November ctc - 1k unrestricted, standing start

Post by Grobi »

Hi all,

Ski Erg team have chosen the November ctc:

"It's the Concept 2 SkiErg World Sprints from Nov 11 - 13, so the SkiErg Team have chosen the 1000m as the November CTC.

It'll just be a bog standard straight 1000m from a standing start with no restrictions."

It seems we have a season of ctcs in "1 and 0" style

Not so pleasant - well, I don´t know how it feels on ski erg... At least we can see a lot of SBs and even PBs :!: 8)

Decided to have a go at this today. Classic fly and die - averaged just under 1:40 pace for the first 400m and over 1:45 pace for the remaining 600m. Finished in 3:26.5, which was actually better than I had thought I might do - I had hoped to get under 3:30, but was by no means confident of doing so.

We already have four times entered - just need one of our ladies to submit an entry and we'll have the only floating boat.

I have a 10 day window before the Crazy Bear challenge starts and 1k's will be very difficult to find the time or energy for. Add to that I have been avoiding anything sprinty for some time owing to my elbow issues (still easily aggravated by sprints) so with Tuesday being a normal training day I thought I'd do the full EF warm up and do a 1k "feeler" ( 3:42.7 ) - which felt a bit "suffocatey" a feeling which truly scares me and 5 mins later another one with a faster start and hold until 100m to go.
Got this one to 3:37.9 (where my SB (set at Madchester) is 3:33.4 ) - so I kinda know what my target is..

E-clair - well-done with your shiny new PB! =D> =D> =D>

Paul - that looks like a very painful way to start off a challenge. But you did slip under 3:30, so it wasn't a complete bust. Kudos for sticking it out! ^O^

Dave - I was going to ask you about your elbow. Any pain or tenderness on a day-to-day basis? Or only after rowing? If your elbow keeps improving, it looks like 3:33 is within your grasp. Good luck! :P

What is this crazy challenge about and where can I find more information? From what I have learned so far it is a great opportunity to obtain/reactive all sorts of problems with arm/back/elbow/knee (ligaments and joints). Hence I think it is too early for me....

It's a Facebook based challenge to try and row 30 half marathons in 45 days starting November 10th and finishing Dec 24th. The vast majority who have a go don't do all 30 (and that it, to be honest, expected as it is a massive undertaking). I've taken part for the last 3 years and managed it once only.

There's no minimum - just do what you can and log them on the googledoc (link on the FB page):

Nice PB E-Clair =D>

Well done Plummy especially with that elbow =D>

Paul, you just beat me well done =D>

I managed a fly and die at 7am this morning with high DF-160 and very fast stroke rate which seems to work on the short pieces

This was a Season's Best too so happy with that but think I can go under 3:25 in time

3:26.9-1:43.4-40
500-1:41.7-1:41.7-40
300-1:03.3-1:45.5-40
200-0:41.9-1:44.7-40

We are only two days into the challenge and so many FS have posted a score already, well done all around!

E-clair, it must especialy satisfying to do this challenge with a PB, well done! =D>

Paul, great time, fly and die on a 1k is never fun, well done for sticking it out =D>

Dave, great time too, but be careful with your elbow, especially with the crazy bear challenge starting

Alan, I seriously don't think I'll be able to beat you this month. I'd be happy with anything under 3:30, well done! =D>

Yes, good early output by our team. Maybe Halloween has awoken the Free Spirits. (I'll get my coat.)
My row is a two season SB, also the first 1k I've done in these last two years (Let me get my hat too.)

I'm hopeful to see a decent improvement in a couple of weeks' time.

Well done Strider, Rodger and J-Dog!

Alan - another fly and die season best! Ouch. With a little better pacing, you will surely be able to beat Paul's time. :-k

Rodger - a good solid row with excellent pacing! =D>

J-Dog - Very controlled! Although I'm sure it was much more painful than it looks. :P

Bit of emphasis to signify agreement....

Day before the challenge opened, I had a check to see (having never tried a 1km on a C2) where I should target - the helpful pace estimator suggested I would sit around the 4 minute mark. To my surprise, I finished at 3.45.

Yesterday was a completely different story (with hindsight, I'd been out of sorts during the day) and I just couldn't find any kind of rhythm for a decent attack on the full 1km, blowing out after 400m a couple of times before giving up on setting a time.

Body combat immediately afterwards was highly amusing (obvious leg co-ordination malfunction and wobbly arms). Tomorrow is another day :)

Good luck with the next attempt Ian -Water Rowers are definitely different we now have one in our gym it arrived last week-the monitors are rubbish !

Peter my friend I have been lulled into a false feeling of confidence before and you have then beat me, I was sure my 10k last month would beat you , so I will wait to see what happens this month

Zoot, that is the plan if I can beat Paul's time that would be great but hardly a fair test as he is suffering from a bad back at the moment, he would be capable of nearer 3:22 if 100%.

Zoot,
I hear that gentle challenge :-)

It was a weird sort of painful: my need for air seemed to be way ahead of my rising pulse rate, rather than staying in step as it does in the longer distances.

I was struggling to breath properly, even though my HR was only 150 or so. Normally, I start puffing properly at 165 or so.

I used to get asthma symptoms when exercising, but that hasn't happened for ages. Maybe the tiredness, cold damp weather, and sprinting (rather than endurance) brought it back on?

Whatevs. I'll give it another go when I'm properly rested, at the weekend. I was doing 2:15.5 for 10 mins in September, so I'd have thought 2:10 for 4 mins should have been much easier.

Had my first go at this tonight. I asked the oracle of pace beforehand (FS pace predictor) which pace the rowing gods might promise me. Based upon my latest mile and 10k results they said I should expect a 3:28.6 / 1:44.3.

That's awfully quick, quicker than any 1k for me in the last five years (mostly because I haven't done any since Madchester 2011  ). I set myself three goals:

- bronze: go sub 3:30
- silver: beat the oracle (3:28.6)
- gold: beat Alan's time (3:26.9, but, you know, don't tell him!)

So I decided to start out at 1:45 pace for the first half and then see if there's enough energy left to go sub 3:30. That's how it went:

_200 / 1:44.0 / 33 / 123
_400 / 1:45.0 / 31 / 165
_600 / 1:44.7 / 31 / 173
_800 / 1:43.7 / 32 / 176
1000 / 1:41.0 / 34 / 179

Total: 3:27.5 / 1:43.7 / 32

I was afraid my pace for the first 200m was too quick so I backed off for the next 200 and wound it up from there. In hindsight I should have just stuck to that initial 1:44 pace. But nevertheless happy with going well below 3:30 and achieving my silver goal. The golden goal will have to wait I'm afraid.

Alan, you're safe for now and probably for longer as I'm sure you'll have another go. But so will I and I like the competition between us, should help us both :fswink: I hope Dave and Steve will join in though.

Also all the other early contributors, great stuff, let's see how many boats we get out this month.

Somewhere between 2:15 and 2:10 is your current aerobic/anaerobic boundary. What you experienced is what Dave refers to as 'suffocatey', and is the reason I hate doing sprints. I much prefer the steady, grinding, huffing and puffing of a hard endurance row to the panicky feeling that I'm suffocating.

It might comfort you to know that everyone feels this way when they sprint (if they are pushing hard enough), not just you. On the other hand, you might find it depressing that no matter how much you improve, sprints will always hurt.

Zoot,
fair enough. Thanks for explanation.

Sounds more like work than fun :-)

The magic FS pace predictor suggests 2:08.5 is what I should expect, so 2:10 wasn't as bad as I thought.

I'll try and suffocate myself into a 2:08 for the CTC boatage, then maybe go back to improving my 10k.

Unless it turns out a slightly faster result from me would make a difference to the FS points, of course.

And suddenly all becomes clear. My gym audience for attempt number two gave me many, many odd looks....
Time Meters /500m Watts Cal/Hr s/m 3:45.5 1,000m 1:52.7 244 1139 27 0:45.4 200m 1:53.5 239 1121 26 0:45.1 400m 1:52.7 244 1139 27 0:45.1 600m 1:52.7 244 1139 27 0:45.1 800m 1:52.7 244 1139 28 0:44.7 1,000m 1:51.7 251 1163 29
Not as good as my first attempt, but my stroke rate was lower in comparison so there is a glimmer of hope for improvement. Otherwise, I look forward to sharing the F&M hamper for six.

In comparison to my current Pete Plan 1km on the waterrower, obviously accepting that is 6x 1km, I'm actually slightly faster. Which in a perverse way makes all the sense in the world based on my conversion factor.....

For the benefit of Peter (very nice 1k by the way) and Alan, I will be trying to get my time down a bit but sub 3:30 is unlikely barring having one of those days when it all just feels great. Sub 3:29 would be a 5 yr SB so you can see where the ragged edge of my ability stands.

One thing I would add to those not used to sprints - during interval sets, I've always found the first is sluggish and then get improvements over the next 2~3 (certainly for 500's). My second attempt on Tuesday was better than the first and didn't feel as bad despite having just done one 5 mins earlier. I think there is a distinct reaction by my lungs to hard intervals where they get better as my legs begin to fall apart. The key is finding the sweetspot when both are in harmony (lasts a very short amount of time!)

Looks like a well controlled 1k, Ian! Especially if you're not used to rowing on a C2. (I have no idea how much different the feel is.)

And for the benefit of me, could you not exaggerate your improvement too much? I need to have a realistic goal too! :P

Some nice attempts already, well done everyone! I didn't have any adverse reaction from my IRL mile on Monday although still have underlying low level pain so was quite optimistic for the 1k today. Target was sub 3:20 or even close to 3:15 although not that confident for that! Went pretty well but obviously lost pace at the end as lack of fitness started to show but ecstatic that my body allowed me to row at that pace. Will target a greater volume of training with a view to sub 3:15 by the end of the month.
