Starnberg 30 minutes 2018

Post by Grobi »

Hi all,

I'd like to inform you that a certain Mr. Plummy and I have decided to enter this year's 30 minute race at Starnberg, south of Munich, which will be held on February 17th. It is the german championships for this distance/time (www.ergoregatta.de)

Former race reports can be found here:

2011: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2025&hilit=starnberg
2012: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2330
2013: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2540&hilit=starnberg

I had a first test on Jan 2nd to see where I am after the christmas break: 7404m!
That is a whole 436m behind my SB, so I have a LOT of work to do in the coming five weeks!

Apart from that, any other takers from Free Spirits for this one?

I did a test yesterday after my CTC attempt on Saturday and knew at the start of my warm up that my legs were tired already and wouldn't be happy. Scraping over 7400 (neg. splits getting me to 7408m) was actually quite a result I thought. On fresh legs I think 7500+ ought (emphasis on "ought") to be do-able but who knows on the day (I may claim jet-lag on the day but that might be seen as clutching at straws!! ;-))

With my SB being 7590m I haven't got as much ground to make up as Peter though.

Seeing as this thread exists I thought I'd chuck my training on here. Yesterday I did a "push" but not flat out 30mins and managed 7473m (I'm taking anything over 7500 in the race as acceptable and 7600M would be a new SB!).

I've had to swap my training to Monday, Wednesday, Thursday for 6 weeks as I am now busy on Tuesday evenings back at college! so tonight wasn't on the freshest legs so I went for an OCD 10k

All 2k splits were 24 SPM though only 2 were exactly 8:20.0. 41.20.3 was the total time and to be honest it seemed to fly by concentrating on solely trying to keep the predicted finish as close to 41:20 as possible

Monday I managed a very painful 7561m - which I would take in the race to be honest as a "fair effort" but have to say it was tough and I had to back off for a couple of minutes somewhere 6~8 minutes from the end.

Tonight I fancied something slower but further, so plumped for a 60 minutes at a steady spm. Ended up with 3 x 24spm splits and 3 x 25 spm splits and managed to neg split it as well. Finished with 14571m which is my 3rd best of the season.

Not bad, but you call that slower? You managed two consecutive 30mins with 7285,5m each!

It was slower overall ( 2:03.5 ) instead of 1:59.0 overall. Applying "Paul's law" I should be able to scrape a bit more speed for a 30 minutes 8)

Race entries have been released today. Plummy is racing three other guys, I'm racing twelve guys, with Frank Klawonn (olympic gold in 1988) and Thoralf Peters (olympic silver in 1992) amongst them. At least four other guys in my race are also capable of +8k for 30 minutes (judging from their last year's score). That's gonna be fun...

Sorry for the late reply but it has been a really busy day. We arrvied at the venue later than anticipated because winter had returned with a lot of snowfall and difficult travel as a result.

The whole competition was well organised and run to the minute. They are playing loud music throughout the race and there are two big screens with the live race results, one behind the rowers, the other one across the room for the rowers to watch. The only problem I could spot was the dry and warm air.

Which leads me to my race report. My plan was to start out at 1:56 pace for the first ten, maybe twenty minutes, with the option to speed up after ten minutes, if I was feeling up to it. Then speed up further in the second to last five minutes and a strong final five minutes. I hoped to be finishing with a score higher than my last test before the race (7809m) or even better set a new SB (7840m). Well, I started like planned, but legs didn‘t feel right from the beginning. So I kept that 1:56 pace for 20 minutes, but there was absolutely no way of speeding up. With the second to last five minutes starting I was able to pull occasional 1:55s or 1:54s and in the final two minutes maybe a bit faster. But it wasn‘t good enough to better my latest 30 min test, let alone to set a new PB, as I finished with 7801m. So at first I was a bit disappointed, until I realised that I had finished 7th out of 16 in my category. That was higher than I had expected and the reason was that two of the „big guys“ had given up during the race. It seems they were also suffering from the dry and warm air.

Highlight of the day for me was a gentleman aged 71 who set a new world record in the 70-74 mhwt category in 8144m! =D> So the warm and dry air didn't bother him too much!

Driving back was a bit tiring because snowfall and traffic (end of school holiday) had increased and after a good bavarian dinner I am ready for a good night‘s sleep :fswink:

Peter, thank you for the very informative write - up, I trust that you were not kept awake due to an overloaded digestive system … :fswink:

Congratulations on your result, especially as your finishing place turned out to be higher than you were expecting. Who doesn’t enjoy a pleasant surprise. :)

Plummy, I hope that you have regained your equilibrium and no longer feel cross and disappointed with yourself. If it had happened to someone else, you would have had some words of commiseration for them and some words of wisdom. :)

It’s a pity there weren’t more entrants in your race who you felt evenly matched with. That might have fired you up more …

You both put in plenty of hard training in readiness for the event so thank you for having the courage to take part and represent Free Spirits. 8) =D> ^O^ :D

On reflection, although very disappointed that I didn't squeeze a new SB on Saturday my actual distance (7536m) is only 1% below below my SB for the current season so it was hardly a catastrophe. It was the fact I just never got going - and my only explanation could be that as the machines didn't have C Breezes fitted I may have set the drag 15~20 points too high as the PM was all in German and I had to guess. I rowed an 8k on Monday at 26 SPM (solid OCD style) in 32:32.0 ( 2:02.0 pace ) and although working quite hard wasn't in any distress where my 7536 @ 1:59.5 felt like near death.
I actually got on the podium and my certificate says "3rd" - bit of a typo cock-up there and a sympathy podium for the guy who travelled the furthest I think.

As a complete aside, I was surprised a couple of times by people who's first question to me was what I thought of "Brexit".
