Paul, if it's any consolation, after googling this, I have seen the film ( ages ago ) and know the song ( and I'm sure others will too ) but unless I had watched the film recently, would not have made the connection. Please forgive our ' mash potato ' memories.

I have taken the liberty ( downright cheek ) of adding another clue: this herb is for remembrance.

I’m amazed that nobody remembers this song. Some final lyrics and if nobody recognises these within the next day or so, I’ll put another one up.

There's something about her hand holding mine
It's a feeling that's fine
And I just gotta say
She's really got a magical spell
And it's working so well
That I can't get away

I can understand why you might think of that song, but that’s not it. It’s a much more upbeat song.

Not sure what happened to the reply I tried to write on my phone, but it seems to have disappeared.

In brief, now after midnight, Jill's herb clue made me think of "Rosemary", as in "love grows where my Rosemary goes, but nobody knows but me".

I don't know the herb of rememberance or the movie.

Hi Peter

I guess that’s close enough. The song is called Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes) and it was performed by Edison Lighthouse. The movie was Shallow Hal, starring Jack Black and Gwyneth Paltrow (who played a character called Rosemary).

By the way, the next line is “And nobody knows like me”.

Over to you.

Thanks Paul.

I wrote my reply on my phone after getting a somewhat feeble brain wave. I lost the post after hitting the back rather than down arrow, and all my one-finger typing disappeared. I retyped a shorted version, and waited until now to type on a real computer keyboard.

In my unposted post, I originally said " 'Rosemary', as in 'love grows where my Rosemary goes, but nobody knows but me'. Hopefully, the actual title is in there somewhere." And, I first wrote "and nobody knows but me". Still wrong, but closer. #-o

I am looking forward to my mood improving next month, but until then:

"but I got so damned depressed"

Unfortunately, that's another line that doesn't ring any bells whatsoever. Was it a hit this side of the Atlantic?

Sorry Paul, it looks like it charted in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Not the UK, which may be why they named the group "America". :^o

I mostly remember to look at the UK charts. but sometimes I am happy just to think of a song that has not already been used.

The only song I can think of by America is A Horse With No Name, which I think was pretty much a worldwide hit. But it’s clearly not that.

Maybe someone from your side of the pond will recognise it?

Thanks - I thought America was formed in the UK by children of US servicemen based over here.
I was living in SA when the band were in their prime and they were quite big over there.

A UK song this time :

"No 999 make their living from crime,
The house is always empty cos they're all doing time"

Fancy knowing that! I looked them up on Wikipedia and you're spot on. No idea about your song - sounds like a rapper.

  Unfortunately I have a great memory for meaningless trivia - my song is 90's UK, not a rapper.
Oviously not one you have added to your karaoke repertoire then :) :) .

Not yet! I’d like to think that karaoke might become feasible again at some point in the future, but right now I’d settle for just being able to travel back over to Portugal again. As for your song - haven’t a clue!
