Heptathlon Challenge

Post by fkoene »

As some of you probably have noticed Concept2 has come up with a new challenge. Seven events in the first seven days of June. They want to keep us fit and busy it seems. You can do them in any order, on any day you want as long as it's in that first week.
1000 meters
1 minute
10000 meters
20 minutes
1609 meters (one mile)
10 minutes
6000 meters

And an extra challenge for Tako to come up with a new icon?

Personally I think I will row them all but presumably not all in full speed. And perhaps a bit later in the week because the weather seeems to be less warm then over here.
For all those willing to participate: have fun :fswink:

Yes I’d just spotted this. It’s always good to keep Tako on his toes looking for new icons

I think I will do this, taking some steady and using some of the sessions to try to get some Nonathlon points.

Didn't manage it anyway (back already beginning to ache), but wondered whether we had the half-century challenge set up on the metereboard (I think unlikely anyone did teh Century, although surprising how many did worldwide!). WIll start this and see how the back holds up!

Last time I checked I saw no free spirits doing the 50k or 100k for the marathon challenge, hence no icon. I did the 50k last season, but no big glory except for the certificate. The 100k might result in a pin of I am not wrong.

Well that was a β€œhigh value session”. I did the 1 mile and 6k for the Haptathlon. Beat my SB for last year on the 6k by 25 seconds, which should serve me well on Nonathlon and Metanonathlon points, and to top it all a Lifetime Gold Star for 3m metres.

Time well spent!

Well done John!!! Congrats on the 3MM

I used 4 of the 7 to fill up my Lifetime meters to 9,200,000, which I started logging when I joined C2 logbook exactly 4 years ago, that means an average of 2,300,000m every year.

No great times, but I got them done:

1k (3:45.1, +7 Nonathlon points, but 2.4S slower than May), Mile (6:12.9, only managed R29 after 3 sessions in 17 days) and 20' (tiring by then, so 4728M R23) for me. Not bad as only second session back from a minor back issue. Online 4 x 8' R2:30 tomorrow, so wanted to get some in the bag.

Just one distance for me, 1609 meters in 5:48.2, a 1:48.2 pace. Better then my 2K pace recently, as it should be, so I consider this one done.
Very efficient day for some of you, respect ^O^

10 minutes as a warm up and then 20 minutes as a rate pyramid of 18/20/22/20/18 spm for me today. I’m usually quite tight when it comes to stroke rates but I got a bit sloppy at the end of the 20mins today for some reason. I blame the heat and listening to a fairly odd Tango compilation on Spotify Image

10k, 1k and 1min remaining. I hope for some Nonathlon points from the distance rows so may wait until later this week.

Two for me today. Warm as well here, again, so I keep the ranking distances for later this week, when it gets cooler they say.
I wanted to row 10 minutes in five splits going down from 1:54 to 1:50. Felt pretty okay, went a bit faster overall.
The one minute, last month's CTC, I was hoping for 330, thinking more of 325. Pleased with the 336 with negative splits this time as well. Nine meters less then last month but for this heptathlon I think it's good enough.
Hopefully later this week some more nonathlon points for the 10K, 6K and 1K. And find some room for the 20 minutes.

Reverse splits and 336 on the 1 minute is great going Fred. Because if the physiology involved negative splits over that time are a very difficult thing to achieve. You have a very healthy and effective glycolytic system ^O^ =D>

Isn’t a Heptaphlon normally done in two days???
Did the missing 10min, 6k and 10k today.
So all 7 done, where only the 6k gave a slight improvement for the Nonathlon.

Well 5 days left to improve the scores.....

Thanks, Jon. Good to hear my body seems to work okay.

Tako, people who normally do a heptathlon in two days are fully dedicated to their sports. I guess you're in that category as well.

A bit earlier today, not that warm yet in the room where I row, had a go for the 10K. Aimed for 39 minutes and went according to plan. In the end managed to sprint to 38:54.5.
This also lead to 17 points extra in the Nonathlon, my second 900+ score this season.

Nice going Fred & Tako. THe Heptathlon is all explosive events except the last (800m), doesn't involve 3 middle distances!

I did the 10' and 1' today, less of a recovery session from my long intervals yesterday than usual! Can only hope that it doesn't detract too much from the 6k scheduled for tomorrow. Intended to do the 10' at a comfortablish pace just above threshold. I guess my limited training until recently &/or effect of 2 tough days in my legs made this much harder than expected, would have H/D if gone any faster (got really close several times). 1' surprisingly beat my CTC score of a few days ago. I know that wasn't all out, pleasantly surprised. Results:

Time Distnc Rate Pace
02:00 504 28 01:59.0 - This doesn't feel as easy as it should
02:00 503 27 01:59.3 - Seeing 2:01s and having to push rate
02:00 502 26 01:59.5 - H/D Demon tempting me throughout
02:00 501 27 01:59.8 - glimmer of finish in sight
02:00 516 29 01:56.3 - Managed a bit of a sprint
10:00 2526 27.4 1:58.8
01:00 301 45 01:39.7 - Df started at 132, but C-breeze blew over cover so reduced. 5 down.

Thanks Tako. I hope to reach another 900 with the 6K later this week.
I just went through my older nonathlon results and it's in the last few years that I regularly manage to score over 900. So my advice is to just grow older and keep on rowing :fswink:

Well, I guess sometimes it is better to be older :-)

For the Heptathlon I reused the gold medal from the Rio Olympics challenge.
However, the script I normally use seems to have an issue with the Heptathlon, maybe as they split between erg types, so I had to stop the auto update for now. Will run later again manually unless Thomas finds a way to fix it.

I officially finished the event with a 10k. I was really pleased with this row. I set myself the target of sub-42 and not doing most of the event in the red.

Image

41:07 is way better than my SB for this season (42:14) and last (42:16) so some handy points for the Nonathlon and Meta-nonathlon for me. I’m really enjoying rowing at lower ratings and I’m hoping it will convert to faster times over shorter distances.

I’ll soon find out because I will do the 1k again this weekend. The 1k today was just part of my warm up.

Nice 10k Jon. I'm doing mine within the hour though I think it will be a bit slower. Need to do a 2045m warm up first (for a specific reason ;-) )

Today I did a 20 minute row during lunch-break (which is not always strongly defined when working at home). Since it's not a ranking item didn't go full. Divided it in five splits, starting with 1:58 pace and as goal every split one second fast. Went pretty okay, good rehearsal for the 6K that's still open.
Later this afternoon I rowed the 1K. I was pleased with the result. Faster then last season and a nonathlon score of 903. The first time I think that I scored more then 900 points on this distance. Started too fast, wouldn't have been able to keep that pace all the way, held back a little and was able to speed up in the fourth and fifth split.
Three days left for the 6K now.

Took a day off yesterday as tired after 3 hard days rowing back to back on my return from injury. 6k today. Attempted to maintain 2:04 and see what was left at the end:

Time Distnc Rate Pace
04:06.9 1,000 25 02:03.5
04:07.8 1,000 24 02:03.9 - struggling to keep to pace
04:08.0 1,000 24 02:04.0 - rating dropping, faster last 150 to make target
04:07.7 1,000 24 02:03.8 - not sure achievable
04:07.9 1,000 24 02:03.9 - pushed last 200 to make target
04:01.3 1,000 26 02:00.7 - pushed last 600, found something with 280M to go
24:39.7 6,000 24.5 2:03.3 - Post 2012 Best by 7.3S will take that, Green for 5k & 6k.

Just 10k to go and 2 days to do it, will need both days if I am to make it a serious effort.

Just finished my last one, the 6K. Goal was 23 minutes, a flat race up till 600 meters or so before the end. Speeded up a little. Felt okay during the race but didn't want to go faster, being afraid I would HD perhaps. And I wanted to finish the last heptathlon event of course.
Pretty happy with how it went overall, the three nonathlon events all above 900 points, today 913 points, but primarily happy with yesterday's 1K, the first 900+ 1K.
