Having recovered from my rib injury, I thought I was returning to form and did semi decent half hour and half marathon rows earlier this month. On Saturday, I decided to do a 500m TT, which went reasonably OK - I matched last season's SB. But my lower back was quite sore on Sunday, so I did a gentle 35 minutes at DF 120 (compared to my usual 130 to 135). On Monday, my back was no better, so I took the next two days off.

Being near month end, I would like to have another go at this month's CTC, but my warm up today did not go particularly well and I bailed after the warm up, without doing the CTC. My lower back is definitely sending me signals at present and I may need to take an extended break from erging.

What's really annoying is the fact that last week I saw the specialist who gave me the two lumbar injections I had to try to resolve my earlier back pain problems. I told him my back seemed to be holding up fine and we agreed that nothing further needed to be done at this stage. Then I go and injure my back two days later! #-o  #-o

Hi Paul

Not quite sure what the problem is this time. I had some impingement between two of my vertebrae, which the injections targeted with limited success. My weight loss over the past few months may have led to a general improvement, but I've had moderate to severe pain across my lower back since I did the 500m TT last Saturday. Not sure it was the 500m that caused, but that seems to be the most likely cause.

In recent months, I've generally had some back pain in the mornings from time to time, but it usually cleared up after I'd walked around a bit. It's now nearly five in the afternoon and my back is still bothering me, so I think my next step may be another series of visits to the physio.

I decided to be sensible and not go near the erg today. I know I would be tempted to have another go at the CTC if I did, sore back notwithstanding!

Could be a prolapsed disc or something like that.
Regardless, you need to curb your enthusiasm a bit- back injuries are not to be messed with

Lower back still acting up and my right shoulder is now a bit sore, so I haven't been on the erg since I did the CTC 10k on Saturday. I'll possibly do a gentle 'just row' this afternoon or tomorrow just to see if that makes things better or worse. I think that full on sessions and sprinting are probably a bad idea right now.

My trajectory has changed from rowing a bit to ... not at all for a while.
Left foot pain started about 2-3 weeks ago, and I finally made myself go for a work up. A fifth metatarsal bone stress fracture was found  . Will hear next week if wearing the boot is all I need to do or if surgery is indicated. I guess our ski erg will get more attention.

Has anyone here erged with that kind of fracture and how did you fare?

Coming at this from the other side--I've had to take a break from yoga and strength training because I strained my shoulders, but I can still row. Apparently I reactivated the shoulder impingement syndrome and strained the muscles in my rotator cuff, particularly the biceps tendons. It's that kind of injury that creeps up, little by little, until suddenly it's disrupting one's sleep. I had a great routine going: hot yoga, inline skating, rowing, and the 7-minute workout. I suspect my form wasn't the best when using my shoulders (yoga flows and push-uppy & planky things in the 7-minute workout).

As long as I take it easy on the last part of the drive, rowing seems to be therapeutic. Freezer packs after rowing on both shoulders and the right knee (an old injury) seem to help a lot.... and I found the physical therapy exercises for the shoulders (and pulled some new ones off YouTube), but the recovery is taking such a long time. Is that because I'm old-ish, or are shoulders just like that? OT, but when does one get to claim "being old" these days?

Thanks,
John B.

John - 53yo with no answers, but similar complaints. I finished up the Dog Days of Summer challenge with somewhere around 135k meters in August which is a new monthly distance best for me. However, I noticed - as you mentioned - that my lower back was getting a little niggly bit by bit, and when I did my last row of the challenge on Tues 8/28, I knew afterwards that I needed to back off on the rower. I've retained strength training for now as I refuse to go quietly to mush again. So far, the back feels better, but not great. Was thinking of trying a light row today, but will probably put the labor off to tomorrow being "Labor" Day and all... :)

This is pretty frustrating. Felt like I was ramping up my fitness pretty nicely.

Sorry about the back & shoulder woes Ron & John.

Boris I incurred an avulsion fracture, not the same as yours. But a rowing friend of mine did fracture her 5th metatarsal on a similar fall. She got back to rowing after recovery time, but one side effect she had was that she overcompensated for the injury and ended up needing an outpatient hip repair procedure. I guess the lesson is be aware what your body is having to do to support the injured area. Best wishes.

Still on my 5th Metatarsal fracture.
Nice callus formed and was not displaced. Orthopedic surgeon said I can be more active a couple weeks ago and I managed to refracture whilst walking around at work. Today a screw and non weight bearing for several weeks. Got myself a Xmas present!

My knee has kept me off rowing most of this year. Yesterday I planned to get back at it but ended up hurting my shoulder at work.

That's a run of bad luck you're having there Jolo :-( Maybe the shoulder injury could be viewed as a blessing as it'll give your knee a bit longer to recover (maybe clutching at straws there a bit). Hopefully you'll be back at it very soon.

Re Paul Victory saying "Here I am again on this thread". Here I am again on this thread.
I spent 2 years working my way back up the ranking board (not too far up, but improving, after my heart by pass op, then comes my total hip replacement.
Luckily, I found a surgeon willing to give a fairly high tech double mobility replacement to enable me to return to my beloved rowing.
Had the op on 30th July, did rehab for about five weeks and have now returned to the usual gym. How quickly we lose fitness! On Monday (my first rowing day back) I did a 2K row at what felt to me at snails pace.
Today I managed 4K at a faster snails pace. But at the moment that doesn't matter. What does matter is that Joy of Joy I CAN STILL ROW!!!!!!!!
I am hoping in the long run, to retrieve some decent times, but more importantly, row a marathon. Something I have wanted to do for some time.

Thanks Wolfie and Plummy. Yes I will take it easy. I have experience of biding my time and working up to fitness during my rehab after my heart op.
So I guess its here we go again. Never the less, I am enjoying my rowing again, which is the main thing.

Now for some really good news. Today I managed my first 10K row since my hip operation.
The hip is going great and doesn't present me with any problems when rowing. Weight bearing when walking however, is a different matter.. Not the hip but muscles not use to walking in a straight manner after walking for 2 years with my toe pointing outwards. The loss of fitness, due to the op and time out is gradually being addressed, although I won't break any records just yet. I have, however, set my sights on a marathon. I think that I would like to do it for charity, probably my local hospital, since they have helped me overcome both cancer, heart and hip problems I realise that it is a daunting task, but I will take my time to train thoroughly.
The joy of being able to row after all of this is wonderful and I am a lucky man!!!

Some of you have noticed my absence from the metre board for a few months and today was a first attempt at some sort of return. I was diagnosed with something called an inguinal hernia last Autumn and advised to avoid lifting heavy weights which I guessed included rowing. Yesterday I saw a senior surgeon who very clearly stated that I do not have an inguinal hernia but a tear in the fatty material in roughly the same part of the body. Apparently the ultrasound signature is very similar. He gave me the all-clear to get back to what I have done so much of i.e. erging and it felt great to get back on the machine this morning. The times were awful but I don't care....... Hopefully, I can stay on the metre board now!

Regards to all

I've succumbed to a troublesome right hand side strain, the same location as what was probably a stress fracture a few months back. Nothing like the level of pain, but it's going to get I way of march madness and this months ctc in all likelihood.

Be careful Ian, I have gone through this cycle several times in my life, including a fracture in November '18. Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!
