Virtual Team Challenge 2023

Post by JonT »

I had missed the fact that the Virtual Team Challenge has already started. For those of you not familiar, this is a simple team challenge with the goal of rowing as far as possible in the month of January. We finished 11th last year and 12th the year before.

In order to contribute to the team total you need to join the challenge on this page -> https://log.concept2.com/team

I will get the analyser up and running at some point this week and post a link here.

Good luck all,

Jon

The challenge analyser is up and running now -> https://freespiritsrowing.com/challenge ... enge_teams

It's early days, but we are way off the averages from last year. It's great to see we already have a lot of people as part of the team though. =D> =D>

I was idly looking at the meter board, and it could be we have a lag in joining this year. Speaking for myself, in my post NY funk it too rather too long to find the "join team" button 🤫

Hi.. been a while since I posted anything. Now relocated back in the UK from NZ. Rowing on a Model D in my loft room and also have a Bike erg.

I am going to be 75 this year and getting back into some basics of erging to improve times and techniques. Been looking at Heart Monitors on the Concept2 site and wondering which to get Polar or Garmin. I had a Polar in NZ around 2010 which was OK on PM4 but sometimes stopped connecting. I lost it in the move back to UK. So any advice on either or anything else out there.

Had a good year last year in weight loss reducing from 106kgs in Jan 2022 to 91kgs on Christmas Eve. Gained a little over Christmas but back on track with the VTC plus signed up for The Haul and 15 hours.

I bought first erg in August 2007 and joined FS later that year I think. My dedication and enthusiasm to exercuse is often usurped by a holiday or anything else on a particularly lethargic day but I know barring injury or illness the kit I have will help me maintain a good standard of fitness as I approach the upper age limits. As a former Royal Marine I do have an inbuilt self butt kicking sensor for getting me going when I least want to.

Just spent a pleasant hour looking through the Forum at old Posts and was amazed that Flat Stanley travelled so far. I had forgotten I had posted pics of the time he visited us in Northern New Zealand.

Good luck all those on the VTC.

Welcome back Chris. It looks like your participation with Freespirits pre-dates my involvement by quite a long way!

In terms of HRM, I have used Polar and Garmin but now stick with Wahoo Tickr which gets a lot of hammer on the erg, running and on the rugby field (referee not player!) and has never let me down.

Hi Peter
I am sorry we never connected previously on your trips to Nz. It is entirely feasible I could be back in NZ for the lengthy holiday next November either north of Auckland or just South of it. I cannot bear Northern Hemisphere winters. 🥶

Thanks for Heads up on the Wahoo Tikr HRM. I bought one on Amazon and was able use it the next. Very good so far and cheaper than the two offered by Conceot2.

So I am happily plugging away at the VTC knowing my heart is beating away.

God to hear. It has served me well and as you say, is relatively cheap.

The latest position now we are in the second half of the month. Things normally settle down for teams at this point in a challenge, so the question is can we stay ahead of the reddit team?

A little thought related to the above.

I thought I'd have a play with my wrist monitor (a ticwatch) Vs my Garmin chest strap this morning for enlightenment purposes:
IMG_20230124_093600.jpg
IMG_20230124_093600.jpg (463.91 KiB) Viewed 670 times
Garmin on the top (Red line on the upper graph is heart rate)

Generally, the ticwatch seemed to smooth out the heart rate quite dramatically, but the overall average was closer than I'd expected given Garmin should be better quality (even just by virtue of being a chest strap Vs wrist).

Good luck to everyone with the CTC - we're nearly there 👍
