This seems to have everyone stumped. I’ll try a couple more lines before I give up and post a different song

So far away but still so near
The lights come on, the music dies
But you don’t see me standing here
I just came to say goodbye

I’m in the corner, watching you kiss her, oh

I really thought somebody would know this. It’s Dancing on my own by Robyn. Was originally released in 2010, but a version by Calum Scott became a bit hit in the UK in 2016 after he sang it on Britain’s Got Talent.

Anyway, I’m happy to throw it open to anyone who wants to put up a new song. If nobody does so, I’ll put another one up. Or maybe we should just give this thread a decent burial?

Never heard of "Dancing on my own" or Robyn or Calum Hill :) :) but that's part of the fun with this thread - there is quite a diverse range of genres/eras covered which makes it interesting even if you can't really participate in every round - I say keep it going and post another one Paul.

I actually recognised the last line of the lyrics and could sing them in my head - but had no idea who performed the song.

Me too, on all the above! Except maybe the use of the word "interesting", but my first choice is sometimes not printable.

When I say really old, I meant to say that this song was written a very long time ago. I was inspired by the inclusion of a song from The Mikado a while back. This particular song was written a few years earlier than The Mikado. although I think it came to popularity several years later as a music hall song. More clues on the composer in a day or two if everybody is stumped.

This is probably too old a song, but I’ll give a couple of additional clues before I give up and move on.

The writer of the song is Irish and was a student in Trinity College Dublin when he wrote it. He went on to compose quite a few more comic songs and later became quite a renowned painter. One of his songs was recorded by Don McLean and a version of the song from which the above lyrics come was recorded by Peter Skellern.
