BRIC 2017
Hi everyone,
it's the 2017 British Rowing Indoor Championships the coming Saturday (Dec 9th). I spotted Free Spirit Guy Blackburn has entered the 40-49 lwt competition. Let's keep our fingers crossed that he will be as successful as he was in the welsh and in the scottish championships where he won a Gold on both occasions.
It will also be interesting to see how Bradley Wiggins will score. He is a five time olympic gold medalist and eight time world champion in cycling who recently changed to rowing. He'll be starting in the Men's Open, so in a hwt category. I would have expected seeing him amongst the lightweights to be honest.
Entry list can be found here:

Time table can be found here:

Re: BRIC 2017
Interesting to read James Cracknell's prediction of 6-6.05 for Bradley Wiggins 2k time. I had predicted to myself based on nothing other than reputation that he wouldn't even turn up if it wasn't at least sub 6:10. Might revise my prediction and go for 5:55

Re: BRIC 2017
I see that he is aiming to bulk up to 100kg from his Tour de France weight of 69kg. That's a hell of a change in physique. I'd say his performance will be the main point of interest at this year's championship. Makes me kind of sorry I can't be there to see it.

He shouldn't have a problem bulking up - he will just change from EPO to HGH .Paul Victory wrote: ↑Fri Dec 08, 2017 5:07 pm I see that he is aiming to bulk up to 100kg from his Tour de France weight of 69kg. I think you're something of a skeptic, Paul. I still (somewhat reluctantly) believe in innocent until proven guilty. Then again, I used to think (maybe hope would be a more accurate word) that Lance Armstrong was clean.paulgould wrote: ↑Fri Dec 08, 2017 5:53 pmHe shouldn't have a problem bulking up - he will just change from EPO to HGH .Paul Victory wrote: ↑Fri Dec 08, 2017 5:07 pm I see that he is aiming to bulk up to 100kg from his Tour de France weight of 69kg. Hi Paul
I would like to believe he is innocent as I love the cycling and hate to see the way the sport has been tainted, but he has been found to have taken PEDs 3 times under the guise of Therapeutic Use Exemptions.
In my eyes, knowingly taking PEDS is cheating - you can,t cut the pill in half, take the half that treats asthma, and leave the performance enhancing half.

Re: BRIC 2017
It's a difficult one. I haven't followed Wiggins' career that closely, but I presume the times he took the drugs were during training, rather than on the day of a race itself. It does seem like a bit of a 'get out of jail free' card, but if it's medically justified, I can also see how they might allow a TUE.paulgould wrote: ↑Sat Dec 09, 2017 7:56 am Hi Paul

At the end of the day, he's followed the rules, even if those rules may give him an unfair advantage. Should he be prevented from competing because he has asthma? Or do you believe that he doesn't really suffer from asthma all that much and that he's taking advantage of a loophole that allows him to cheat?

Re: BRIC 2017
Interesting one - as far as I know(and I haven't followed it that closely either) , the incidents happened at or around the TdF.Paul Victory wrote: ↑Sat Dec 09, 2017 1:05 pmIt's a difficult one. To me, it is black and white - Did he knowingly take performance enhancing drugs ? - Yes
He should certainly be allowed to compete if he has asthma - what I have an issue with is that allowances have been made for his "condition" - if his asthma was bad enough to require medical intervention via TUE's then he would not have ever reached the top in an endurance sport like cycling.
Even with my most charitable interpretation I would say he is "not proven guilty" rather than "proven innocent" and in my eyes, they are not the same by a long chalk.
As far as his erging career goes, I don't think he has the right physiology to compete with the top guys at 2k - he has a massive engine but is lacking in upper body strength - I think he would do an exceptional "hour of power" but lacks the raw, natural power to be really good at 2k.
He is very much a "Marmite" character and will always divide opinion.
Anyway, more importantly, massive congratulations to Guy and Morten on their excellent performances at the champs .

Thanks for the kind words Tako and Paul. I was very surprised when I saw my name on the third place in the display. But I think I played my cards well by not start to fast and save the juice for a good finish.

Re: BRIC 2017
Brilliant efforts Guy and Morton, that really is very special to medal
As for Wiggins, I was impressed with his 6:22 as it clearly was not an all out effort. As an Olympic champion he's obviously a supreme athlete, but at 38 its still quite a challenge to change to a sport where he does not have the ideal build.

Re: BRIC 2017
Thanks for the kind messages & hearty congratulations to Morten - very well raced.
Bit disappointed to be over 10 seconds slower in the 2k than at the Welsh but for whatever reason the warm atmosphere in the velodrome got to me & I had to back off at halfway - the 500m splits tell the story: ( 1:41.8 / 1:42.0 / 1:43.4 / 1:43.3 ). I was slightly ahead of John Steventon coming into the final sprint but with 200m to go I saw him drop the hammer & just could not respond.
Still, well made up with the 500m result
