Sourcing a second hand erg...

Post by Ian Bee »

Having witnessed another cracked seat roller (amongst other oddities) on my poor suffering waterrower with barely 1.8 million on the clock, I'm on the knife edge of admitting defeat and buying a concept 2.

What I'd like to do is pick up a second hand erg (at this stage model C PM3 up unless anyone advises otherwise). Googling in the UK provides a wealth of ebay options, in addition to a number of firms who advertise refurbished units - the latter appeals. I'd be grateful for any shared knowledge on such companies (whether as reply to this post or private message).

In the US, after erg competitions you can sometimes pick up a machine after the event, at a discount. They tend to have high meterage, but also a good chance of having been maintained by people who know them fairly well. Unlike the gym, for example, where you would not want a used erg because it'll have been treated poorly. Just thoughts. Good luck!

I would imagine the price for a privately sold one would be better than one that has been refurbed but of course that comes with the worry of "sold as seen" versus having some sort of comeback if it is bought from a business and has issues (same as buying a car really). I'd see if there are any private sellers locally first so you can go, see and try before you buy.
Another option would be to go on one of the FB sites (Fitness Matter, C2 Logbook) and just ask if anyone is selling one. You'll mostly likely get an well looked after machine from an honest seller there.

I recently bought a machine (Mod D) on fleabay.

You can use the PM3/4 monitor to check how many lifetime metres the monitor at least has recorded. And of course if the machine and monitor have been always together...

My previous machine was good for more than 6m metres and I sold it in pretty much the same shape as I bought it.

My new one has done less than 700k and I'm hoping therefore that it will be good for my expected metreage over the next 10 years.

I would always buy a machine from a private sale because having seen the way that gym staff treat (or not) their machines, I have no faith that they will last long.
