Some more lines then :

"You can tell that long-tongued liar,
you can tell that midnight rider"

American artist, sadly no longer with us.

Still no takers?

One last clue - this artist was the subject of an Oscar-winning film.

Had to Google it and have never heard that song, sorry. The only Johnny Cash songs I could think of are: One Piece at a Time, A Boy Named Sue and Ring of Fire

It was one of his last songs, if not his very last- got a lot of airplay on the MTV channels around 2006-2007 I think.

It's been over a week so it doesn't look likely to be answered.
Paul V, you got the artist so maybe you should post the next one.

The song was "God's gonna cut you down" by Johnny Cash.

That’s the closest I have ever come to getting one of these. I thought it was from one of the “American” albums, but convinced myself it was on America IV, so that’s as near as I got.

Having said that, I needed Paul to identify JC first before I even got that far.

Sorry Wolfie, that’s not correct. I thought this song would go straight away, but I guess it’s a few years ago now. Here’s the next line:

No, there’s nothing that I wouldn’t do

Maybe a clue will help. This song was written in the 1990s by an American singer songwriter and first recorded by another American singer songwriter. In the US, it’s often associated with a C&W singer and in the UK with an English singer songwriter.

In many cases it is mistakenly believed to have been written by one of these latter two artists.

OK, the clues don’t seem to be helping. Here are the opening lines of the song:

When the rain is blowing in your face
And the whole world is on your case
I could offer you a warm embrace

I knew I knew this from the first line. It's either Adele or Billy Joel (writer?) with something like "To let you feel my love" - or similar

Actually, Bob Dylan wrote it. Billy Joel was the first artist to record it and Adele included it in her first album several years later - the only song on 19 that she didn’t either write or co-write. Garth Brooks also had a hit with it.

The song is “(To) Make You Feel My Love” and you’re close enough - so over to you.

Correct artist, wrong song so you're close but no cigar just yet. I think Donald Sutherland was in the video for this song.
