WAARC - May 2013 - 5km
For the few of us that joined in the WAARC challenges I'm attempting to pick up the mantle from Alan who has decided to do his own thing for a while away from Free Spirits.
He's sent me a copy of the spreadsheet he has been using and once I get 5 minutes I'll be trying to figure out if it's as simple as just adding in the numbers or I need to go back to Microsoft Excel school. As we are on the 9th May already and nothing has been set up I've taken a punt (as we haven't really got time to debate a distance/time) and decided that perhaps a 5k would be good to tie in with the CTC. If you set your splits for 1k (or 5k) you can take the first 5000m of your row and use that as you score.
Usual rules apply, age and weight on the day of the row (I reckon I can figure out the boys and girls bit) and post below. I'll put up a chart as soon as I have 2~3 entries

Re: WAARC - May 2013 - 5km
Not necessarily my place to say to be honest Alan, but (hopefully I'm not telling too many tales out of school) he was thinking of leaving earlier in the year and in part that instigated the "crisis" thread, as many of us were thinking the same way (frustration at lack of participation etc etc). After a very brief resurgence it's back to only a handful of FS'rs posting and entering challenges such as WAARC (which took some effort to come up with and construct) so he's decided he wants to be independent of the team that isn't giving so much back.strider77 wrote:Yes Cheers Dave, Whats going on with the other Alan then ?
(If I've got that wrong or you're not happy with that fact I've written it at all AlanS - I'll delete this post)

Thanks for taking it on Dave. I thought (and still think) that it was a good idea.

Re: WAARC - May 2013 - 5km
Second attempt as I've just figured out that Rachel's score should have been better than it was - and I found the error - for a distance piece I need to multiply the final time by 0.95 for the ladies (for a timed piece, multiply the final distance by 1.05)

Re: WAARC - May 2013 - 5km
Good effort Alan - I'm planning to do a similar combined WAARC / CTC attempt very soon.
So is the way do to it as you've done it i.e. set machine for 5555m with a 5000m split so in effect taking the first 5000m? I've wondered what the 'right' approach is i.e. this way or taking average split and applying that to 5000m?

Re: WAARC - May 2013 - 5km
Hi Amanda,
Take the first 5000 as it means you will be measuring 5000m from a stationary flywheel. Taking the average skews everything with the "sprint finish".
I have a slight formula change from AlanS as the only distance template I had was for 2000m and apparently I need to change it for each distance change. I do that tonight and add Strider's score in as well.

Re: WAARC - May 2013 - 5km
Had my first go at the combined 5000m / 5555m this morning - time for 5000m was 20:27.3 @ 25 spm
Weight 64.7kg, age 41.
Felt like a very long way but I guess I have done little more than 1000ms for the past month! Hope to have another go next week.
Thanks plummy

Thanks Stan - at least doing it that way means I don't have to "re-sort" the spreadsheetStan wrote:20:30, 98kg, 49

Re: WAARC - May 2013 - 5km
Had another go this morning - this time just a straight 5k without the 5555m combo so could do a proper sprint finish.
20:15.7 @24spm
Bit heavier this time - 65.1kg but reckon this should still be better than my first attempt.

Re: WAARC - May 2013 - 5km
Not sure that I will do a proper 5555 this month and get a split for the WAARC 5K. Haven't had much time for rowing or training.
My mother in law died last Tuesday (14th.) and I have been with out a bike for a week as it needs rep. The sprockets forth and back were very worn as the chain which started to fall off every time I went out. But it is done this afternoon and I will be able to go out without this problem.
Still have 3 weeks of courses to go to (25.5K back and forth.) so some training will be done.
