BRIC 2019 - Dec 7th
Hi, has anyone entered BRIC this year?
Or is anyone local going to pop in to spectate?
My friend James Hayter has entered the mens 40-49 hw (I think he's entered as independent, but I'm checking on that).
Sadly I can't make it, so if there any friendly faces around please let me know.

Hi Steve, Although I've entered for the last 3 years I'm not going this year. I hope James has a fantastic day because it really is an impressive set up.

Yes the results are in. Huge congratulations to Guy for winning bronze in the 500m . Plus 4th in the 2k. Just awesome!

Also well done to James and Chris Newberry. James posted a great time in his 2k of 6.35.4. I hope you thoroughly enjoyed your day. I can't see a time for Morten so I'm not sure if he had to withdraw.

Re: BRIC 2019 - Dec 7th
Thanks for the compliment Max! (Having typed out the underneath on my phone I realise it's a bit of a War and Peace job. I apologise and understand if no one actually bothers ro read it !!
I really need to do a race report for the SIRC before it becomes ancient history, but as I'm stuck on the last (delayed!) virgin train to Glasgow before they lose the franchise here's how my BRIC 2019 unfolded.
Preparation was somewhat compromised due to a fairly decent cold, meaning that I took a full week off after the SIRC, and really only did a few short sessions this past week with the idea of trying to recover some oomph in my legs. My first race (2k) was unusually late this year (12:50) so I was at the velodrome in plenty of time to check my weight which was fine (74.2kg) so I had a couple of cereal bars to pass the time before the official weigh in window.
Once I was all signed off I wandered upstairs and caught up with a few friendly faces. One of the great things about this sport is how friendly it is, across different teams, age groups, whatever. It's great to catch up, even with people who later on I'll be battling with as if my life depended on it.
Because of my poor prep, my 2k plan was to pace down to 1:45ish pace and race for position from there. In the event I was reasonably comfortable at 1:43ish so I held it there. I was in about 8th place once the start unfolded but I stuck to my plan in the hope that some of the guys in front of me would slow to a steadier middle 1k which seemed to be what happened and I drifted up to 4th. I could see Tim Male impressively hurtling off into the distance in 1st (as I'd expected) and although I couldn't see him, I expected that Keith Darby would be hot on his heels. What I could see was the guy on 3rd (Ed Watson) and he was almost imperceptibly pulling away from me, meter by painful meter. In retrospect I'd have needed to limit my losses in this 3rd quarter but I was nervous about gunning too hard and blowing up.
By the time I got to the final 500 Ed had a 17m lead on me and although I lit the afterburners that was just too big a lead and a Ed was able to respond well to my chase so that although I was closing, there was never any realistic prospect of s catch. All in all I'm happy with my time given my poor preparation but the competitive part of my brain is gutted that I couldn't make it into the medals.
The 500m was an altogether more rushed affair, scheduled only 90 minutes after the 2k. We also had a very truncated warm up, even by BRIC standards. Maybe only 4 minutes before we were assembled for racing. And then there was barely time to set the drag and footplate and we were off. Chatting afterwards at least 2 guys didn't have time to set their drag properly and weren't sure what they were to racing at.
As far as the race went it was much the same approach as the 2k for me. Drive down to 1:30/500m ish and then look at positions. I was able to push a bit under that and move up into 3rd but of course there's little scope to make up time in a 500. In the reverse of the 2k I'm a bit disappointed with my time, but pleased to sneak onto the podium.
Overall, still a great day. Not the results I was hoping for a couple of months ago but you have to say there are some brilliant ergers in the 40 lwts and they rowed well today.

Fantastic performances guys, I had to withdraw this year due to airline trouble (the airline rescheduled the flight from friday to saturday). I have refocused and will compete in Euro Open the 11th of January in Prague.

Great write up and results Guy. Still mighty impressive times despite the less than perfect run up to the races.

43Mm metres rowed. Re-setting the bar much lower now. Getting too old and brittle for this malarky

It certainly is, thank you. And Morten that must have been hugely frustrating. But at least you have Prauge to look forward to.

Thank you for the great write up Guy and congratulations on your results!
That's a bummer Morten that you couldn't race due to cancelled flights, very annoying! I hope the Euro Open will be more satisfying for you!

Re: BRIC 2019 - Dec 7th
That really is the pits by the airline, how do they think moving the actual day would work!
Congrats Guy, another podium!
James was pretty happy with his 6:35.4
I know he was aiming to beat 6:40, but I genuinely thought he could go under 6:35. Splits suggested he paced it very well and gave it his all though!

Re: BRIC 2019 - Dec 7th
Yes I was quite frustrated when I discovered 5 days before BRIC that the airline had changed the schedule without notifying us. When I was checking alternative airlines it was to late, the prices was skyhigh. I will be back next year In my opinion BRIC is the best indoor rowing competition during the year.
