I've been doing practically no erging as I was waiting to see a back specialist. I've now met him and he doesn't feel that surgery is appropriate, but recommends physiotherapy. The good news is that he says there's no reason for me not to row. The bad news is that my wallet is now significantly lighter than it was.
Anyway, my intention is to do the IRL tomorrow. Probably won't be particularly fast, but at least we'll have a full team.

Good luck with the IRL. As you say, any row is better than no row, and at least it's not a long one!

I received a copy of the report he sent to my GP today. He says that my “lumbar spine scan revealed spondylosis as one might expect however there was no evidence of neural impingement. His cervical spine scan revealed loss of the normal lordosis and there was foraminal stenosis on the right side at C5/C6 and C6/C7.“
His recommendation is physiotherapy, with “facet mapping” as a fall back if the physio doesn’t do the trick.
Anyway, off to do the IRL in a few minutes.

In other news......we have a 9 rower boat in the IRL. Colin - if you are still feeling ropey, I would leave it and recover ready for next month's round.

I did the IRL yesterday as promised. I was even slower than I expected to be. I thought I might be able to manage something close to 2:00 pace, but that only lasted about a minute and I think I ended up doing my slowest ever mile in 6:44.6. Thankfully there were already 8 entries for the team, so I didn't drag the team down.
I think I need to start putting in some long slow meters in the hope of building up some stamina.

Thanks Jon for your concern, after a fortnight laid low with clogged up lungs, I felt half fit for a go at the mile. After a very steady warm up with about 10 stop/starts targeting a build to 2:10, off I went with Paul Vs time in mind, try as I did I still failed, nothing new there then

We currently sit in 9th, an improvement of one place thanks to our score being marginally better than last month, and one of the Fitness Matters teams slipping back a little. It may be a different picture tomorrow as final efforts appear.

Touching the Void is a 1988 book by Joe Simpson, recounting his and Simon Yates' successful but disastrous and nearly fatal climb of the 6,344-metre (20,814 ft) Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes in 1985. It has sold over a million copies and has been translated into over 20 languages. It was made into a film in 2003.

You were asking why it is 6,344 meters. The reason is that the challenge is being done as a tribute to Joe Simpson.

As luck would have it (not) my aerobic pain is 3 x 6k so I just added 344 for one rep

I had an early go at this and struggled (as usual these days) to get through the piece. With a collection of small slow downs I muddled my way to 26:14.2. At least it's done and a score is on the board now.

Kevin, I wonder how fast you can go on a full out attempt? 23:30 I reckon.
I had my first go at this last night:
I was pleasantly surprised that I was only 10.3 seconds slower than my fastest attempt last season. Hopefully I can beat that later in the month

After my rage at the CTC session crashing my PM5 I have had a couple of days off the ergo
Anyway, that meant I was rested and was quite optimistic about this one, but I was determined not to over do it. My 5k SB is at a pace of 2:01. So I decided to try to hold that pace for as long as possible and see how the last 1344 felt.
After the warm up I wasn't very confident - legs were feeling tired and I was struggling to comfortably hold 2:10!!
As you can see, it didn't end badly after all. I managed to hold a good pace and accelerate through the second half of the session to finish on 25:17.1. That pace would have easily been a new 5k SB, so that's a target for later in the IRL. I used the pace to bag 10 Nonathlon points while I was at it.
Now to get my focus back on Pete Plan and CTC.
P.S. The table above is the latest development in "Jon's Whacky Web Wizardry Workshop". It takes a log entry from Concept2 Log and formats it as a nice table on the forum, rather than the mess you get if you just cut and paste the text from the website page. Watch this space.

Today I was meant to do 2 x 5k at R26 but thought a 6344 was a good idea. I held it to 1:52 ish until the last 1k. I opened all cylinders up with 500 to go
I think I could go faster but the BRIC is calling me to be sensible
