Meta-nonathlon 2019/2020

Post by Rodger »

With the 19/20 rowing season almost two and a half months underway, it's time to start up a new meta-nonathlon. What is the meta-nonathlon and what has changed? Here's a quick summary.

What is the Free Spirits meta-nonathlon?
The meta-nonathlon is a motivational tool, based on the nonathlon of two consecutive seasons. The meta-nonathlon compares your current nonathlon scores with those of your previous season. In essence, you are competing against your former self. The scores are sorted into a Free Spirits meta-nonathlon ranking that shows who is doing the best job of improving on last year.

How does it work?
For every nonathlon distance (500m, 1k, 2k, etc.) and timed piece (30 min, 60 min) your 2020 nonathlon score will be divided by your 2019 score. The outcome is then multiplied by 100, giving a percentage as your score for that distance. So, managing a better score on a piece than in the previous season gives you a score over 100. The scores are rounded off to whole numbers, for easy-view purposes (showing decimals makes the sheet look messy). Just like in the nonathlon itself, the total score is calculated as the sum of the nine best individual scores (out of all 10). There is no bonus for doing all 10 distances.
All scores in the table are rounded off. The sum score in the table is the sum of the actual (ie. not rounded off) scores. This means that the sum score you see in the table can be 1 point higher or lower than the score you would get if you added up all the rounded off scores.

What do the colours mean?
The cells are colour coded:
- Dark green: over 2.5% better than last season (big improvement)
- Light green: less than 2.5% better than last season (modest improvement)
- Yellow: exactly the same as last season
- Orange: less than 2.5% worse than last season (small decline)
- Red: over 2.5% worse than last season (large decline).
Because scores are rounded off, cells with a score of 100 can be either yellow, orange or light green.

What if you didn't row all distances last year?
If you haven't entered a time/distance for a piece in the previous season, the score to beat will be equal to your highest score in that previous year. In my case, I didn't do a FM in the 2019 season. If I decide to do one in 2019/2020, the 2019 benchmark is set at 818, which was my highest score of all pieces in 2018 (for my 1k). There is a threshold of 5 ranked pieces though, so If you entered less than 5 nonathlon scores in the previous season, the benchmark for un-entered pieces will be set at 1000 instead of your highest ranked score.

What if you weren’t in the nonathlon last year?
The point of the meta-nonathlon is to compare your current season to your previous, based on nonathlon scores. If you didn’t enter any nonathlon scores last year, there is nothing to compare your current performance with. You will have to wait until next season to find your name in the table (sorry!).

What do you have to do to take part?
Here is a change from last year. In previous years your name needed to be listed on the nonathlon Free Spirits filter list that is managed by Stan. From this year on, this is no longer needed as I will keep a separate (private) filter list on the nonathlon website.

There are three requisites to take part in the meta-nonathlon:
1. you're currently a member of Free Spirits;
2. you registered at least one score on the nonathlon website last season;
3. you registered at least one score on the nonathlon website this season.

The first table, that will be posted shortly, consists of 19 participants that I have found fulfilling the aforementioned three requisites. If your name is not on the list and you want to take part: let me know by posting in this thread. Same if you want to remove your name from the meta-nonathlon. You can also send me a private message if you prefer.

When are the scores updated?
I will post new tables regularly, at least once every two weeks. I haven't decided yet on a fixed scheme. Suggestions are welcome.

Keep rowing more, better or harder!

Many thanks for running this again Roger. It's always good to see that colourful table appear to see how progress is going.

Rowing wise, last season was very poor for me. Not sure how things will go this season, but I'll need a few steady months racking up some km before I see some improvements. It would be nice to get rid of those reds! :D

Cheers, Gregor.

Well, you're not the only one with those pesky reds (predominantly).
Is going to be a long wait at the traffic lights to see them all turn green.

Looks like Torquemada (Pepe, I believe) and SandbaggerOne had a decent start to the season though!

There is not much activity, it makes sense to adjust the number of updates accordingly.

Thanks as ever Rodger.

This could be interesting this year as I am doing all distances (apart from 500m) at R19 in a vain attempt to improve technique and strength.

The bar has been set high already by Torquemada! =D>

Seeing you're scoring 98's and 99's on middle distances already there is clearly a lot more to come.

My times/distances all are better than last season (as far as I did them in 18/19), apart from the 10k. They are red because I'm registered as a hwt on the nonathlon site now. Hopefully later in the season I will redo them all as lwt and make em all green. Just hovering around 75 kg at the moment, weighing first thing in the mornings, so just that bit heavier when stepping on the rower.

Thanks Rodger. After following training plans for most of the year I'm looking forward to enjoying myself in the weeks following SRIC with a bit of festive Nonathlon fun. My aim is to complete all the distances (excluding FM) and post total scores of 900+ for the Meta-nonathlon and 8,100+ for the nonathlon .

Many thanks Rodger. I also aim to get some Nonathlon points over the Christmas break. If I get a 1K and HM under my belt I should climb a fair bit up the table. [-o<

Thanks Rodger for the update, it's like a little early christmas present for me finally entering the top 10 in this table :D But I can feel Dave breathing down my neck, so there's work to do I'm afraid...

Time to fill in those blanks I think. 1k done today with an astonishingly bad deterioration in rate by 11 seconds over the 1k. Started at 1:40 and finished at 1:51. Talk about fly and die! But the points are in the bank, now time to focus on that HM. Hoping for top-5 by the new year.

Thanks as ever Rodger.

Well, the HM today now gives me a full set of scores. It was a very painful affair. I thought I was on for a PB until the last 7K and then my legs just went away from me . I struggled on to get sub-90 minutes which is around 1 minutes faster than last year's score. As an added bonus I calculated backwards to get an improved hour-of-power score. Looks like that is the obvious target for further improvement!

I see much hard rowing has been done over the last couple of weeks (not by me). A new update seems in order.

Thanks Roger, you picked the perfect time for an update :D. It would be nice to be all green by the end of the season but not sure how long I will be able to hold 2nd place. If Colin fills in the blanks he will rocket straight to the top and there's no chance of me catching Philip. So it looks like a race for third. A decent HM from Felton and he'll be hard to catch. Also Jon has a lot of 102's and it will be interesting to see what he has in the tank after last year's stellar performance. Anyway plenty of time for things to change before May.
