Web site problems :(

Where should the web site go - what should we do? Who has the time between rows?

Web site problems :(

Post by Thomas W-P »

Welcome to our new, new server. I have moved the site again. Brinkster were getting worse and worse and it was too much!!

So your donations have paid for a year's hosting on a new and more reliable (in my view) host. I hope I am proved right. There will be teething problems - please post here. In the first instance (since I need to go to bed!) the email may not work since it is being routed through brinkster and that could cause problems. Look for smtp errors.

Report anything you find here please.

Please be aware that there may be issues using the links on the meter board page as this uses a different version of the toolbar, and this is not yet synchronised with the new site location.

email issues should be a thing of the past now. For those in the know, this new server uses "native" php email rather than SMTP. Email should be faster to come and more robust.

I reckon this new server is faster too.

Oh yes, database connectivity should be much better since the database is on the same machine as the web server.

Now, if there is a server failure we are stuffed, but I have not known that yet.

So, I am trying to transfer the domain.

Here is an email I got this morning from the people I am trying to transfer freespiritsrowing.com to:
Subject: freespiritsrowing.com Transfer Failed!
Notice Of Transfer Failure
==========================

freespiritsrowing.com

We have received notification from the central registry
that the transfer of your domain name has failed because
of the following reason:

Ref:12910757 - REJECTED BY REGISTRANT

If you wish to continue to attempt to transfer this domain
name into Freeparking you will need to raise a new transfer
order.

Kind Regards
Freeparking Support.

PLEASE DO NOT REPLY TO THIS AUTOMATED EMAIL, NO PERSON WILL
READ IT.
INSTEAD PLEASE RAISE A SUPPORT REQUEST VIA
http://support.freeparking.co.uk/
And here is the email from a couple of days ago from the people that I am trying to transfer from (the original hosts who go hacked)
Subject: [ #LOT-75865-578]: freespiritsrowing.com
Hello,

Well, we have not received the transfer request fom the Registrar where you would like to move your account. Once we will receive such transfer request we will forward the same to your registered email ID.

Please revert back to us in case of any queries, we will be glad to assist you.

Regards,
Martin
Support Department.
I am trying to stay relaxed, since there are nine months to go. BUT the DNS hosts I want to move to have automatically removed freespiritsrowing.com from my "control panel" - so I am guessing that the DNS will slowly fail.

I have asked the old hosts to put in the DNS for the new web hosts, which should stop any problems for a while - BUT who knows if that will happen.

In any case, the site should always be available at http://freespir.s409.sureserver.com

Progress. It is amazinng what watching 70's TV with the kids can achieve (this week, Mr Benn and Bod).

I have got the old host to point the DNS directly at this web host so there should be no interuption in service whilst I work on the transfer.

The domain transfer failed again. I am losing patience but do not know what to do at this point since both sides say the exact same thing as last time.

For those of you tracking the sorry tale of teh domain transfer....

It turns out that mail to the email address on the domain is bouncing! DOH!!

So once that is sorted everything should run smoothly (he said with eternal optimism).

I have the domain!

I transferred it to a different provider - the one who is hosting this web site.

See: http://xwhois.com/default.asp?domain=fr ... rowing.com

Hopefully it will say my name in time.

Hi Thomas

When I turned on the machine this morning, I was invited to upgrade to IE7. I figured why not and now find that I can no longer see the relay graph.

Is this due to the change to IE7, or is it something else?

Likely it due to IE7 being broken. Microsoft finally got around to adding transparent .png support, (utilized by the relay graph), but it apparently has some bugs. What comes up when you try and view the graph - nothing, or a solid light blue block (which should be the background)?

Ah, there's a similar issue on the home pages area where the writing is too dark to be seen on the dark blue background, but again, only on IE7.

I knew there was a reason why I hesitated before pressing the yes button when asked did I want to install IE7. Not sure whether it was something instinctive or something I had heard, but it sounds like I might have been better off saying no.

Anyhoo, I tried it again and it's working this time. So who knows why it didn't work earlier. I suspect I'm in for a few days/weeks/months of "interesting" surfing.

The meterboard is having issues with its internet link lately, as it is having intermittent outages. I have a service call in about the problem, and hopefully it'll be resolved soon.

Thanks, JL. A small outage is nothing to get worried about.

I have noticed this too. Not sure why. It may be because of the problems with the meter board but it seems to be flying again at the moment.

I thought it was only me!

Lets keep an eye on it.

The techs came out today and spent almost all day fixing my line (pity them, it's 1F outside, and snowing). They identified two problems with the wiring which they've resolved, and then ran a clean test.

The claim is that the line is now fixed and solid - let's hope they're right!
