May ctc - 1k / 3'r / 992m, standing starts

Post by Grobi »

Hi all,

team Olimpic Barcelona have set the May ctc in honour of the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona:

"TRIBUTE TO BARCELONA 1992 OLIMPICS

Row 1000m rest 3min + row 992m standing starts

Record your total time for the 1992m"

At first sight it looks short and easy. Having said that, two 1ks within three minutes might not be that much fun at all😱
Athletes row, others just play games

I think you have summed it up pretty well! In terms of pacing my best 1k time is 4s slower than my 2k so should the aim be to hit the mid point?

Max, I think that would be a good target pace to begin with. You can still go quicker in the numerous following attempts (because it‘s so much fun :D ).

well, shock horror, I hate to tell you, but this is all about the pacing :-)
Don't over do the first 1k, or you will suffer on the 2nd.
But also don't hold back on the first 1k, or you will have too much left in the tank ;-)
(I would like to audition for Captain Obvious for their next round of adverts)
7:10.0 @ 1:47.9 ... but that does not tell the whole story

Three minutes is a lot of rest. I guess if did the 1k all out, could do the second rep at 6 sec slower pace. So, maybe do the 1k at 1k+2. :-k

I did the first interval at fairly full on pace (0.9 seconds faster than last season's SB) and I thought I might have overlooked it. Have way through the second interval, I thought I might have been too conservative during the first interval, then the wheels fell off and only a kamikaze last few strokes got me close to the pace I did for the first interval. Overall time was 7:07.7 and splits were as follows:

1000 3:34.4 1:47.2 36
992 3:33.3 1:47.5 37

1992 7:07.7 1:47.3 36
M 68 6'1" 124kg (May05), 92kg (Feb06), 122kg (Aug10), 95kg (Sep11), 117kg (Jun13), now 98kg

Thanks to Plummy for posting first, I had a vague starting point:

3:39.3 1:49.6
3:36.0 1:48.8

Very much agree that this is all about pacing. I had a bit left in the tank, but I can't help feeling that if I'd pushed the 1km more I'd have been in a right state mid 992.

This ctc seems to be popular within Free Spirits, quite a good attendance of the team with only four days into the challenge. Well done everyone who has entered a score so far :fswink:

I had the pleasure of my first go yesterday.I wasn't feeling completely well and my focus is on otw rowing at the moment with the weather finally getting warmer. Anyway, what has to be done has to be done :D

First rep was almost full on, the second rep of course was. Maybe I can find a couple of seconds in the first rep, but overall this was quite exhausting, so not really looking forward to having a second go

What an eejit! (One of my favourite Scottish words, English translation idiot, German dummkopf.) I don't know if I should   or  .

It's not just the pacing of the 2 sessions it's the pacing within each one. Went out way too fast and ended the 1k at 1.40.8 (1s above my 1k PB pace!). Half way through the 992m also at 1.40.8 I crashed and stopped. Which was stupid because even if I had limped home the time would have been ok. But it gets worse... I thought I'd try again at a more sensible pace just to log a time. So I started to row the session again but it wasn't until the 992m showed about half that amount that I realised when you 'Re Row' the monitor takes what you actually rowed not what you originally keyed! Bit of a school boy error there #-o. So my third attempt was:

1992m 6:52.7 @1.43.5
1000m 3:29.5 @1:44.7
992m 3:23.2 @1.42.4

Think I might need to try it again later in the month.

Yes, very good effort Max (and thanks for the smiles with the aborted efforts  )
2nd go for me.
Thought I could squeeze out a little more pace on the first 1k, and therefor target Paul V just ahead.
Tried for 1:47.0
Achieved 1:46.9 and just about held on for 1:45.9 on the 2nd leg. Which hurt.
total 7:04.3 / 1:46.5
So met the target on Paul's back, and even, surprisingly, popped ahead of Peter for a short while ...

Was not going to row today after weights but decided to throw my hat in the ring. :) I noticed this thread a few days ago and wondered were i would be, because not done a ctc for about 2 years.

1992m...6:38.4...1:40...r26

1k was all over the place with pace, it was like breathing through a straw. 3:20.8...1:40.4...r26
992m was a lot better after the 3min rest. Dont really rest for more that 1min and felt strange just sat there in the gym. 1:39.6...r27

Might go again next week some time.

Wolfie, You are welcome. This week I've also managed to row a 30m session without washing suntan lotion off my face first. is not a good look .

May ctc - 1k / 3'r / 992m, standing starts

Post by Tako »

Wow, boat 1 is completely out of reach for me now so the best I could do was to try to defend my spot in boat 2. In order to so I had to improve my time to move up 2 spots as Erik and Morten will most likely end up in front of me and there are probably others as well

So aimed at the gents in front of me and managed to sneak in in front of them
6:51.2 @1:43.2
Now I am cooked as it is pretty hot here today: sunny and 25degC

Might not be enough for a spot in boat 2 at the end, but at least I tried

Claudius, That certainly is fast, well done ^O^ ^O^ ^O^

Tako, Yes it looks like boat 1 has rowed over the horizon for me as well. And great point about boat 2. I'm planning another go later this week and another in the final week because it links with my aim to get better at 1kms.

Managed to bump Mr Bee out of boat one (until he has another go). Not sure I fancy another go at this as this attempt hurt!

7:13.0 - 32 spm on each effort and the second rep was a fraction slower pace than the first so I think I was "all in" and nothing left.

1st go today, targeted rough pace of boat 2 and happy with the result despite being annoyingly 0.1s behind Tako ☹️

Welcome back Felton. Now I am pretty sure that boat 2 is probably not realistic for me at the end of the month, but let’s see

Not at all pretty, more so because it was at my gym. Sorry to anyone that witnessed this:

3:35.6 1:47.8
3:34.9 1:48.3

..for a total of 7.10.5.

I honestly can't see myself doing any better....

Ahem, you did know that I couldn't leave this unreplied, didn't you? :D Although I have to say that yours was a very fine effort and it took me several tries before I could answer it properly  which happened last night:

It was a fine balance in the first rep between overdoing it and keeping my powder dry for the second rep. I managed to be a tad quicker in rep #1 but that wasn't enough to beat Steve's time. So I had to be significantly faster in the second rep which I managed, but it was tough. Anyway, over to you Steve 8)
