Re: Tour d' Estonie

Tapering week!

Since beginning of April I started building long distance stamina to get a FM in at the last weekend of of last season, and did an early FM for this season at the beginning of May.
From there I put in a lot of 1h and HM rows with steadily increasing DF (170-195) to prep for TdE.

While my times a very dependent on "form on the day", I thinking about putting my strong HM and FM times in the pace predictor and 3s to the pace for each leg of the tour.
DF will go down from 195 to 150 for ~30k rows (that's the drag I uses for the FM), 160 for ~20ks and 170 for ~10k rows.

Do you think 3s slower then SBs is to fast for a tour like this, which has very little recovery days?

regards
Ralf

Very hard to know how you should pace this Ralf. The only thing I can think of that's anyway comparable that was done by some of our team mates is the Crazy Bear challenge, although that's more about completing the challenge than doing it quickly.

Maybe of some of them might have an insight into pacing.

The distances are very significant on this challenge but not impossible. Having seen the list, it's not the distances but the time that is needed and the fact that there are next to no breaks. I only train on back to back days at weekend now so there's no way I'd be able to join in as a soloist entrant.

Good luck to anyone who does though - that's a tough challenge

It startet!
The predictor gave me a 1:56.6 (+3s).

I helped moving our boat-house in the morning and was happy that we finished way quicker than announced.

Felt good at the start and had to step on the breaks, but ended with 1s faster than target pace, still. I will see if that will bite me in the end.

2nd row of 21:
Reduced the SB+3s to a SB+2s in the pace predictor, that hurt a bit but was still doable.

3rd:
Same method for pace prediction, HM SB+2 as 1st point, result of the 1st day (26.2k) of the tour as 2nd point.
It was doable but I have to slow down.

Thank you Caratacus :)

Today I rowed in the gym and therefore allowed me a predicted pace (from days 1 and 4) + 1s, did it 0.2 faster again.

Actually I thought to do it slower and use up some of my lead on place 5, but the 1st half was really easy and in the end I dragged it home. No need to give a away advantage.

The theme is repeating now, the start feels easy, the third third is painful but manageable. I guess that's how it should be.

My 60' SB is worse than the HM, so 20.3k is a bit out of the predictor range.

DF 160
That pace is 1.2s slower then the HM SB. That should give the predictor the right slope for the shorter pieces. (I hope)

RESTDAY!!!

Thoughts about the TdE. Is it worth it or even fun? As hard as expected or worse?

As I wrote in the 1st post, I trained up to it and in the same time wanted to loose weight which is a bit risky. 8kg in 8 weeks isn't that much but if one loosed muscle instead of fat you obviously did it wrong.
I tried to avoid this by doing low Rate rows with high DF, 16k-HMs most of the time.

I pretty much nailed my Target-weight with the start of the TdE and switched diet to more carbs again, which I would have done even with the weight still not on spot.
So I was quite surprised that I lost another 1kg in the 1st days but now I'm got back 2kg (1kg overweight). I can live with that for the moment and will not go without carbs during the TdE

Fun? I like it, I check the meters I have to row, use the pace predictor with a bit of voodoo and go for it, while watching TV shows.
My back is holding up (my butt not so much), one day it was nagging but the now reduced DF is helping. I have to say it isn't as hard as I thought it would be. Maybe my target paces are to relaxed but it is the first time I do such an event and the worst would be if I run my self to ground and could not finish it.

Critics: I'm a bit unhappy with the organisation ITM, the 1st 3 days updates of the results came every morning, now we are missing parts of the table for 4 days. Which results in a bit blind flight, I guess I could calculate the result on my own checking all pictures but it is annoying.

Anyway, after this 1st week and half of the meters already done, I would still recommend the TdE for all the meter munchers.

Target pace was not easy to predict and I started to strong. In the end I had to take 2 or 3 sips while HD and ended with 0.7s slower pace than I wanted to achieve. Done and dusted!
