Height / Weight and 2k performance

Hi,

Rowers often talk about the relationship between age, weight, height and rowing performance. Last winter I did an extensive analysis of how age effected rowing performance, but there is very little data on how weight and height effect things.

I would like to ask a favor of all you rowers out there. I have put together a very brief survey on survey monkey. It should take less than 5 minutes to complete, and it is completely anonymous. Would you please follow the included link at fill it out for me. Once I have a reasonable data set, I'll do the analysis and publish it for everyone.

Thanks
Greg

Hi Greg,

I filled it out for you, but maybe you need a question that asks how long they have been rowing for and how fit they think they are.
I have only been rowing 6months ish and most of that wasn't proper training. The times I did my 2K and 10K I would have thought I could beat those now by some margin as I am still in the phase of getting big gains fast.
So maybe my sort of information may not be useful as that isn't the best or close to the best I could be.

Hi Greg,

Filled in. Will be interesting to see the results. IIRC Philip 'won' last year. Suspect Guy will rank highly this time.

I am in a similar place to Swinny. Put in estimated times where I would expect to be for 2k & 10k as fitter now than when last done, but really expect to be 2-3S/500m faster by season end despite not training all out.

As well as the above, you might like to add an estimate of lean weight as there may be people with significant excess fat filling in. If I had completed 6 months ago I would have been much slower and 8% heavier! You might also like to expand to the C2 UK forum for a larger data sample and perhaps add to the main forum which gets more hits (or is this deliberate to reduce uncompetitive rowers completing, if the latter, you might like to say so as I should not have completed!).

Please would you add a link to the info on age as that would be very interesting. Thanks for doing this and look forward to seeing the results.

So far, I have 68 results. I appreciate the ideas for additional questions. I agree that this is a crude first step. I'll continue with refinements onc I get a first cut at the data. The biggest thing I want to see is the slope of the relationship between height and performance.

Filled in the survey for you, and look forward to reading your analysis.

I took a quick look at the results so far. I have about 150 responses.

Here's a quick plot of the 2k times versus height for just the male rowers.

Here it is for female rowers

I think for it to be meaningful, I will need about 10x more results. I have to break it down by age group to account for that effect.

By the way, no discernible trend relating weight to 2k times.

Here's the analysis...

https://analytics.rowsandall.com/2018/1 ... wers-tall/

Two conclusions:
1. The trend is clear that taller rowers are faster, a rule of thumb is a second off the split for every inch of height for men, closer to 1/2 sec for women.
2. There is huge variation from person to person at each height, so most people can overcome moderate height differences because of good training or physiology.

Many thanks for the results. By eye there is almost as much support for a much steeper decline for ladies (if more are categorised as outliers)!

The link also gives the articles from your age analyses that I found very interesting, although it would have been nice to have some take away statistics to employ rather than just the overall positions presented in graphs (in the same way that you presented the 1.25W/cm - women, 3.33W/cm men in the article above.

Interesting. If I was 10cm taller my 2k time would be an impressive 6:37. On the downside I'd probably bang my head a lot
