold, work, travel, back pain.... keep me from going full steam ahead (also kept me from trying to defend my spot in September)
But October ain’t over yet

Bah. So near & yet so far. Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy with that but a tenth of a second faster would have looked prettier !
HR started dropping slightly towards the end, same as Zoot noticed with last months IRL. Not sure what that means ? If, indeed, it means anything much at all. Maybe the loss of pace was more mental than cardio capacity.

Sub 2 minutes or not Guy, that's still a mighty impressive score! You're the quickest FS and the second quickest leightweight overall, by just 0.6 seconds

Great rowing everyone. Have to see what I can do with the short stuff, tomorrow I have to row 24K in the canals of Amsterdam, which takes us about three hours, so that's quite different from this.

Yes, thankfully! A few years of being idle, then discovering a local OTW club has helped to move back in the right direction. Apart from the now regular exercise again, we have a weekly team erg session too. I'm hoping for more of course.
Indeed, indeed
Great row Guy
Enjoy the canals Fred, sounds fun!

There you go Louise, sub 2 pace, just . Only a 3k warmup before followed by yummy banana pancake . Fortunately for me I have no travel this month, did it all last month. Up to week 16 of beginner Pete plan starting on Monday, the final week 24 is not that far away.

Re: October ctc - 666 meters
Well done Lesley, easily sub 2:00/500
My mate James has had a go, and he targeted sub 2:00 from the off.
We knew it would be hard, but possible.
result = 1:58.7 / 1:29.1 / 36
Pacing not too bad
200 - 1:27.1
400 - 1:30.0
600 - 1:29.2
666 - 1:30.1

Re: October ctc - 666 meters
Hello, great performance from all of you, had my first try last week, probably it will stay with this one, I am satisfied with it. Right after the ctc I started the 4k ICL on the BikeErg. Well then the legs were a bit tired...the splits:

Re: October ctc - 666 meters
Good work on this one everyone. I have never been a sprinter, and I have also been focusing a lot on low rating (18-20 spm), medium distance (10-15k) rows for a few months now, along with a healthy focus on holidays . So I wasn't looking forward to this one.
It was a pleasant surprise put in a 2:19.1
Pace was awful. Started at 1:39 and dropped to 1:49 by the end But I am temporarily in Boat 2, which is far better than normal.

Re: October ctc - 666 meters
Well that was truly scary! Started my first 2k time trial of the season but HD'd after 1,200m which was pretty stupid as I should have backed off. So thought I might as well give the Halloween Howler a go... but went out way too fast and HD'd again
So in a bid to salvage something from the workout I decided that as today's aim was 2k I should just do one whatever the time. So went for a steady sub 7 (6:57.9). Then, because some alien had clearly taken control of my mind, I thought I might as well just post a time for the CTC. 2.09.1 @1.36.9.

Re: October ctc - 666 meters
Not in the habit of having a second go with CTCs these days and coming off the back of a head cold last week I really wasn't going to bother but a certain Mr Taylor popped in a teasing pace of 1:44.4 against my 1:45.1 so I thought "I wonder..."
1:43.0 was my new pace and 2:17.2 total time (actually 0.1s ahead of Peter so he'll have to have another go - plenty of erg cough and that horrible suffocating feeling for 30 seconds after - bleurghhh - not doing this one again.
