Re: Name that tune
Time for the opening lines then :
"when I look up to the sky
I see your eyes a funny kind of yellow"
Clue : This song has probably one of the most instantly recognisable opening guitar riffs, and is from the '60s.

Re: Name that tune
Guitar riff makes me think of Jimi Hendrix, but doesn’t sound like his kind of lyrics. I think Carlos Santana was a bit later than the 60s - I know his big hit Smooth was a lot later.
I’m struggling to think who else it might be. The Beatles (unlikely - I think I know most of their songs), The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd?

It's a British band, the track was recorded in '68 and the band is still active - they are also the rock band with the most UK chart hits ever.
One further clue : They have kept the same name since 1969

Re: Name that tune
Never knew Quo had so many hits. Of course, they were around for years and years, so I guess it makes sense, when you think about it.
I watched a video of POMM just now - Quo’s first appearance on TOTP. What struck me was how young they all looked and how happy they all looked - as if they were mentally pinching themselves about the fact that they were appearing on Top of the Pops and couldn’t believe that it was actually happening.

Thought this would go very quickly. First clue - mid 70's (therefore likely disco related)

Didn't have a clue so googled it - I've never heard of either the song or the performing artist before.

Re: Name that tune
I find that quite astonishing but musical tastes obviously vary dramatically. There's many an artist (and especially song) posted up here that I've never heard of.
This record charted at No.5 in the UK, 15 in the US billboard 100 (3 in the dance chart) and well in other countries like Canada and Ireland and gets regular radio play to this day in the UK (hence me hearing it only last week).
More lines then...

Re: Name that tune
You have to remember I grew up in 70's and 80's South Africa, where access to music(and everything else) was severely restricted by the regime of the time.plummy wrote: ↑Sun Nov 07, 2021 9:55 amI find that quite astonishing but musical tastes obviously vary dramatically. On the plus side, we were also mercifully spared the majority of the disco, Motown, R&B and soul that blighted that era

Fair point - don't tell Mrs P about those genres you were spared from - they're all her favourites.

Not by choice
In the 70's we were fed a steady diet of Abba, Pussycat, Brotherhood of Man, John Paul Young and the Village People(until the government realized they weren't actually policemen, sailors and construction workers!!!)

Re: Name that tune
We needed to Google this, since we don't think we have heard of either song or artist. (What do they say, 'if you can remember the '70s, you didn't really experience them'? )
Anyway, Ann said "it's a great song".

I’m with Plummy, amazed at the number of folk who haven’t heard of Odyssey and this song (Paul G is excused with his reasoning ). This thread often throws up some interesting nuggets.

Re: Name that tune
The line “love, love is just a passing word” rang a bell, but I couldn’t quite place it. I remember the song, but didn’t know it well enough to recognise what song those lyrics came from. I was surprised at how long it took people to figure out that the song I put up for Jennifer was by the Hollies.Wolfmiester wrote: ↑Thu Nov 11, 2021 6:10 pm I’m with Plummy, amazed at the number of folk who haven’t heard of Odyssey and this song (Paul G is excused with his reasoning ). Anyway, as you were the first person to raise your head above the parapet, how about putting up some lyrics - unless Plummy wants to have another go?

Unfortunately, it appears that this thread has died.
This thread has been the main reason I visit the FS website, so I will still check occasionally, but probably not as often.
Thanks, it has been fun.

Peter, I'm borrowing a little bit here, from Van Morrison and Them:
Peter, please don't go
Peter, please don't go
Peter, please don't go
And leave this thread
Because if you do
Then it's really dead
Why don't you put up a song - we enjoy a challenge.

Thanks Jill!
I was waiting to see if anyone else would respond ( ), and the answer seems to be "no". Not much point if it is going to be only the two of us.
I am still waiting to hear from others, "so come on and let me know".

We appear to have hints from songs by Frankie Valli (Stay a Little Bit Longer) and The Clash (Should I stay or Should I go)..

I think Ron's was Stay by Maurice Williams (and the Zodiacs) and then by James Taylor. Mine was indeed Should I Stay or Should I Go by The Clash.
I will take these as votes that I should stay.
Plummy, would you please put up the next tune.
