Shrewsbury Mile - Sept 8th
Not sure it is worth a thread on its own as there appears to be only me (maybe Jason?) going to this - but I figured if a Free Spirit was donning his team vest and pulling his tripe out for the Team I may as well put it out there in the public domain...
On Sunday 8th Sept I'll give it all I have over 1609m at: The Shrewsbury Club, Sundorne Road, Shrewsbury, SY1 4RG. I'm hoping for about 5:45.00 but not sure about whether I'll manage that. I've no idea about the race schedule timings but I'll try and update sometime during the day via my phone.

I am about 60% sure I will be there but I may be late so Dougie said he would save me an erg in the last race.
Been doing plenty of HITT training but I have no target in mind.

Hopefully we are not still rowing when it gets dark.
Wife said that I can set off in the morning instead of waiting till after my daughters sleep over party. I should get to race in my own age group instead of at the end of the day. [-o<

Fastest rower of the day in the Sub7 Mile Competition was ME I won the 40+ Category. And had a nice day. Well organised event with a few new faces and old faces. Nice to meet Plummy again. Pity there were not more Freespirits able to attend.

Well done Jason. =D> =D>
My British Record has, after over three years been beaten by that whipper snapper Richard Steventon. He beat it by 4.5 seconds, a substantial margin I'm sure we'll all agree. Many congratulations to him. =D> =D>

Re: Shrewsbury Mile - Sept 8th
Had a good day out at this event. Having started with a mild sore throat yesterday I considered staying in bed rather than get up but a 1pm race start made it an easier decision to give it a go.
The Shrewsbury Club is about 1 hour 30 from me so relatively close. It's a nice enough venue and the ergs were set up at one end of a huge indoor tennis court hall. It was very echoey which made using a microphone difficult but we got by.
A crowd of many of the usual suspects and a few new faces made for some good races and having the races run by "anticipated finish time" made the races close (some very).
Only 5 ergs for the races and 3.75 (3 x model D's, 1 x model C and 1 x model B - eek!!) warm up ergs made you think you might not get a warm up at all but there was no problem there.
My race was the usual "feel your way into it" especially with the dodgy throat so I managed splits of 1:49.5, 1:48.8, 1:47.9 and 22s for the last 109. I chased down two guys who were 10 & 12 metres ahead of me but big Caleb Evans still has 2m on me in the last 100. Despite pulling 1:42's and 1:41's he pulled away a fraction and beat me by 0.9s (though is is younger and huger!).
Finished with 5:48.2
It's got potential as a diary date race but they need a projector screen (the club wall just didn't work and you couldn't read anything making it useless for spectators). More than anything, like other races, they need people to turn up and have a go.
Even in this small event , 2 British records were set!!

Re: Shrewsbury Mile - Sept 8th
As soon as he said he had broke the British record I thought of you Bill. I think it may have been partly my fault because I was keeping him within 9m from me and I may have inspired him with some pace making.billwright wrote:Well done Jason. =D> =D>

Great pace making there Jason. His performance has been on the cards for a while now, He holds nearly all the records for his age group now.

Well done Plummy and Jason, great results both and thanks for representing FreeSpirits
Sounds like a good day out, I was working just around the corner though I had forgotten all about this event I have been unwell so wouldn't have raced but would have liked to have dropped in at least to say hello. Next time perhaps (if there is one)
