Ahhh thought Peter S might get this, being a sailor!

Older song. Van Morrison.

At least you did not say that I might get it, being older!

Into the misty? I never really knew or understood the lyrics.

We are sailors, but the Captain of our cruise ship is in command. We are presently at anchor off Norfolk Island in the South Pacific. It is 7:30 am Thursday and conditions are too rough to tender to shore.

Wow! Trip sounds amazing. And your guess is close enough for me, the title is Into the Mystic.

Had forgotten that song until there was a story on NPR about foghorns, and they played it to close out.

Your turn, weather permitting!

Thanks Barbara. Close is also good enough in horseshoes and hand granades!

We are sailing South for two days, bound for Milford Sound. It is getting cooler since we are sailing South

Old, old song. Following a theme you suggested.

"The one you shouldn't hurt at all."

My mistake. I apologize. It must be the time zone changes.

I misremembered Clarence Henry as "Foghorn", rather than "Frogman". Therefore, my song does not follow the (foghorn) theme, and "You Always Hurt The One You Love" is unlikely to be identified.

An easier one:

"Like a ghost from a wishing well"

For some reason my mind is now showing me Paul Rogers singing that line, so Free or Bad Company perhaps (the word 'ghost' doesn't sit well though)...
I'll guess at the eponymous "Bad Company" ?

You guys are tough. You want the actual lyrics! Okay, a bit more, with the correct word.

"Just like an old time movie, about a ghost from a wishing well."

I did not know that - and therefore I stand corrected (although actually I'm sitting at the moment to be completely pedantic   )

Here I am in Wellington NZ reading about English pendants.

If you could read my mind, what a tale my thoughts could tell!

At least you both know it is not Bad Company.

I do not want to use cruise ship minutes to see if I have previously used this Canadian singer, and if no one knew then either. #-o

Is that another line? - as I know that line as the opening line of a classic - but for the life if me can't come up with the darned title

This one is driving me mad!!
The song has exactly the same tune as Elvis Costello's "Olivers Army" but it is not that.

Is it something by Glen Campbell?

The one I'm thinking of is nothing like Oliver's Army and much more a slow ballad...it's a teaser though

Yep, I recognise it too. I think I can help with the performer ... Gordon Gilltrap. I have no idea of the song title though #-o (I've just typed that and thought "isn't it 'gonna write a classic'"?, so you could be being double cryptic there Plummy!).
My head is spinning now...

I'm going to add to the confusion. Isn't the song called If You Could Read My Mind? The version I remember is by Gordon Lightfoot.

That sounds right. I knew it wasn't Gordon Giltrap as he was an acoustic guitarist (one hit wonder with Heartsong - the theme from the BBC Holiday TV series). I actually saw him in concert twice in the late 70's and actually have his autograph (hardly worth much on the open market though)

Good job Jill, title and artist (and I believe, songwriter).

Now to get ready for a wine tour in Napier.

I am still confused. To begin with, although this sounded familiar, I couldn't think of the song either.

I only had my moment of enlightenment after reading the above - I assumed that Peter was giving the answer so that he could have another go. #-o  I cannot claim to be the winner.

Confused of Doncaster.
