The PBs that creep up on you are the best… no pressure or stress, and no risk of blowing up early… just that pleasant thought that “this could be on”. Only then does the pain begin

Great row Ian at an impressively low rating, you know what acknowledging that you didn't work hard throughout means 'though, when are you going for it for real?

Good to see folk breaking those PBs, also great to see the thread I started almost 17 years ago is up to 500 pages.

Missed yesterday, and needed to make up some meters for the Dog Days, so did the hour of power. Shockingly, another weak event from last year -- so my 13437 actually passed my previous best by 43 meters. Woo hoo.

Well done sir - a 43m increase probably shows that the previous one was a genuine "best" at that time. If you'd topped it by several hundred metres it might suggest the previous one was a tad "light". Onwards and upwards!

Well. Apparently my optimum prep for a pb is to row a pb (see the CTC thread):

I do NOT get onto this thread very often, but I have managed to 'PB' probably the only one I have any chance of these days...

Most distance in a month - previously 650k in Jan 2022 - currently on a tiny amount under 700k, and January not over yet...
Has taken me from position 104 on the Meterboard to current 24th...

Plummy - I am never expecting to match yours, as you did the insane 1 million meters continuous.
Doing something like CCB makes me _very_ aware how it is still a fraction of what you did - very well done, sir!

PS - Hope you're feeling better?

Worked out that I can notch another PB - Fastest million meters (for me) 41 days - 26th Dec to 3rd Feb 90k + 830k + 80k
Then down to 40 - 28th Dec to 5th Feb
If I can keep going, I think it will come down to 38.

Wanted to update my SB for the 6k, was sitting at 25:20 -- so I figured I'd try to break 2:00 pace, and shot for 24:00 flat. I didn't realize my previous PB from last year was at 24:30. Scored a 23:58.7, and so they both fell. Thanks 2022/2023 Rob for being so weak sauce on the 6k. (Which is a little funny because as I recall I did the 6k like "all the time" as my general training piece.)

Courtesy of this months CTC - improved season best by another 6s in the 2k, bringing my new PB up 2 seconds. First 800 (even first 1000) was strong - was showing sub 7 as still possible but then came the collapse. You wouldn’t think 3:50 was sooooo long.

Well done Rob. 2k PB is always a special one.

Now you have a target pace (new PB) I reckon you could improve the time again with a classic 2k pacing approach.

For info. my pacing approach was always: fast 100m to start, taper down to target pace so I am there by 250m. Hold until 400-500m to go. Gradual build up to max effort over last 500m.

My PB days are a long way behind me now though.

Jon

Ahhh.. appreciate the advice, Jon. You can see the approach I used was the tried and true fly and die. Next time, I'll give your system a shot. I've been fiddling with the DF too. My first try was @ 130, then @140, this last one was at @120. Not sure which one is really best!

Rob, well done on the 2k.

Fly & Die is always a painful option. Sub-7 is such a tempting target, but would require 13.4% more power so not just yet. Definitely more there if you pace it correctly as Jon says. Re DF, better to play around with it in training as you don't need another point for the H/D demons to attack in a full on 2k!

I'm sure you know, but lowering the DF should allow a faster drive and therefore quicker rating. Dropping the rating in the second 400 is normal after the start, but looks like you went beyond that (and probably started in first 400 as 1st 400 at 27SPM average). I am not one to talk and being much taller your rating will always be a little slower than mine, but if your legs weakened (and work per stroke dropping from 11.9 in second 400 to 8.9 in penultimate, ignore the last as shortening stroke at the end always lowers work per stroke, suggests that is the case, suggests that a slightly faster rating might help, so I wouldn't increase the DF. THat said, the timing at a different DF needs to be optimised as you are moving some of the load to your legs from lats during the drive at a lower DF.
