Thank you everyone for your well wishes for WRIC. Coach is suggesting quite a fast pace - my brain is still processing that request

Have a great day!
Perhaps it should be "Have a great night" since it will be 10 to 1 in the morning here

Cheers, Lesley

While I held onto 4th place, it was a train wreck from start to finish. I would have needed over 6s pb to gain 3rd but I would have been happy with any pb. Right from the start I couldn't hold pace and finished with a 7.45, 6s slower than my pb. I could offer loads of excuses but in reality it was a bad day/ night at the office.

Toronto 2023 anyone?

The fact that you managed to compete at all after the injury is amazing Lesley. Very inspiring.

Watched it all the way through. Its hard to compete in a vacuum like that. Don't be hard on yourself Lesley 4th place in a world championship is NOT a bad day at the office. You should be proud of your achievements & to represent your country 👏
Its a bloody strong platform to build from. And build you will 💪

I agree with everything Kevin says. Given where you were with your injury and the time your race took place, getting to the start line was an achievement.

Thanks for the ongoing support everyone. Getting to the start line and finishing 4th at a world championship really is great. Just disappointed that I raced so badly, really wanted something close to if not better than a PB. No excuses though, I raced BVIRC and BRIC deliberately to feel out night time racing, BRIC was at 2am!

Looking at Indoor Rowing as a sport though, on slower qualification times, in 2021 WRIC I would have finished 2nd and 3rd (500 and 2k) this year on faster times I would/did finish 8th / 4th. The sport is growing and while some people have complained about the only virtual and only 15 slots for WRIC this year I think in most categories a high level of competition was available.

Onwards to Toronto 2023 and faster erg times, hopefully a combination of irl and virtual for us antipodeans where travel to the north is very expensive.

The Journey started 6 years ago with an act of stupidity- which leads to an injury, a fracture- and as a consequence the desire to become a highly competitive athlete I trained a lot to fill this desire. If I succeeded or not- a matter of persepective and a viewpoint of the given possibilties one have. Now 6 years later, again an act of stupidity, falling out of my bed while asleep which leaded to a fracture in MCP#4. No rowing in the next ~6w. This is it. The final hit into the heart of my competetive soul. Everything is falling apart. It's only after you realized that the path of the striving will leads to a dead end, then you are free to open your heart for this otherness. One need not to lose everything, there is no need for a desaster, it is just a small fracture- so am I free to do anything ? Nothing is static.

Damn, Claudius; that is crazy! I'm sorry to hear you were injured especially since you were supposed to be in a state of rest at the time! Here's hoping for a speedy recovery.

That's a weird injury to be on the receiving end of. For such a competitive soul, it must be massively frustrating. As Mat says, maybe you can keep a level of fitness by running (or using a bike erg?).

Thats definitely a strange one Claudius. In my younger years getting a finger injury ( I had many!) felt like the end of my climbing career/the world!! But as long as u manage your return to exercise OK it will have very little/no impact on the level you eventually achieve. I am sure not what u want to hear but next year it will be forgotten, & having 6 weeks off it won`t tale too long to regain fitness.

Many thanks to all of you! Thx for your wishes and contributions. Yes, it is strange - this whole journey - and I hope things will get back into some kind of order. This little fracture is nothing compared to what I've been through. Maybe it's time to wake up - and recognise that wardrobe in the woods after a long time (Narnia). Like I said - it started 6 years ago - and no...it's the whole life to look back on. I'm not depressed about it...it's just a small fracture and the BikeErg will be used and so some walking - no running for the first few weeks. There is a big running event in 2 weeks I trained for - I will miss it. That's how things were decided. From a movie (which one?):
Bill: This is crazy. You're not gonna eat dinner with us.
Joe: No, I am eating dinner with you... and your family. And that is what we're doing. It's not open for discussion, nothing is. Don't you understand?

All the best, Claudius.
Had an obligatory rest period of six weeks recently as well, once you're back you'll reach your old level quickly I think. Considering your commitment.
A pity though you'll miss that event.

Well, the hopes to avoid joining this thread for a while got crushed a few weeks ago. Neck/shoulder/arm trouble is back for full and painful. So no meters for a while from my end. Which also kills my pb project for BRIC. Hope to be still going (as it would be my first race event), if it happens this year, but no way I can improve the 2k PB.

Fits into this crazy year with depression, Covid, influenza, work stress, the world crumbling due to climate, war, supply chain, energy shortage… and yet another blow last night. My condolences to all my British friends and members of the Commonwealth for this loss we all knew was coming but hoped to avoid for as long as possible.

Well it means again, stopping, reflecting, heel, reload, and re-engage. Life is tough but the alternative is far more boring.

That's a tough read Tako. At the moment there's a few of us "going through the mill" as we say. I suppose there's two approaches: curl up into a ball and hope it sorts itself out - or face up to it and do the best you can to push through and come out of the other side. I know what camp you'll be in. ;-)

Stay strong big fella!

Thanks Plummy! Knowing what you are going through your response means a lot. Often feel the temptation to curl up and throw in the towel, but then again, as always in life, if one doesn’t make the best of it and works on a solution it only gets worse.

Sorry to hear about the injuries (and the accompanying self-reflection) that interrupted your course, Tako. Sometimes the body just says "No", and we have no choice but to back off and try again another day. Best of luck as you maneuver through recovery!

It’s been quite a while since I posted on this forum and even longer since I sat on an erg (over 13 months in fact).

Those of you who know me will know that I have suffered from lower back problems for quite a while and have tried all sorts of options with limited success. I’ve recently been to see an osteopath and he has recommended that I go to this clinic called Medfit that offers a back pain treatment that involves the use of specialised machines called David machines.

It costs €200 for an initial consultation and €170 an hour for physio sessions using these machines. There are also courses available consisting of several sessions, but the cost of these runs into four figures.

I’d love to be able to get back on the erg by the time I turn 70 in just over four months time, but I’m reluctant to spend this kind of money unless there’s a strong chance that going to this clinic will improve things to the extent that I am able to start erging again. I’m currently able to walk around fairly freely once I’ve been up and about for an hour or two (or some days, after just a few minutes), but I’m generally hunched over until I loosen out.

I’d love to hear from anyone who’s familiar with these David machines or who knows anyone who has firsthand experience of using them.
