Nice one Plummy! I was trying to give a clue that wasn't too obvious, I found it very difficult.

Searched for this song on this thread and was surprised it hadn't been used (unless I missed it)

Re: Name that tune
I see what your thinking is - but Rocket Man's lyrics are:
She packed my bags last night pre-flight
Zero hour nine AM
So, not correct this time Paul
First clues - early 80's- HUGE hit, still being played all the time on the radio

Ah - looks like I got on the wrong flight
This one was bugging me so I had to Google it - should have known this one as I saw the band when they toured SA

Agreed - everyone MUST know this song. In fact as alluded to, it was played on the radio I was listening to this afternoon.

Re: Name that tune
I think you are correct, Zoot. I came up with "Kansas"!
Anyway, the song is either "Africa", or something with Africa and a few more words.

Re: Name that tune
If it is 'Africa' (and it mus be, as their only really big hit in the UK. They also had 'Hold the line', but that was a minor hit), then it's amazing how for such a big song I/we can't place the lyric.

Re: Name that tune
It is Africa. I was beginning to doubt the lyrics myself with no one getting it: First 4 lines are:
I hear the drums echoing tonight (this would have been too much of a giveaway)
But she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation
She's coming in, 12:30 flight
The moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards salvation
All yours Peter...

Re: Name that tune
Here is an extract taken from an article in today’s Times:
“ Public health experts examined the effect on motorists and found that they drove faster and more erratically when listening to higher tempo tunes. Songs with more than 120 beats per minute were particularly risky. "
" Listening to light music, with a tempo below 80 beats per minute, was comparable to driving in silence because the slight distracting effect was offset by the soothing nature of the sounds. “
Dangerous driving songs:
1. American Idiot ( Green Day and at 189 beats per minute, the most dangerous )
2. Party In The USA ( Miley Cyrus )
3. Mr Brightside ( The Killers )
4. Don't Let me Down ( The Chainsmokers )
5. Born To Run ( Bruce Springsteen )
Safe driving songs:
1. Stairway To Heaven ( Led Zeppelin and at 63 beats per minute, the safest )
2. Under The Bridge ( Red Hot Chilli Peppers )
3. God’s Plan ( Drake )
4. Africa ( Toto )
5. Location ( Khalid )

My father used to sing this song. It's Down by the Salley Gardens.

Very good, Paul!Paul Victory wrote: ↑Fri Sep 20, 2019 12:45 pm My father used to sing this song. It's Down by the Salley Gardens.
Written by W.B. Yeats in 1889, shows up on many CDs of traditional Irish music. (I think I've got 5 or 6 copies in my collection.)
Down by the salley gardens my love and I did meet;
She passed the salley gardens with little snow-white feet.
She bid me take love easy, as the leaves grow on the tree;
But I, being young and foolish, with her would not agree.
In a field by the river my love and I did stand,
And on my leaning shoulder she laid her snow-white hand.
She bid me take life easy, as the grass grows on the weirs;
But I was young and foolish, and now am full of tears.
It has been covered by John McCormack, Kenneth McKellar, Marianne Faithfull, Andy Irvine, Clannad, James Galway, The Rankin Family, Maura O'Connell, the Cambridge Singers, Tangerine Dream, Emma Thompson, and Steve Forbert to name a few.
I confess that I had you in mind when I picked it.
Over to you, Paul!

"Rocket Man"?
Never heard of the previous song, and of the names mentioned, the only ones I know are Marianne Faithfull, James Galway, and Paul Victory! I lead a sheltered life here in the colonies.

Re: Name that tune
We have been traveling a lot for vacation ("holidays"), but sitting in the Albany airport at 5 AM now is tough. That is what made me think of this song.
