Feb CTC 300m "To encourage the kids"

Post by Iain »

The Gee Crew's challenge for February is 300 metres with normal rules applying. Tommy is keen to get more youngsters involved in indoor rowing and would like the title of the challenge to be 'Encourage The Kids'.

I figure I should be able to do this challenge, even with my current lack of fitness.

I clicked on the link to CTC and there seems to be a new website running it. How do I create an account on this website?

Hi Paul, Welcome back. There is a thread on the New Site I think on page 2.

Last hard session before the million, so as I don't know whether I will be up to a sprint afterwards, I decided to have my earliest go at a CTC yet. So 4.5k warm up, then removed C-breeze and upped DF to 135. 4 100s, 3 flat out and the last aiming at 1:40, target for the 300. On reflection should have set off quicker, tried a second but hadn't the motivation and stopped in the middle:

Time Distn Rate Pace Hrmax % HRmin %
0:20.2 100 42 01:41.0 155 84.2% 120 65.2% - settled around 1:40 to plan, surprised rating so low
0:19.8 100 45 01:39.0 169 91.8% 155 84.2% - counted 15 hard strokes off, pleased pace responding
0:19.1 100 60 01:35.5 174 94.6% 169 91.8% - All out sprint, realised set off too slowly as legs still working at end (although still half sliding).
0:59.1 300 48.7 1:38.5 174 94.6%

I'll count that as a post 2012 best as only 1M below my best in that period in a minute and 0.9S left. As I crossed the line significantly above 5M/S, I will have done 304M in the minute. Surprised at that as I have increased distance per day in each band above 1:50 pace, but very little quicker than that. Only managed 295M in July. Might have a go post the coming challenge if my back recovers! If still Feb will redo the CTC as clearly settled to too slow a pace and rating could have been higher in the middle as well. Neg splitting to this degree is not optimal!

Thanks Jon. That was very helpful. I’m all signed up. Now all I need to do is attempt this month’s challenge.

My back was OK after Sunday’s short row, but I’ve had a twinge in my right hamstring since then, which is presumably related to my short session. I might leave it another day or so before attempting the CTC, or I might get a rush of blood to the head and attempt it later this afternoon.

Thanks Mike

I was sorely tempted to have a go today, but the slight twinge I’m still feeling in my right hamstring caused me to be sensible. Any return to the erg will be relatively short lived as Jennifer and I are heading to New Zealand on February 19th to visit our daughter Elaine. We’ll be gone for just over a month and, unlike the last time we visited Elaine in 2016, I won’t be seeking out a gym in each town we visit.

So I managed to have a preliminary attempt at the CTC today. Target was to stay under 2 minutes pace and I just about managed that, finishing in 1:09.2 at 1:55.3 pace.

I entered my time on the new CTC website and I noticed that they are no longer showing rankings for incomplete boats. And the two partly filled boats are shown in reverse order, with the three slowest rowers (of which I am one) appearing above four faster rowers.

Well done Paul. Inspired me to have a go.
Upped the drag to damper 9 and warmed up. Felt very different and much heavier, and was bringing out odd aches that I've picked up over the last month. Nearly reduced it for the CTC attempt, put the damper down to 8, but then back up to 9 and went for it.

Target was 1:30, with a stretch target of Kay's 1:29.5
The start is always the worry for me, as that's where I typically damage myself. Got through that.
It felt very strange rating in the 40s, after so much slow stuff recently.
Got onto 1:28 and just kind of stayed there, with a little push at the end. Average 1:28.6 owing to all the time lost at the start.
(I remember the 'trick' is to do 4 or 5 harder strokes at the start to cover the start lag, and then settle, so maybe next time.)

Pleased with that as a first sprint for what seems like forever (maybe nearly a year).
Not sure about 196 drag - might need to work up to this.

A bit nervously I set for 300m, moved to footplates up a hole and the damper up to 4 and "went for it". Managed 1:03.9 ( 1:46.5 ) and wasn't in any distress at the end bar being rusty as a sheriff's badge at anything "high rate" (averaged 35). Not too shabby and makes me think sub 1:50.0 for 500 is do-able now.

Definitely ON mate 👍!

Obviously the 400 mile round-trip to Swindon from Manchester was the perfect warm up 🤣!
