My secret vice when on holidays is karaoke, so my playlist will have to consist of the songs that I like to sing when indulging this particular vice.

2 Come on Eileen - Dexy's Midnight runners
3 Two out of three aint bad - Meatloaf
4 American Pie - Don McLean
5 Fairytale of New York - The Pogues and Kirsty McColl
6 Piano Man - Billy Joel
7 Paradise by the dashboard light - Meatloaf
8 Crocodile rock - Elton John
9 Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
10 Bat out of hell - Meatloaf
11 Mack the knife - Bobby Darin
12 Bed of roses - Bon Jovi

Re: Send us your music playlists
I can't keep up! Lot of great music there Helium, Stan, and Paul.
Paul - 9 of your 12 are actually on my mp3 player! Stan - I hate to admit it, but I am sadly deficient in Rush. I'll give these a listen. Love Meatloaf, Queen, and Dire Straits. Helium - I was listening to The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly on my way to work! And I like folk, reggae and blues, so I'll have to queue up this list also... although I don't know when I'll find the time. Really busy at work just now (which I like to complain about... but it's better than the alternative).

Re: Send us your music playlists
Come on Eileen, Fairytale of New York, Bed of Roses.
I was going to say I'd never heard of "Come on Eileen" or Dexy's Midnight Runners, but I queued it up on YouTube and as soon as I heard it, I recognized it. (I would have guessed The Kinks did it.) Anyway, I liked it, I just don't have it.
And I know my wife has a Pogues CD, but I was sure I'd never heard of "Fairytale of New York." But it turns out she has "The Ultimate Collection"... and Fairytale is on it... and I've listened to it and rated it a 4 out of 5. So it is on my mp3 player, I just didn't recognize the title. So, say 10 out of 12.
I'd liked Bed of Roses... just not as much as the others.
BTW, you sing a karaoke version of Bohemian Rhapsody? That seems rather ambitious.

One of my all time favourites. I'm not a great one for dancing, but this was always guaranteed to get me on my feet. It was one of the best selling records of the 1980s in the UK and was also a US number one. If you're a Simpsons fan, it gets a mention in the Be Sharps epsiode (when Homer was in a barbershop quartet with Principal Skinner, Barney and Apu).zootMutant wrote:I was going to say I'd never heard of "Come on Eileen" or Dexy's Midnight Runners, but I queued it up on YouTube and as soon as I heard it, I recognized it. Re: Send us your music playlists
Some very "interesting" stuff here.
Helium, I've just set up those on your playlist that I've never heard before (most of them) and will give it a go. I read somewhere that Finland has a passion for latin american dance and the polka style tunes. Did I imagine that?
Stan - I feel that I want to put my arm around you and lead you away from the darkness into the light of the music dawn. Perhaps we shoud try and introduce new things to you and you could do worse than try just one song from each of the playlists so far contributed. I'm not wishing to dis your choices - all music is good, some better than others - but variety is the spice of life.
I used to be a huge Queen fan. The early albums, esp News of the World are classics. (I never worked out why those early albums were named after Marx brothers films though - any ideas?) I found the last couple Freddie did with Queen and on his own very sad (in a pathetic way rather than in sorrow) and perhaps undermined him as an artist. The ones produced since he died I don't own and will never buy because I think it's just cynical money making. Fav Queen tracks - Too Late from Notw and Invisible Man.
Zootmutant and Paul, we should remember that "Fairy Tale" features the late and great Kirsty McColl. Her very last album is Tropical Brainstorm and is a shining gem in a sea of mediocrity. Such a talent in all aspects of music from production to performance. True rock and roll party chick by all accounts and loved by many musos from U2 to The Who. Give that album a try and if you're not impressed I'll send a cheque for the cost.
Paul, I'd love to join you in a sing along but cats run for cover and dogs bark when I sing. My kids don't let me sing in the car. Some real crackers in your list though.
I love Colin's list. Huge Hendrix fan and when everybody is out at home I've been known to crank the dial to 11 and let Jimi express himself. I was also for many years really into classical pieces (an evolution from my heavy metal head banging days) and have a real weakness for Mozart. Loved Nielson (composer) as well. Must look up some of that stuff.
Finally for now, I've had a rumage in Huw's list. Massive Attack, Moby and Muse I'm familiar with. U2 will never be allowed to contaminate my speakers. The others I've not really heard of so I'll be loading those up for a listen.
Great stuff guys.
We should encourage the others to have a go.
I'm also about to put out a call for tracklists on themes.

Re: Send us your music playlists
Helium, you have given my music engine a hernia!
I can find most of the list but....
Jukka Poika - I can find a song called Mulla Svengaa Taas but not Mielihyvaa. (I'm also grateful that this is written and not spoken).
Piirpauke - I can't find the track mentioned but there are several dozen listed. Is there a Finnish (Suomi?) translation of the title that might be listed?
Huw, I know what you mean about the "guilty pleasures" in the gym. My gym plays a lot of Mika and girls Aloud. I'm trying to decide which one I admit to liking would do less damage to my rep!
As I type the Ramones and Rock and Roll radio has just come on - brilliant.

All the tune is uploaded from iTunes exept that cuban song. (Vieja Trova..)
Jukka Poika http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31G6fxYJcJE
Piirpauke Konevitsan kirkonkellot http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qavYkyCTaJg
I think polka, walse and tango is very popular folk music because of accordeon.
It's interesting that folk music mixed with heavy metal is very popular now. It's kind of "red neck" or shall we say "rillumarei" music in 50' and 60'. Personally I don't like this kind of metal

I wish I did. Then I could give up the day job!Scoop wrote:Paul, you must have a voice like Elvis.
It's just something that I really enjoy doing and I put plenty of enthusiasm into it (look at my Facebook page for some photos of me in action) and sing more or less in tune (at least some of the time). I also find that the more I've had to drink, the better I am at singing, but I think that's a common enough phenomenon!

Re: Send us your music playlists
If you look at my list, I included Kirsty McColl. I agree that she was a great singer and I have one of her albums on my iPod. I can't remember the name of it, but one of the songs on it is Miss Otis Regrets. I'll pick up a copy of the album you suggest.webberg wrote:Zootmutant and Paul, we should remember that "Fairy Tale" features the late and great Kirsty McColl.
My kids also won't let me sing in the car. When they were younger, they would get up and sing songs with me at karaoke (see my Facebook photos for proof of this), but now they refuse to go anywhere near the karaoke bar if they come on holidays with us.

Re: Send us your music playlists
Helium, thanks for the links. I've had a listen and can't say that the Cuban number will be gracing my iPod but the longer song probably has a place on the 3 star list.
The accordian/thrash metal is an acquired taste. I think I've never heard a heavy metal track with a middle 8 from an accordian!
Paul, the Kirsty McColl album which features Miss Otis Regrets is Red Hot and Blue - done with the Pogues.
I did threaten the kids last Christmas that I would get singstar or something that works on the various games consoles. They promised to leave the house if I did. Given that my eldest is now 16 I'm sorely tempted this year.
Will be working on my "year 16" list later. That was 1972 so expect lots of glamrock, platforms, flares, orange and brown. Bands I remember from then include Bowie, T Rex, Lindisfarne, Mud, Rod Stewart (will not be appearing) etc.

Re: Send us your music playlists
The musical taste is funny and very personal thing. Never know what kind of music like or dislike. Just listening first two list, but basicly I'm with Paul G. When I was younger punk/new wave (including reggae) was the best music in Finland. I've always chosen harder, more rythmically or more noisier music. In 80' most of people listen to Abba, clam rock or Bay City Rollers. I listen hard rock and punk. Same thing with classical music. There was time I played Paganini's concertos over and over again.
My playlist is surprisingly serene and calm I found my soft side again

These are all from my rowing playlist as I don't listen to an IPOD at any other time
Dakota - Stereophonics
Stages - ZZ Top
New Divide - Linkin Park
Uprising - Muse (recently added)
New England - Van Tramp (Thanks Thomas)
Watercolour - Pendulum (recently added)
Best Of You - Foo Fighters
Smooth - Santana
Don't Stop Believin' - Journey
Streetwalker - Michael Jackson
Rough Boy - ZZ Top

Not saying they are my favourites - but they are all at the front end of the list
Plummy
P.S. Re your themes - tunes you like at the gym but would never admit it... will be a short thread... because if you'll never admit it, by definition can't be put here (I know what you mean though, let's say we are "embarrassed to admit liking")

Perhaps we shoud try and introduce new things to you and you could do worse than try just one song from each of the playlists so far contributed. I'm not wishing to dis your choices - all music is good, some better than others - but variety is the spice of life.
