I noticed we caught up about 0.4% in one go in the race to the moon. A quick check of the meter board turns up a new member with well over 1 million metres.

So a big welcome to:

Scarily close to mine (my 5000m is very weak - the only one I have not had a proper pop at this year).

Are you going to BIRC? And if you are, which class?

BIRC? you're having a laugh!

To give you an idea - I weighed myself today and tipped the scales at 17 stone 4.

6ft 4in, 33 years old. Badly out of shape.

BUT.....I Will be (note the determination!) down to 15 stone 5 by xmas through a mix of nice steady 5k and 10k pieces, laying off the Guinness and watching what I eat.

If i keep under the 20 mins for the 10k (which, i'll be frank, I haven't lately) I'll be happy with that.

Going to save the time work for next spring when i've got a little less blubber holding me back.

Having said all that, I could give that 2k a pasting if I put my mind to it.

Maybe next year.

Ha! I am 38. 6' 3" and 19 stone and I'm mad enough to be going :D

When did you set the 6:55?

And if you can do the 10k in 20 minutes I think you are looking at a 3:30 minute 2k aren't you

hmmm, may have been a tad ambitious there. shall we say 40 mins instead.

2k time was may 05 but i'm confident that with a bit less weight and a week's build up i could defo do sub 6.50.

don't hold me to that.

See you at BIRC then. I'm going for the beer as much as anything. Pulling 6:50 would be a bonus.

sheesh.

now look what you've gone and done.

Just had a look at the 4k challenge thingy.

noticed your name (thomas w-p) coming in with 1.50 split.

i may have to have a pop at that tomorrow.

that should blow away the cobwebs.

(does it work out which "boat") you are in automatically?)

where is the BIRC next year?

Well, we should move this to the meter board banter thread or someting, but yes, CTC sorts the boats automatically. Good luck.

And BIRC is in about six weeks - in Birmingham. I think it is there every year. Entries are still open - it might keep you honest on the rowing :D Certainly keeping ME honest.

Anyway - check out the Training and Racing forum...

Ian, you have nothing to worry about with BIRC - you'll be fine and you won't be last by a LONG way. Your 6:55.8 is a good respectable time. I remember when all my PBs were pretty similar to yours now. So come along and join the team. We'll be more than pleased to have you with us.

Oh, watch the beer though, if you're like Thomas, otherwise you'll start telling me you're gonna beat my PBs after a few pints ;-) All part of the fun though.

(Actually, Newark is a good race too, if you can make that!)

And please, please, please have a go at the CTC for us.

Have a look at the ELM challenges too and see if anything there interests you.

And welcome aboard.

Just a quick note to introduce myself - My name is Paul Gould - i am 41,1.74m and 100kg.I started erging when I was living in the UK in 1999 and bought myself a C2 in 2000.Clocked about 2.5 million metres up until 2002 then stopped.Had a suspected heart attack(turned out to be myocarditis) in 2003 and moved back to South Africa in June last year.In October last year I had further health problems (stroke) which scared me into giving up smoking and back onto the rower.I am a bit of a slowcoach but like the endurance events so the Extreme League is right up my alley.
My immediate rowing goals are to work on technique which was previously non-existent, lose weight ( shot up to 16 stone after giving up smoking) and get my times down somewhere close to what I was doing while in the UK.I'm really glad to have joined a team with like-minded nutters - everyone's enthusiasm is very motivational and I hope I can contribute to this moon shot.

Hi Paul - great to have you onboard. Glad the Extreme league appeals to you, but feel free to try the Fun and normal ones too. We're not just about fast times here - we really don't care, as long as you have fun and stay motivated. Same with the CTC - it's participation that counts, so if you do a 4k+ piece before the end of the month, please log it for us.

Any questions - let us know.

Thanks Mike - I will do a 4 km tomorrow - won't manage much below 17 minutes - this week I have been doing 30000 metres each evening and I am really starting to feel it.I am still adjusting to living back at altitude ( JHB is 5000ft above sea level).I had forgotten just how much your performance degrades at altitude - a question for you. Could you furnish some details about the Marathon des sables challenge i.e. which distances on which days as I would like to have a bash at it.I also plan to do that Nijmegen challenge soon but not at the lunatic pace that you did it - I would be very happy with 16hrs total.

OK Paul - have now updated the Marathon Des Sables for you on ELM. Didn't think anyone would be mad enough to want to try it, but now if you do, I'll have to as well!

Altitude makes a huge difference to your exercise capacity, especially that high. I'd suffer horrendously because I'm not good with altitude at the best of times.

Tell you what, I'll give you 75 minutes start on Nijmegen. Make sure you read the ELM thread about my suffering on this - has some good advice, especially re: blisters on the ar$e. (Also, note you'll clock up a heap of marathons and twice as many HMs doing this too)

Welcome on board Paul.

Be warned, Mike is at the extreme end of the "nutter" league as well!

He did 50k a day for 7 consecutive days back in July! Major respect but sane :?:

Seriously, It's nice to have a normal person on board and I would echo Mike's comments in that it's being in the team that matters, not what you do in it.

Enjoy. :P

Hahaha.

If you look on ELM FS Extreme, and realise that Paul is down as Gouldilocks, you'll realise he's a nutter at least as extreme as myself.

Good on him!

Cheers Thomas. I realised there's been a fair bit of off topic rambling going on, mainly by me. Thanks for cleaning up the mess.

We seem to have reached the critical point where each person who joins starts to help us close the gap on the moon.

Apologies if we have missed you but it seems we have some more lunatics in the asylum :D

Welcome to (in no particular order):

 Chris Hely (10,000m)
 M. Boris Züchner (527,403m)
 Jon D (568,344m)
 Christine Lemon (7,881m) (a relation of Jonathan methinks)
 and an official welcome to Iain Pope (643,000m)

Every metre matters - 1m short of the moon is too far!

Hey - Chris Hely is my first introduction

Welcome aboard Chris!!! If you can remember any of your other indoor rowing since start of May and log that onto the C2 Logbook too, it'll help Thomas get ever nearer to the moon!
