OK, I don’t think anyone is going to get this. The song is Abdul Abulbul Ameer by Percy French.

As before, I’m happy to have someone step into the breach. If nobody takes me up on this, I’ll post something less obscure for my next song.

OK, this is either more obscure or less obscure, depending on whether or not you actually know the song.

I’m not sure if this hint will help, but the song was written (and released) in the late 70s. There was an earlier (completely different) song with the same four word title that became a huge hit around 20 years ago.

That is correct, Jill! I was beginning to despair of ever choosing a song that would be recognised. I went to the cinema last week (for the first time in over a year) to see a documentary about Phil Lynott. I thoroughly recommend it to anyone interested in Thin Lizzy or just interested in good rock music.

Over to you.

Thank you Paul - that was one of my instant, ‘ I know this ‘ which doesn’t happened very often.

And now for something completely different: if I was a captured spy, the quickest and most effective way to torture me, would be to lock me in a room and play ( on a loop ) all the songs that I hate.

This is number one on my No Thumbscrews Needed list:

With hands that were trembling
I picked up my gun

I am confident ( sort of ) that you will all know this song.

No takers I see - more clues then.

Just a boy and his dog, we were both full of fun
We grew up together that way

This song was composed and first recorded in 1933 and has since been covered by many American C & W artists. The version that I'm thinking of came out in 1956 and was sung by an American of worldwide fame.

From your clues I am going to guess Elvis Presley - Love Me Tender?? - taking a real flier here

Paul, you are correct about the artist but not about the tune, and here, I am a little concerned that you think a song about a man and his dog, would be titled, Love Me Tender, Love Me Long.

A man and his dog? From the clues, it sounds like he picked up his gun to shoot the dog. I don’t know the song but it sounds absolutely dreadful. I can see why you might hate it.

Paul, I am surprised that no one appears to know this song, as it's supposed to be an all time C & W great.

The man considers shooting his old dog as an act of kindness and compassion but in the end he can't do it.

I confess that I don't hate the song because of its sad content, I hate it because I think it's a load of yucky, sentimental mush.

Yes, I figured the gun was to put the dog out of his misery. Sounds like mawkish, sentimental tripe. Why the heck would Elvis sing a song like that? And 1956 would have been fairly early in his career, would it not?

As I know I’m not going to get this one, I decided to google it. It’s every bit as awful as I feared it might be. Apparently Elvis sang it for an audition when he was ten. Why he then decided to record it is beyond me. There was also a version by Johnny Cash that wasn’t quite as bad. He decided not to include the verse about taking out his gun.

Jill, I’m glad to hear that’s number 1 on your hate list. If there’s a song out there that’s even worse, I’d prefer not to know about it.

I'm afraid not Steve. :)

This has obviously run out of mileage; it's Old Shep.

Apologies to all Elvis Presley fans. And even more so to our dear and for some of us, never to be forgotten, departed canine friends.😘

Let's see how this one goes:

I'm a political man and I practice what I preach

Steve, any attempts on my part to write about real UK politicians, would never get past the moderators. I think that many of us would agree that the phrase ' honest politician ' qualifies as an oxymoron.

Getting back on track, was the inclusion of the song's title in your sentence, deliberate or accidental? :-k Mmmm ...

Deliberately ignoring your clue/hint Jill, I was just wondering was the next line “And I’m going to drain the swamp and build a wall”?

No, and for the record, I would much prefer to keep my nose out of American politics, especially as I have never understood them.

This is the full verse:

I'm a political man and I practice what I preach
I'm a political man and I practice what I preach
So don't deny me baby
Not while you're in my reach

It sounds as if this was written about the ' office antics ' of our former Health Minister, the Horrible Hancock and his latest squeeze.

As Paul knew the answer, I am happy to hand over the baton to him.

I didn’t actually know the song Jill. It was the only word in Wolfie’s sentence that made sense as an answer. But I’m happy to put one up if you’d prefer to hand on the baton.
