ZoomErg sessions - GB

Post by Wolfmiester »

This week British rowing have set up some on line Erg sessions via Zoom.
I have joined Tue/Wed/Thu Am and followed a) a Female Olympic silver medallist, b) BR strength coach, c) Sir Matt Pinsent this morning !
I'm not totally sure if you have to be a member of British rowing or not, but my guess would be not.
If you fancy it, google "ZoomErg" and sign up (another Olympic session on Sat AM)
Great stuff with different variations of session combined with technical tips and a bit of stardust.

Can't find anything on Google for ZoomErg or ZoomErg UK, Wolfie, can you give any other specific words to help find this as presumably my different search history is giving different results.

Many thanks, got that. Signed up for Saturday 9AM, maybe see you online then. Didn't fancy today's session. Did they really mean 4x(8x20"r10")r4'?

that's tomorrow Iain, its a 'TABATA' session. So a mix of firm/light for 4x .. 4min of 20s firm/10sec light, then 4 min steady state.

See you Saturday!

Steve, didn't see you on the row. Interesting experience. Jess did 16k at 2:01 R18/19. I tried to stay in time (catch and finish not just rating). For me that was around 10S/500M slower*. Not sure how much of that is the relative inefficiency of my stroke and how much is from her longer legs. Not surprisingly this meant a higher work per stroke than I would normally use for a steady state row as well as a couple of BPM faster than I have been using recently. As a result HR exceeded 90% of max rather than staying below 75%. hit 85% some 24 mins into the 64 min row.

She was encouraging, but difficult to hear over the 2 ergs. It was also disconcerting that she seemed incapable of talking without using her hands, so took a hand off when saying anything. Internet blipped quite often so it was difficult to stay exactly in time. Also my computer was to one side, so couldn't look straight ahead. But encouraged that my stroke didn't seem as bad as I remember it and managed to keep going and even up the power for the final 2k. Very different experience to my online training (where trainer is only doing easy pace and continually encouraging and commenting rather than the occassional comments by Jess), but far easier than a similar row on my lonesome. Stats were:

Time Distnc Rate Pace - Comment
06:20.0 1,426 18 02:13.2 Deducted warm up estimated pace, Jess at 2:03 R18
10:00.0 2,263 18 02:12.6 In time, internet good, surprised pace so much lower, part way through Jess upped to 2:01
10:00.0 2,275 19 02:11.9 Surprisingly comfortable, but getting sweaty
10:00.0 2,288 19 02:11.1 Internet less consistent towards end, having to push to stay in time
10:00.0 2,305 19 02:10.2 Cutting out, rating 17-21 to get back in time
10:00.0 2,320 19 02:09.3 Jess upped power, working hard
05:00.0 1,166 19 02:08.6 glad end in sight
02:53.0 - 683 19 02:06.6 concentrating on keeping power high and taking catch with Jess, first time SPI >9 for >1min since restarted.
1:04:13 14727 18.7 2:10.8 surprised how close to HM pace despite low rating.

I missed it, sorry!
But I was on for the 3x20/2 R20 this morning.
Sounds like you need to invest in some bluetooth earphones maybe?

Amazing session last night with Pete Reed, 3 x GB Olympian who sadly had a major stroke out of nowhere 15 months ago and is parallised from the waist down.
He spent 35 min sat in his wheel chair whilst pulling on the ski erg and talking to us all the way through about the benefits of low intensity training, his injury and recovery, days in the GB squad etc.
Just phenomenal.

I had a really interesting first experience of Zoom Ergos today. It was a UT2 session involving 3x20min r2:00. The leader was Dave Gillard who rowed for Cambridge 3 times in the Boat Race. He used the first interval to talk about some technique points, and then used the second and third intervals to talk us through a visualisation of the Thames Head of the River Race and the Boat Race itself. It was a fascinating thing to listen to while paddling along at UT2. The tough bit was keeping the pace and HR down as he would up the excitement of the visualised race. An excellent way to put in a solid UT2 session.
