Bit of a wild guess but is it Barry Manilow and I made it through the rain? The "And made it through" rings a bell for those lyrics

No idea about the song, but I do know the Righteous Brothers were not related, but that may have nothing to do with this.

Thanks for the clue Jill. I think Peter has the right era, but that it’s actually the Walker Brothers. And the song is The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore.

You have also saved me in the nick of time, from being crossed off Peter's Christmas card list because I was going to be cheeky and suggest to him that he needed to think of a brand of whisky.
Over to you.

No worries Jill. We do not send Christmas cards.
We do have a friend, originally from Scotland, who is actually named Johnnie Walker. His 50th birthday cake was quite nice.
ps: I do know song The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore.

Great cake.
Regarding the lyrics I posted, they’re from a dance tune that was released in the 1990s.

As any other lyrics would probably give the song away immediately (assuming anyone knows it, that is), I’ll post another clue.Paul Victory wrote: ↑Fri Oct 06, 2023 1:48 pm Regarding the lyrics I posted, they’re from a dance tune that was released in the 1990s.
Even though the song was released over 25 years ago, it can be heard quite often at football matches, particularly when a goal has been scored or at the final whistle (if the home team has won).
And fans often sing the chorus with the lyrics amended somewhat.

Re: Name that tune
Let's see. Dance music from the 1990's, sung at UK football games. sounds just like my wheelhouse!
But, in the spirit of keeping this thread moving, at some US games, especially I think hockey, a song by Gary Glitter is played to celebrate goals. I can not think of the title, and the "words" I can think of sound something like "ooohhh ooohh oh" (and repeat).
Hope all that helps.

Re: Name that tune
Thanks Peter. I appreciate your efforts to keep the thread moving.
It’s not Gary Glitter and it’s not “ooohhh ooohh oh” and repeat, although there is a similarly repetitive chorus. But the singer of the song is Italian and I think it may be her only big hit (although I could be wrong).
Another clue for those of you who were watching the Ryder Cup. If you happened to see the video of the players singing on the coach in celebration immediately after the event, Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry were belting out the chorus, with somewhat altered lyrics at the start, but with the required (and ever present) repetitive chant afterwards.

Re: Name that tune
This was doing my fruit so googled the clues and came up with what I'm sure is the solution. I know the song/chant but would never have got the artist (albeit this isn't the challenge) and would have seriously struggled getting the song name as well.
For Peter, there's usually a collective sharp intake of breath when Mr Glitter gets mentioned over here in the UK owing to his conviction for paedophilia/sexual assault of school girls!!!

Paul, like Plummy, I also looked up the song but unlike Plummy, I didn't recognise it at all, which doesn't mean it's not well known, just that there are huge gaps in my musical knowledge.
That's a delicious looking birthday cake.
Peter, I was very tempted to say something about Mr Glitter aka Paul Gadd but thankfully, Plummy beat me to it.

Re: Name that tune
I had no idea about Mr. Glitter's history. Similarly, when I met him, I did not know about the alleged (and now I believe confirmed) preferences of Sir Cliff Richard.
I would guess that no one who hears Mr. G's Rock and Roll played at sporting events in the US knows about him.
Now, back to our regularly scheduled thread.

Re: Name that tune
OK, final chance before I admit defeat.
The opening lines of the song are as follows:
My love has got no money, he's got his strong beliefs
My love has got no power, he's got his strong beliefs
My love has got no fame, he's got his strong beliefs
My love has got no money, he's got his strong beliefs

And in case that’s not enough, here’s the main chorus:

Re: Name that tune
Paul,
I know the football chant (started at Wigan I believe, but now ubiquitous), and am well aware of the Ryder Cup use.
Despite that, and even with the addition of all the lyrics above, I still don't know the title of the song (or indeed the artist) !!
Maybe dance music of the 90's is not in anyone's wheelhouse on here

Re: Name that tune
I think you’re right, Wolfie. The name of the song is Freed from Desire by Gala.
The first part of the chorus (before the na na na bit) goes “ Freed from desire, mind and senses purified” repeated a few times. The Ryder Cup lads were singing “Europe’s on fire, USA is terrified”. Variations on this theme have been used by loads of different football clubs at this stage.
I’m happy to pass on the baton to anyone who wants to take it up. If not, I’ll post something in a day or two. I’m off to Portugal tomorrow morning, so I won’t get to it straight away.
