My cycling history has been mainly road bikes. I was in a local cycle club for a few years in my late 20's to early 30's. I cycled Land's End to JoG in 1991 and in the training I was doing a fair mileage on a very nice Peugeot road bike.
Following that trip a combination of life and events conspired and the bike had to be forgotten. About 12 years ago I got an ATB. This has been used more on road than off and is now about to be donated to my son who goes to Uni this weekend.
My wife and I now want to get back into cycling. We're both relatively fit (we hope) and live in an area best described as "rolling" in terms of hills etc. There are some good off road sections around the area but as we want to take our youngest along (12) we will probably want to be mainly roads with the option of off road if not too difficult/technical/muddy/cold etc.
I'm therefore looking for a hybrid cycle I think which combines good road speed and performance with some off road capability. I think that a drop handlebar is probably not suitable but equally a straight set does nothing for road speed. Perhaps a straight with tri bars would be suitable?
Budget is flexible (ish) and quality is important as I'm not going to tinker with the set up and if the gears start to play up, I'll be taking it back to the shop for repair/etc. Therefore something that is reliable and will not need constant adjustment.
A couple of years ago we had a go on a "Specialised" machine. It seemed to be pretty good.
I'd welcome thoughts and reviews on suitable machines please.
Thanks

Sounds like you want a cyclocross bike. You will never want to ride a hybrid or MB on the road after you have had a road bike!

The "Cannondale CAADX 6 Tiagra Compact 2012 " looks interesting to my eye
The Specialized Tricross Sport Disc 2012 Road Bike looks similar with disc brakes =D> =D>
