Sorry JR but I wouldn't cross the road to see/hear U2.
Has anybody tried the Marilyn Manson freebie yet?
Gooner is right about the Yeah Yeah Yeah's. The latest single is by far the most "commercial" thing they've done but still pretty good.
If you like good old fashioned punk (complete with crowd diving and spitting) track down some Cock Sparrer. Especially the single "Sunday Stripper". Great video on one of the social sites.
My 14 (nearly 15) year old is into Gaslight Anthem. Can't see the attraction myself and it's a bit bland but may appeal.
Agree on Scouting for Girls - every song sounds the same. They remind me very much of that man who can't sing and just talks through his songs. I think his "band" is The Streets?
Have to say that Snow Patrol don't do it for me either - Westlife with guitars - boring.
My 12 year old daughter made me suffer through some "music" chart show this weekend. I was APPALLED. The charts are full fo absolute dross and the videos for the female artists are more like soft porn movies.
Enough - back to work.

Re: Musical Opinions - add yours here :-)
Perhaps I yearn for the "good old days" of Top of the Pops in the 70's with bands like Sweet, Mud, Susy Q, Queen and the like.
I do sometimes see clips from those days and wonder if the glam'd up, sparkly, made up to the nines boys and girls were serious or just playing up to the image.
The videos I was made to suffer through were really bad. Nobody was singing live and I'll bet a lot that the voices we heard had been pushed through a quantiser to iron out the bum notes. The girls were a lot worse than the boys in terms of creating an image that tried to be sexy and provocative. Given that the target audience for buying their music is pre teenage girls I really wonder what they think that audience will get from a soft porn movie?
If it was just dancing or stage antics perhaps there's not an issue but these were bordering on the crude.
Perhaps (as I think was said) I'm just an old man.
I do like to be able to tell where one song ends and another begins though and running through the latest chart makes that difficult.

Two Canadian indie rock divas well worth a listen:
Metric (Emily Haines)http://www.ilovemetric.com/?utm_source= ... nce_030209
Feist
Just caught Metric's latest album on XM radio last night and it's almost as good as "Live it out loud". Once you hear Emily's unique voice and cadence it's hard to get her out of your head. They've played in Edmonton many times but I've never caught them.

Listened to Metric. English sarcasm so I apologise but is that Avril Lavigne all grown up? Sounds fairly run of the mill to my ears but did like Gold Gun Girls.
Mr Webber Snow Patrol 'Westlife with guitars' Bit harsh their first three albums were very good but I do admit the latest one is just toilet.
U2 Up until Joshua Tree thought they were great. Now they and others are just cash machines.
Mr Webber have you listened to The The? With your punk angry roots you may enjoy. Loughton's finest!
And sorry Mud, Suzy Q etc. The 1970s apart from certain Manchester bands and the rise of punk on this side of the water was a decade of poor taste and as much as you bemoan the commercial twaddle now Suzy Q et al were that decades sad legacy. Anyway I'm off to burn tiger feet.........

Re: Musical Opinions - add yours here :-)
Mr Gooner, I think I agree with most of what you say.
The music scene in the 70's and 80's was very much the "commercial" bands who had images and lifestyles to support and promote and then the rather "underground" element of bands who were more inventive and perhaps progressive (not in the "rock" sense) but who had little commercial appeal.
Consequently pop music became stereotyped and only the "commercial" parts had air play and many genre's ran into a blind alley.
Punk I think grew out of a generation of young people who were tired with the established order and had access to a growing number of small clubs and venues where bands were willing to play for peanuts. It must have taken perhaps 3/4 years before the major record companies got hold of such bands and tried to push them into the commercial sausage machine. Thankfully many bands retained the rebeliousness in their attitude and refused to co-operate. Hence I have a collection of vinyl singles (although sadly no means to play then anymore) from bands who made one record, sank without trace and were dropped.
Some of these are good, some brillant, most rubbish.
From the early 1990's however the evolution of the internet has led to an explosion of music being available but the sheer volume of what's out there makes it very difficult to sift through and decide what you like and what you don't like.
Now therefore we have to rely upon radio DJ's or the like to bring to our attention bands or themes or new examples of established genres. Again the net has made the choice of radio shows very wide.
I think however it's still the case that we all have favourite genre's and much as we try and expand our minds by looking elsewhere from time to time, we are inevitably drawn back to where we feel comfortable. This might be as narrow as one or two genre's or I suggest as wide as five or six. It's rare I think for anybody to sustain an interest in many more than that if for no other reason that we don't have the time.
We are all still faced though with the mainstream radio stations pushing a limited selection of music. As an example, the Radio 1 playlist "A" has 19 songs on it. Most if not all are "chart" hits. The choice is made by a bunch of producers and number no more than perhaps 10 people. Each daytime show HAS to play at least 5 songs from that list. Consequently the perverse effect of more music being available is less choice if you listen only to the mainstream radio.
As Mr Gooner says I do have punk roots and love the energy, drive, passion and often the message and sentiments expressed. I do also make an effort to listen to lots more things (an advantage of an open plan office and internet connection is the ability to wear headphones all day long) and as such I appreciate (if not always enjoy) other forms. I do however have my prejudices. R&B torch songs leave me stone cold. Anything from the muscial theatre is junk. Anything from those acts playing to the pre teen and teen audience repulses me. I suspect that this is not just "old man syndrome" but a bit more widespread.
The key for me however is music that is different. Mozart was different. Beethoven captured the spirit and passion of his age. Debussey was an emotional mess and you can hear it. Dizzy Gillespie was only alive when he played. Count Bassie just wanted to have a good time. The punk bands said what they felt without being muzzled. Hip hop and rap musicians are great because they have a message and are unafraid.
Let's all resolve to listen to 30 minutes of something we've not heard before. Most of us have internet access. Try downloading say the Radio 1 punk show which is Wednesday mornings 2am to 4am (Mike Davies) and row for 30 minutes to it. If nothing else it will focus your mind.
Try a Radio 3 podcast. Download one of the US West Coast stations for those who like "soft rock" (what is the point of that?).
Diversity is the key and discovering a new channel to follow or band to appreciate makes it all worthwhile.

Been using spotify for the last few weeks - absolutely brilliant. Found some gems such as Blockbuster and Ballroom Blitz by The Sweet (yes that 70's glam rock band). Well I enjoyed it.
Now to find Tiger Feet by Mud (my first single - it was a present - honest!)

Re: Musical Opinions - add yours here :-)
Graham, I love reading your posts and very much enjoyed our few pints together at the rugby last year. Indeed I look forward to the next time.
I feel I have to comment though, your strong opinion on what is good/bad/rubbish is just that - your opinion. I agree with a lot of it, it's just not defacto.
Anyway, latest gig for me was AC/DC last week. They were absolutely AWESOME. Simple blues rock played very loud from a good stage set. Even at 61 Brain Johnson managed to belt out all the classics (struggled a little on Thunderstruck) and Angus is still Angus - a guitar genius. (Just my opinion of course).

Mr Gooner, I have to agree that the latest freom Kasabian is pretty good. Much more grown up and sophisticated than their previous simplistic stuff. I'm seeing them soon as well, when they support Oasis at Wembley in July.
I also have to say that the Green Day album, 21st Century breakdown, is fan - bloody - tatsic. Go and buy it.
Try The Script as well.

Fingers crossed for you Neil (regarding the weather).
I'm guessing they must be pretty good live.
I was back on the floor of the NIA last night. Not for erging, but to see BB King. What a guy. Not a brilliant show, but at 83 he's still definitely a wonderful guitarist and more amazingly still has a wonderful voice. Some lovely "anecdotes" too. The real bonus was John Mayall as support, a true British Blues legend.

Weather was sunny and warm, found a great boozer in Shepherds Market, pints of Leffe went down a treat. Got into hear the end of the Kooks. Line for beer tents was longer than a tribute signing for Michael Jackson. Was very naughty and grabbed my 11 year old and went up to some young ladies at the front and asked if we could jump in. Luckily it worked although NSPCC are now after me.

JR
It wasn't a place for ladies of your standing and social class. Firstly there were ladies peeing in cups, flashing their boobies and I wouldn't have been the perfect host after 4 pints of Leffe!! (Leffe in pint form is very dangerous )
Luckily my 11 year old Clo has seen it all before and looked after me
If you're going to V on the Saturday I'll gladly look after you
PS
Wolfie my friend Nibbler went and saw BB King, said he was very good. Liked the anecdotes-especially the one where he apologised to all the ladies for rappers lyrics and reminded everyone that although 83 he was from a rough part of the US and carried a knife

Re: Musical Opinions - add yours here :-)
Took the family to see Oasis at Wembley last Saturday and overall had a very mixed day.
Getting to the Stadium was a nightmare of traffic. Once in the stadium the atmosphere was very good until the main act was about to appear.
Reverend and the Makers gave a surprisingly great set. I may well have to avail myself of some of their music very soon.
Kasabian also performed very well. They did an extended set as The Enemy were unable to perform. Their heavy beats and favourites went down brilliantly and their set list was pretty well thought out. It did drop a level towards the end of 30 minutes which is probably where their original set was meant to end. They did however pick it up again although they missed out "Reason for Treason". Overall, Mr Gooner are you listening, I'd go and see them again.
The main act was just fantastic. Great songs and just an enormous wall of sound. Wll definitely be seeing them again.
Biggest let down was the complete dick heads around us (mainly young men) who were almost all hammered by the time Oasis came on and spent the entire two hour set throwing plastic beer glasses on everybody. Polite forum rules prevent me from saying what I think.
Great gig though.
Next up for us is The Zutons in about 2 weeks. Can't wait.

Re: Musical Opinions - add yours here :-)
Just watched a programme about Madeleine Peyroux. I think her stuff is fantastic, and such a great voice. I caught the programme by accident and it's made my day! I'm recording the following programme of a live concert, so tomorrow will be good too!

Recovering from the acoustic and visual onslaught which was the U2 360o tour at Wembley stadium
well obviously the stadium was built purely for this event and not for football at all
amazing
and Webberg you missed seeing me in my leather jacket/ denim skirt and sexy boots so you missed 2 treats !! and I would have bought you fish n chips n beer if youd been there
today I feel like Ive been hit with sledge hammer- no i didnt imbibe any alcohol- it was all the vibrations of a million decibels
JR skips off happily to lie down
