When I saw that line, I was going to guess The Gambler by Kenny Rogers, but I know that's also wrong. You gotta know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em...

I know the tune... I just can't place it.

John Cougar... John Mellancamp... John Cougar Mellancamp Cougar... comes to mind... but I don't think that's right, either.

No correct guesses yet.

More lyrics:

I thought this would be easier.

A bit more of the chorus:

"If I spring a leak she mends me
I don't have to speak, she defends me
A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one"

I definitely know the tune. From the early 70s, right? Sort of a blues-rock song?

Every time I try to catch the lyrics I segue into "I fought the law, and the law won" which isn't right (different decade, I think).

Cheers, :P

Peter, is this "The Load"? I watched "The Band" documentary a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it though I'd (ashamedly) never heard of them before that! In reading your clues, I almost guessed "The Load" by "The Band" earlier, but had no confidence in my prowess.

And sorry, I do that all the time with this song - I meant "The Weight"!!

The lyrics talk about "take a load off", and I don't recall hearing "weight" in there, so I always go to "The Load" first.... LoL...

Sorry Ron, The Weight is a different song by the same band. (And that one is Fanny and not Bessie!)

I'm not surprised, I didn't have a lot of confidence. I'm guessing that I'm recalling some of your lyrics from watching "The Last Waltz", but The Weight is the only song of theirs that I can actually (eventually) name... :D

After Peter's generous clues and Ron's contributions, I think ( as we say over here ) that I can ' nail this one '. is it Cripple Creek?

We have a winner, but first, a few announcements.

Happy Birthday Ron. =D>

This comment made me think a bit, and I realized that I have Music From Big Pink and The Band LPs from when they were released, a VCR tape of The Last Waltz, and a copy of The Band Songbook, for those (increasingly rare  ) times I sit down at the piano.

Jill, perhaps some of your nails were bent, since you managed to nail only half of the title. (I am not going to make any remarks about nails versus screws. :^o ) In any event. the Panel of Judges has awarded you the next turn, for getting most of "Up On Cripple Creek".

The First Cut is the Deepest - (the version I know is by)Sheryl Crow, but I know it's a cover from way back.

Thanks for the birthday wishes, Peter! It was a nice, uneventful day! :)

I've got a couple different ideas on how to go about with the clues. I've decided to go slightly unconventional. The lines are sequentially correct, but neither is entirely complete.

Put on a little make-up...
Make sure they get your good side...

Wolfie, I don't know that tune, so I have to say "No" though it may have similar lyrics to the song I'm posting... :)

I know you folks know this tune, so I'm going to keep the clues coming...

Artist is from the UK, and currently active (per Wikipedia, though I rarely hear of the artist anymore). The song is kind of a punkish dance number that debuted in 1982. It hit #1 in the UK, #1 in Australia, and Top Ten in the US.

The great Aretha Franklin ... official title is "I say a little prayer" and now I've looked it up, the words I was thinking of are
" The moment I wake up / Before I put on my makeup (Makeup) / I say a little (Prayer for you) "

I should still know your new one though #-o

I know, I know - blasphemy, heresy, etc... :)

She was a little before my time as I'm a child of the late 70's & 80's. That, and I'm not very sophistimicated... :D

Anyway, here's the next clue. If you read/sing with the right tempo, this could be a dead giveaway. If not, I'll drop another clue later...

I'll now complete the previously-uncompleted lines that I posted earlier:

Put on a little make-up, make-up,
Make sure they get your good side, good side
