The January CTC will be our choice
It's very early, but why wait?
Apparently, Free Spirits are in line to chose the January 2017 CTC.
Forward planning, we can collect and discuss ideas in October, hold a vote (if necessary) in November and announce the challenge early in December.

My personal criteria for a good challenge are:
1. It doubles as a good workout.
2. Simple to program on the PM - no fancy stuff
3. Don't like rate restricted or other gimmicks
4. I like pacing challenges, i.e. intervals where you have to record the slowest one
5. Intervals are not very suitable for online rowing. Time based straight pieces are best for online rowing.
Here are a couple of ideas to consider. I will happily vote for any better ideas:
- A straight 5k, rate unrestricted, from a standing start
- A straight 30 minutes row, rate unrestricted, from a standing start - may be a nice one because it's a popular format on RowPro online rowing
- 8x5min/R1 - record slowest interval. All intervals from standing start. (Perhaps shorten this to 6x5min or 4x5min).

I agree. All are good choices.
But I'd like to see what next month brings before I vote. If it is a straight 5k, then I'd opt for the 8x5min... but if it's some weird interval thingy, then I'd go with the 30 min.

August 2015: 3 x 9 min / 3 min rest
October 2013: 3861 m (for Gaye McOnie)
July 2012: 6k
April 2011: 3 x 1k / 4 min rest
October 2009: 10k
August 2015: 3 x 9 min / 3 min rest

For me a good challenge is -
Something different !! – something that you don’t normally do that’s challenging, preferably one you can’t easily predict your position in the table. So many of these CTC's are middle distance intervals or strait rows.
So I like -
Restricted stroke rate - 18 spm would be fun.
Very long rows, this month’s one great ( but I would prefer longer one – (I don’t think that would be allowed))
or maybe very short (100M - ok so it would have to be intervals).
So how about something completely different the January ones – 111 Meters x 11 with 1 min. rest between, (and maybe with a twist - at an overall stroke rate of 21 or less )? Standing start naturally.

Now that the December CTC is announced (it's a pyramid of sprint intervals), I'm bumping this thread.
From previous discussions I gathered that many Free Spirits don't like rate restrictions, variable intervals or convoluted ideas.
I agree with Sander a good CTC should double up as a good workout. That way people may get inspired to have multiple goes instead of it being a waste of training time.
I wouldn't mind a straight 30 min. The only argument I have against it, is that it's a standard ranking piece and therefore doesn't add anything for those who do all ranking distances/pieces anyway.
If someone has a favorite training session, then perhaps that could be a interesting CTC?

If we decide to do a ranking piece, how about a 6k as it tends to be done less often than either 5k or 30 minutes and might present a better opportunity for people to set an SB?

6k and 30min sound both as great options to me, also as it looks like we are performing better as a team on the longer rows How else can I still be in boat I for the November CTC??

Very happy with either 6k or 30'.
I might even get afloat (ha ha) as those are the distances I'm focusing on to get fitter.
If we want to add the 'make it a bit weird' requirement in, too, how about 7102m?
Still the right sort of distance, and 2017 backwards?

Hi, Since January is prime prep time for indoor racing, I'd like to suggest that we consider one of the key race prep predictor workouts.
These are along the lines of 8x500, 6x750, 4x1000. To make it a bit different we could make it 4 by 4' with 4' rest. The Free Spirit cube.

Not as good as a 4x1000 on 5' rest. Since it is time based, it will be close to 2k pace if your 2k time is close to 8 minutes. If your 2k is a lot faster than that, you'd need to pace this 1 to 2 seconds slower.

I´d like the 4´cube as much as a straight 7102m or 2x17min, it should be a longer session as in December we only row 5min with 5min rest...

4x4' /r4' works very well for me in January time within season. Could see myself doing that multiple times. My other leaning would be a nonathlon ranking distance, since it's hard to squeeze in so many TT all late in the season while also doing CTC, even better if it's 5k or longer row. Hope something gets selected that everyone is reasonably pleased with.

I like the 4x4x4 thing. If we go for a ranking distance I would vote for the 30 min but any other one would be ok too. I also have difficulty squeezing in the ranking distances and CTC with the normal training sessions.

I like the 2k race prep and cube 4 as well From earlier suggestions and votes my impression is that the majority of FSs would like a longer, single distance, though...

I've been off the forums (and the erg) for a while now, concentrating on my rugby refereeing and fitness required for that. So my 'vote' carries less weight than the stalwarts. I like CTCs to be a bit different instead of just a single time or distance, so I would vote for the 4x4x4 personally.
