The B's in Boston

Post by KiwiCan »

Even if I cannot row yet (after knee replacement) I am planning on going to CRASH B's to meet the people. Any Freespirits coming to race or spectate?

How great that you are going, Chris.

I'm tempted but it's not likely to take priority trip this year, since I'm looking at possible (water) races in MA in late summer.

I'm sure you'll meet up teammates, be sure to post a report!

Greg, I will keep my eyes out for you. Maybe after you expend yourself, we can have a beer. Are there any other Free Spirits who would take a few spirits?

I will be there too! I will be registered in the women 65-69 ltw.
It has been a few years since I have rowed there and never as a light weight! [-o<
Since Peter and I are driving in to Boston with KiwiCan,(Dave) we hope to meet up with you Greg and any other Free Spirit.

Since Aganis arena is in the heart of a major metropolitan university, there are a plethora of establishments where one might get adult beverages. We should meet up after we all give it our all.

Sadly not for me this year. Actually, I'll upgrade that to frustratingly. I couldn't make it due to the edit I'm currently working on - but they told me last week that they may not need me after the 19th - which meant I could have made it!! I could still go and hope for a Bullpen entry - but it's a hellava long (and expensive) trip from Scotland to risk not getting a seat!

Next year, as long as the training for the 1K goes well I'll make a re-appearance.

I'll be watching the live stream though! Good luck to everyone who is going.

John,

Registration is still open through this Friday January 29. You could still "get a seat". :D Or do you have to wait until after February 19 to see if they need you? #-o

Ann & I are planning a trip to Scotland. If you come to Boston, you could give us advice over a drink or two. Or we may see you in Glasgow instead.

Hope to see you soon,
Peter

Unfortunately I need to wait as they've got me on hold if it runs over. But as much as I want to go back, I have to be realistic about why I'd be going back. It would just be for the experience, and it's a lot of money for that!!

I can only really justify it if I have a fighting chance of winning a medal now. I've done it once just to take part and experience it - the next time needs to be for a better reason. Which is why I'm thinking 2017 may be a good option. If all the training for the 1k at the end of the year goes to plan, then maybe I'd be fast enough to make a return visit worthwhile.

So I'll take you up in the offer next year - and in the meantime I'm here if you need any advice for your trip to Scotland - and if it works out, it'd be great to meet up.

I just scratched from the CRASH-Bs. I'm sorry I won't be seeing you there. It's a job related conflict, so I'm pretty much race ready, but I won't be able to go. I'm think I will do a consolation 2K test tomorrow at home.

Greg, that's a real bummer not being able to race after all the training you've put in! Hope you can make it next time!

That's very disappointing for you Greg. Particularly as you were in such good form in the run up to the championships.

Best of luck tomorrow Ann. We'll all be cheering you on.

Thanks for all of your well wishes.

Here we are sitting at breakfast in our kitchen. David has come down from Ottawa and we are picking up my stand mate Celia and then heading off to Boston.
Excited, yes, it has been six years since I competed there last.
I have worked hard this past year to get here and I feel I am a winner already no matter how I finish. In the first place I have lost about 30 pounds since last March, have worked on my core strength and have walked four miles every morning. I also do not row the crazy distances I was addicted to and concentrating on smaller distances made it easier to train.
I am representing Free Spirits and believe I am the only one this year. A heavy weight to bear for a lightweight, I think not. I am ready to go.
Tomorrow I need to report two hours before my event at 9:50 for weigh in. I need to be 135lbs or less. Presently holding at 131 and watching everything I eat. This alone make me proud and I am feeling great!
Well, women 65-69 lt wt watch out for Annie, she will be hell on wheels!!

Go Ann go!!!!! Unleash hell!!! :D

My friend Don is in the 9:50 event 5, 80+ lwt men. He's a remarkable guy: quiet, soft-spoken, very intelligent, and has this rock-solid inner strength that you sense once you get to know him. Took up rowing 8 years ago, and last year at 80, went to the Bs for the 1st time and won the hammer. I'll be trying to watch the 950 from the lake right before practice, so I'll keep an eye out for Annie also =D>

Best wishes!

Sad to hear you are the only flag bearer for FS this year - maybe when I hit 55 I'll venture over again (if I'm still able to pull that damned handle with any kind of pace)

And Ann won a silver in a winning time of 9:27.4! Well done Ann! =D> =D> =D>

Oh boy, I knew the women ahead of me was well ahead but I realized the women behind me was gently falling behind. At first 8 meters, then 15 meters, then when I saw 35 and 55 meters I felt a lot better. At this point in my row, some jerk was filming someone in the first row. The white light from his camera came screaming into my eyes. I was extremely upset and it showed in my third 500 meter segment.
