Fancy a little 100k in December?

Post by Wolfmiester »

OK, so some bright spark has listed a 100k for December 17th.
Would you "adam and eve it", it's already full!
So there is a 2nd session up. I see Huw and I are listed for the 2nd, and Lee and Christine for the 1st.
I wondered if anyone would liek to join us =P~ [-o<
(maybe even Doc & Cweed could swap to the 2nd (same time) so all the FS can be together? just a thought).
Go on, you know you want to :-s

Oh yes, I'd forgotten about that #-o
Not sure it matters which heat people are in coz the chances of anyone finishing 100k without being dropped by RowPro are next to none IMO

So do I have it right. All the people are going to row 100K at the same time? At what pace? Isn't that about 10 hours or so? I guess if I laid off a few days I might be rested enough to do that in one go.

It'll all be at the same time and hopefully Rowpro will behave long enough such that you are rowing "alongside" others undertaking the same painfest. The pace will be entirely up to the individual but taking it very steady, 10 hours maybe about in the ball park. Speed merchants maybe sub 8:00:00

Brings back a lot of memories!!

I will be staying in the first one because that is where most of the ladies are (although the start time may kill me). If I am rowing with Georgie Price I will be much more likely to finish at a respectable pace, as my ego will keep saying, "She is 20 years older than you, don't let her kick your butt!"

I suspect several people will withdraw from the first one when it gets closer. I know of at least one who is not training at all right now.

You see, the things you put down on paper and live to regret
I now have two reasons why I won't be doing this;
1 - very little training for a few months
2 - wifey has booked something for that weekend (phew).
So to quote dragons den, "On that basis, I'm out".
Good luck all.

As this is just 36 days after my 111km, I am not expecting to be willing to do anything this daft. That said, if anyone is keen to get it over with (trial run?) I would be happy to try and get RowPro up and working for my row to start at 11:02 GMT on 11/11 after the 2 minutes silence of Armistice Day. But the pain will be too fresh to lose it enough to want a rerun 5 weeks later.

It looks as though no-one kept their connection all the way through the 100k on row pro but I did notice Lee's very nice new shiny figure on the metre board! How was it Lee? Congratulations ^O^

Thanks all
Actually, although the results on the Oarbits site show DNF for everyone, Gerard, Jorn, Joe Keating and myself all finished on-line and were able to chat afterwards. Joe smashed his own 100k WR by about 4' 30'' coming home in 7:15:05 ^O^ ^O^ ^O^ ^O^ ^O^ ^O^

My own row went better than I'd expected. I had no idea if I could even finish since the furthest I'd ever rowed before was a FM and the longest 3 hours.
This was all uncharted territory for me. I'd done a few 2 and 3 hour rows to try and establish what 100k pace and rating ought to be and had come to the conclusion that 02:09/10 and r16/17 were the numbers.
Nutrition / hydration was a big issue as the test rows had shown that even at that sedate pace, I still sweat over 1 litre per hour! The strategy was to be very well hydrated at the start (as usual) and then stop for 20-30 seconds every hour(ish) to gulp as much of a carb/electrolyte drink as possible, and to stand and "stretch" at the same time. This worked quite well, although I only managed 2.5l in the 5 stops and was 3.8kg lighter at the end
Certainly, there was an "energy boost" about 20 minutes after each drink stop. I've never experienced that before but clearly demonstrates how quickly muscle glycogen stores are depleted.

100k__7:08:05.1__2:08.4__r18__AHR 133__Peak EPOC 75 ml/kg__TE 3.0 :D

I was very aware that it was likely to be very tough between 60 and 80k and so was quite relieved to be feeling quite "good" at the 60k mark. That didn't last long and by 70k it was getting a bit grim with all sorts of aches, pretty much all over. That said, I was still at target pace (average 2:09.4 I think) and "knew" that I'd finish. Sub 7:15 looked like it was going to be a "given" barring disasters but 30k is still a long way and I didn't want to tempt fate.
By about 85k a sub 7:10 looked entirely possible with the mental arithmatic suggesting that 2:06 pace for the last hour or so ought to be enough. The EPOC was about 10 ml/kg and the TE hadn't budged from 1.9 for the previous 5 hours!
I pushed on a bit and was actually pulling 2:03's for the last 12k very "comfortably".
Realising both that sprinting the last couple of k wasn't going to change the overall time much, but also that I wasn't going to be doing another 100k any time soon, I ended with the last kilo in the low 1:50's.

Very pleased that the race strategy worked very well for my journey into the unknown and with the result.

I was very preoccupied with mechanical issues like pressure areas, sciatica, fluid intake, nutrition etc and so took it quite easy cardiovascularly.
