I asked Jennifer and she immediately said Build me up Buttercup. Don’t know why I struggled with that one!

Given time, you will have less problem asking Jennifer.

Also, Jennifer is correct.

Thanks Peter. I said that I would post a country song that was a relatively recent hit in Ireland the next time I was up. So here it is. It was a huge hit here, but not so much in the UK and a different singer had a hit with the song in the US country charts. Further clues to follow if needed.

I promised clues. This song has an interesting history. The chorus was written in 1973 by a very well known singer (although he says it’s based on a much older folk song) and the verses were added 25 years later by another (much less famous) singer. It was almost another 15 years before the two versions that hit the charts were recorded.

More trivia. According to Wikipedia, this "catchy country-infused sing-along" has "taken on the status of 'Free Bird'"—"in that it has become a bar room staple that drunks love to loudly request at every show, regardless of who the band is". The song has been performed so often live that venues and events that some actually discourage its performance.

Paul, I had to consult Mr Google on this one and didn't recognise the song or the artist, which comes as no surprise as I'm not a fan of country and western.

As a child, ( and this might be a clue  :fswink: ) I loved this biscuit, although over the years, it has definitely shrunk in size. :(

Well spotted Jill. I hadn’t noticed the biscuit connection! Maybe we’re starting a theme here.

I’m also not a particular fan of country and western, but there are a lot of C&W singers in Ireland, so I guess I get to hear that type of song more often than you would in the UK. In many ways, C&W could be considered a distant cousin of Irish traditional music.

Regarding this particular song, I’m sure you’d recognise the chorus if you heard it.

You mention two artists had a hit withe the same song at the same time, just a guess on that alone would be "time of my life" (not even sure that is correct) by Green Day and also Glen Campbell.

I’m familiar with the Green Day version, but I didn’t realise that Glen Campbell had also recorded (Good Riddance) Time of Your Life. It’s not really a country song though, is it? But thanks for having a go.

I don’t think anyone is going to know the song from the lyrics I gave, which are the first line of the song. But, I’ll give the names of the recording artists and see if this jogs any memory cells. The version this side of the Atlantic was by Nathan Carter and the US version by Darius Rucker.

And the chorus starts with the words “So rock me mama ...”

You're not alone. Before I heard that song I had never heard of either of them Steve.

Nathan Carter is an Irish country music singer from Liverpool. That is to say, he was born in Liverpool but his parents are Irish and he identifies more as Irish than English.

Darius Rucker was the lead singer with Hootie & the Blowfish until they 'went on hiatus' in 2008. He became a solo country music artist, but rejoined the band when they reformed in 2019.

The person who wrote the verses to the song was Ketch Secor of Old Crow Medicine Show. And yes, I had never heard of either him or his band. Apparently, Old Crow Medicine Show is an "Americana string band" based in Nashville, Tennessee.

The person who wrote the chorus back in 1973 is somewhat better known, though.

Let me up the ante: I have never heard of Nathan Carter, Darius Rucker, Ketch Secor, or Old Crow Medicine Show!

I have heard of Hootie & the Blowfish.

As for “So rock me mama ...”, what comes to mind is "rock me slowly, for I have never been loved like this before, (baby, baby).

I do not know if that is correct or even close. If it is, the title is in the last clause, but I will not say it since I (and probably everyone else) do not want me to have to pick the next one.

And, I have no clue about the 1973 person.

Thanks Peter.

Was that song you're quoting from by George Benson?

Anyway, the full chorus goes along the following lines:

So, rock me mama like a [name of song]
Rock me mama any way you feel
Hey... mama rock me
Rock me mama like the wind and the rain
Rock me mama like a southbound train
Hey... mama rock me

And the chorus was written by Bob Dylan while he was appearing in the film Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid.

Not really much more that I can post in the way of clues, so I'll put another song up tomorrow unless someone wants to take over the baton (either by naming the tune, or otherwise).

Paul, we just heard the song I was thinking of on the radio, so I did not have to google it: Rock Me Gently by Andy Kim.

The full chorus did not help me, but looking at the first line now, all that comes to mind is "Hurricane", which is the name of other songs posted here, but probably not this one!

Asked Cathy (Mrs. Draggon) since she has a good friend with the last name of Rockey. I am aware that her family likes to sing this song as "Hey, Mama Rockey!", but had no further info on the song. Cathy says it's:

Wagon Wheel - Darius Rucker

(and I have no idea how you would rock someone like a wagon wheel...)

Thanks, Paul!

I don't believe this one's ever shown up here, but it's got a couple unique lines that I really like. Let's start with:

Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end, yeah

Hi Ron, no idea yet about your song.

But, in terms of beginnings and endings, how were the first 6 months of retirement?

Assuming you retired at age 55, (probably just to upset Plummy 8) ), you should add a year to your signature.

I also have no idea about the song. But I also decided to check my signature and it’s still showing my age as 67, even though my profile correctly shows my age as 68. It’s been so long since I updated my signature that I can’t remember how to do it and I have been unable to figure it out.

You're right, Peter - thanks for the reminder!

Other than the obvious (pandemic, attempt to overthrow the gov't, etc), retirement has been a dream so far! :) I used to get up just after 4am Mon thru Thurs in order to get my Fridays off. I did that for 10 or so years. Just the fact that I now average going to bed around 1:30am & getting up between 9 & 9:30a is worth the price of admission alone... :D

Based on the two word hint, I said Closing Time.

Our daughter, here so we can see her in person for the first time in a year and a half, said "gather up your jackets, move into the exit, hope you found a friend".
