Etape Caledonia

I'm thinking about entering this event next year as a means to an end.

The end is to have something to focus on outside work and give me a target.

The means is an 81 mile bike ride that is over closed public roads and as such requires an average speen of around 14mph. Not too bad and certainly well below the average I used to do on a bike but...

That was 20 years ago and there's a bit of a hill in the middle of this one.

Does anybody have any experience of this event or the area or the weather then or where to stay etc?
