Songs that make you pull harder and faster

Post by gregsmith01748 »

As some of you saw on the Pete Plan thread, I had one of those workouts where everything just worked out great. Part of it was that I lucked into a few songs that helped me out. In some cases it was that the beat was well timed to the 26 or 27 SPM that I was pulling, in other cases it was just that the song was awesome.

Here are the ones that got me cranked up yesterday were:
- AC/DC: Dirty Deeds
- Styx: Fooling yourself
- Skrillex: Bangarang

These are by no means my favorite songs, but they sure got the job done yesterday

On a related note. AC/DC Big Balls was a very good tempo for my cool down.

What songs makes intervals fly and not die for you?

Strangely I like calm music when I row. Private Investigations with Dire Straits is so cool and sounds fantastic. Great guitar. 8)

"Jambi" by Tool. "Du Hast" by Ramstein. "Enter Sandman" by Metallica. "Kill Everbody" by Skrillex. Driving bass tracks, not so great for calming the nerves but full of agression and power for sprinting.

Back in 2008 when I got under 7mins I did it to 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' by Propellorheads. There's a bit of a dip at the moment the doubt sets in, which is a bit frustrating, but plow through it and it go me through it.

My current one is 'Giorgio by Moroder' by Daft Punk. For a sub-7, start at 01:50 into the track (when he 'signs off' and the music starts proper and you'll flow quite nicely for a couple of minutes. Then when the pain hits it's already kicking it hard with the amazing live drumming section. The end kicks in at the 6.15 into your row (8.05 into the track), meaning 40 seconds of hammering it as hard as you can - or at least, not dropping any power.

Being a drummer, that last bit gives me all the energy I need to man up and hit it hard!

Longer rows for me seem to be mostly Van Halen and Foo Fighters.

If you want to row a 19:45 for a 6k, try this playlist.

http://www.rowingrelated.com/2013/11/wi ... dalys.html

It worked for will daly at the Oklahoma Speed Order event last week.

There's a lot of drum n bass, EDM, trance action here to mix with all you metal heads.

Perhaps in that line you should give Jochim Miller a listen along with the Donkey Rollers.

On a different tack, why not set up a candy floss pop playlist (Katie Perry, Lady Gaga, various "talent" show acts of little talent but big PR). I guarantee you'll go quicker just to make the music stop.

I'm not sure that I belong on this thread because of all the songs listed above, I've only ever owned, or can honestly say I recognise the Dire Straits and Pink Floyd ones. Yes, I've bought very little music since the 90's, but my kids are gradually improving my repertoire!

Almost all of my erging is done to radio podcasts, but occasionally I do need a bit of a boost - perhaps for some tough intervals, or a hard 5k, and in such cases I turn to my "Motivational" playlist which consists mainly of the audio from film clips / You Tube and the occasional upbeat tune

My playlist for a hard 5k is as follows;

*The Grind https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4b4DJFStVQ
then...
Lose Yourself - Eminem (cut to start at around 30s after the intro)
followed by...
A suitable length upbeat song - presently Hall of Fame - Script/Will.i.am (I know, I know)
and finally...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSM1mvMypWU (cut to start at just after 1')

The last one ensures that in the crucial final 1k, you have a coach screaming at you not to give up, and to "negotiate with your body to find more strength" etc... This works just great)

*The Grind is a personal favourite. Most of training is early morning, and on the days when I'm just not feeling it, this comes on for the warm up, or sometimes even before I even get out of the house

Housenation UK - Lee Harris podcast.

Modern chart music and classic anthems in the mix. Some episodes better than others but usually over an hour with plenty of drum and bass. Won't be everyones taste - but does it for me.

Here is the 2 volume ultimate erg playlist from row2k.com (a US based website).

http://www.row2k.com/features/700/Ultim ... q4zO_RDu8B

http://www.row2k.com/features/710/Ultim ... q4zcfRDu8B

The rules were that each artist could have only one song and they tried to represent lots of different genres.

A few of my favorites on the list. I kind of liked it because I wouldn't have put the list together this way myself, but I'm thinking of building it exactly as is to mix things up.

From volume 1
AC/DC - Thunderstruck
Eminem - Lose Yourself
Europe - The Final Countdown
Queen - Don't Stop Me Now
Rammstein - Du Hast

From volume 2
Bon Jovi - Livin' On A Prayer
Deadmau5 - There Might Be Coffee
Kanye West - Stronger
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - Thrift Shop
Rolling Stones - Start Me Up

I think I have found the ideal song for the last rep of a 8x500 workout.

Remember the Name by Fort Minor.

The reason is the lyrics for the chorus. I think they must be rowers.

This is ten percent luck, twenty percent skill
Fifteen percent concentrated power of will
Five percent pleasure, fifty percent pain
And a hundred percent reason to remember the name!

I don't know if any of you are into rap, or can even tolerate it.
But it has helped me finish strong in a bunch of workouts over the past week.

I have to add another song here: The blood, the sweat, the tears - Machine Head.
Both for music and words:

I built these walls around me
And i can break them all away
And I'll focus all the strength
I call unstoppable energy

So hold on to the end

[Chorus]
It's all about
The blood, the sweat, the tears
Attribute to the strength
Built through the years

Hold on
I'm falling
I'm falling down again too

[Chorus]
It's all about
The blood, the sweat, the tears
Attribute to the strength
Built through the years

I've been there
Cause I once hit a wall
Cause I once hit a wall
Cause I once hit a wall

Found music for cycling on a really funny blog " something about rowing" that is written by a mathematician who uses lots of expletives. Interesting mix I think!. The bicycling video line mentioned there is called Sufferfest, and they placed some of their music onto spotify. Spotify is my new go-to place for both erg and ski erg.
Like Chang-chi I also like slower pieces for long rows - like "carbon based life forms"; or both "the hearts of space" and "echoes" (latter two are internet radio feeds.)
Here the list made 10k at a leisurely 1:57.x or so fun; good music for all sorts of times (mid 50 minutes a couple of lame songs): http://open.spotify.com/user/thesufferf ... GvHZN7S4JK

I put on the Grateful Dead Channel on Sirius XM and link to the live archived recording of the day. It's usually 45 - 60 minutes, about the right amount of time for my workout and, as an unrepentant 40+ year Deadhead, the randomness and often inspired performances are just the thing to keep me motivated.
